Margaret H. Schmit
Margaret H. (Woodruff) Schmit was born in Rochester on September 15, 1927 and passed away on January 30, 2013 in Des Moines, Iowa, where she had been living with her son and his wife for the past year.
Margaret married Robert Way Schmit on Sept. 20, 1947, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rochester. Both Margaret and Bob worked at the Mayo Clinic, until they retired.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Linda Davidson (Dale), of Orlando, Florida, and her son, James “Jim” Robert Schmit (Cindy) of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lisa Hatch (Gary), Lori Cousinou (Jeff) and Jeff Davidson; and seven great grandchildren. Her husband Bob preceded her in death on April 30, 1999, as did her sister, Carma (Mason) Vinapol.
Margaret loved watching all sports, but her favorites were the Twins, Vikings, NASCAR and the Lakers. She was fun to be around, loved playing jokes and was a very generous person to everyone around her. She became a diligent correspondent after moving to Des Moines to keep in touch with her many friends in Minnesota and around the country.
A Funeral Mass will be held in Rochester at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013, with the Rev. Mark McNea officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass. A lunch and joyous celebration of Margaret’s life with her many friends and family will follow the Mass.

Margaret (Mema) Schmit was a kind and sweet person who deserves a special place in heaven. She was like the grandmother I never had, and I was so lucky that Lisa would share her with me! The needlepoint that Mena made of my wedding invitation will always hold a special place in my heart and home. I hope more than anything that Mema knew before she left this earth how important she was to so many people. My condolences to Mema's family, she will be greatly missed.
Margaret was a one of a kind lady. She was so full of fun and a joy to be around. I worked with her in General Service at Mayo for three years. We tour guides got our daily laughs just hanging around Margaret. She was loved by anyone who knew her and she will be missed by so many but never forgotten. She loved her family. Margaret, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Margaret you are missed so very much, but I know everytime I see a cardinal I will be reminded of you. I could always count on you, whether it was for a good story telling hour, or just a good cry, you were my rock when my mother and broher passed away, please tell them I think of them often. A couple of my favorite strories were the " carmel apple" incident, and the one about your appendextomy. But I would always lose track of time when I came to visit, I will always treasure those times and miss you forever.
Lisa

Jim and Linda,
I am so sorry for your loss. We all have such wonderful memories of your Mom and I know they will be comforting to all. Please know she will be missed. love, nancy
Margaret was my favorite aunt. She was loving and kind to everyone, especially me. She will always be remembered as the one who would play practical jokes on her friends and family. She loved her family and she loved life. Her memory of the early years of my childhood would always rekindle a loving conversation that would have us both laughing, crying and reliving some grand moments in our lives. Margaret will be missed, not only by her family, but by those who learned to know and love her throughout her glorious lifetime. Her sense of humor was amazing and her love of books and knick-knacks was incredible. She now joins her husband, mother, father and sister (among others) in watching over her family. May God rest her soul.
Lisa, just want to say so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Grandmothers are very special. I want you to know I will always be there for you to cry and talk about the good times you had with your grandmother. You are a great friend and co-worker at John Randolph Medical Center.
Love
Deborah

Ms. Margaret was SPECIAL in every sense of the word. Met her at the Mayo Medical Center (MMC) in 1987 and I stayed in contact with her until shortly before her death in 2013. Margaret was CLASS from A To Z. Always looking great and their was no one that cared for the MMC more than her. Not much that she did not know about the history of the MMC. Her greatest attribute was her concern for others and her sense of humor. As a former FBI Agent, not one too be fooled, she pulled one on me that was classic. Some know about it and most do not. She will be missed by many. I really do believe that those in Heaven need to be careful around Margaret because she will never loose her mischief. God Bless Her and all of the members of her family. Her and Jim Powers were (2) two of a kind. I am blessed that both were in my life.
My dearest Mema,
This is your Lisa Desa... I miss you so much already! My heart aches! But, I know you are truly my angel in heaven with grandpa Bob now! I am thankful you are happy and at peace now! I am proud that you are my grandma! I have learned so many things from you and hope to keep passing them on to future generations of our family! You were an amazing and precious human being (an angel on earth) and now a precious angel up above! You did and meant more to and for me than I could ever have expressed to you in words!
I will see you again someday when I am called home!
I love you forever and always with all of my heart!!
