Richard G. Hahn M.D.
Richard Gillis Hahn, aka “Gil”, “Archie”,” “E” passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 in Minneapolis, MN. Gil was born September 22, 1931 to Fred J. and Rebecca Hahn. He was raised in Idaho Falls, ID, and attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and Idaho Falls High School. Gil graduated in 1952 from Carroll College in Helena, MT. and went on to earn a medical degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO. Upon graduation from medical school in 1956, he interned for a year at St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He joined the Navy and served as a Lieutenant Physician from 1957 – 1959. In 1959 he began his residency at Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, MN, where he remained on staff as a clinical oncologist until he retired in 1993.
In 1954, Gil married Antoinette Marie Lupo, and together they raised eight children. Gil is survived by his wife, Tonie; his eight children, Rebecca (David) Sprenger of Byron, MN, Martin (Connie) Hahn of New York, NY, Lorraine (David) Rose of Minneapolis, MN, Barbara (Paul Neseth) Hahn of Minneapolis, MN, Carol (Kenneth) Iwinski of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Maureen (Michael) Grebin of Chanhassen, MN, Stephen (Steven Boettcher) Hahn of Los Angeles, CA and Matthew (Krista) Hahn of San Diego, CA; 23 grandchildren, Ryan, Karen (Joshua), Jillian, Camille (Benjamin), Andrew, Alexander, Madelaine, Cameron, Philip, Evelyn (Eric), Joanna, Naomi, Siri, Paavo, Nolan, Kira, Aubrey, Mia, Nicholas, Olivia, Samuel, Avery and Vivian; and 3 great-grandchildren, Gillie, Crosby and Vincent.
He is also survived by his brother, Ralph Holden and sisters, Dixie (Gaylord) Smith, Shirley (Stan) Bray, Pearl Hahn, Joan Hahn and Fern Holden.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Rebecca; stepfather, C.R. Holden; brothers Dr. Robert F. Hahn, Fred J. Hahn, C.R. Holden Jr., Robert Fisher; and sisters Mary Fisher and Lois Holden.
Gil was the gentlest of souls and a lover of people. He touched his family, friends, patients and countless strangers with love and kindness, and he loved his family more than anything.
Gil was always ready for a game of cards, a bet on a sports game, and a discussion or email about faith and the meaning of life. Upon retirement, Gil found a love of painting and shared his passion and prolific artwork with his grateful family members. He will be remembered as a fierce cribbage player, an enchanting storyteller, a lover of Frank Sinatra music, and a calming and peaceful spirit as the patriarch of his Hahn clan. A true poet until the end, he left us on the most poetic of days; 12/12/12.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Gil’s life will be held at 11:00am Monday, December 17, 2012 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 5:00pm Sunday, December 16, 2012 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home (1119 11 ½ Street SE Rochester, MN 55904) and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The family prefers memorials be written to Department of Oncology Fund/Research at Mayo Clinic or the American Cancer Society.

Tonie, I send my condolence to you and your family. Bob, Gil and Fred were all outstanding men and all died too soon.Cordially, Neil
I was blessed to be one of the patients touched by Dr. Hahn. He not only cared about me, but always showed an interest in our family of seven children. It was that care, I am sure that helped with my survival. He was my oncologist from 1976 until he retired, as I was in a 20 year study. Art work became my joy after my diagnoses. Self taught I have just completed 2 large commissions for Mayo Systems in Austin after corneal transplants. It would have been fun to see Dr. Hahn's artwork. Our sympathy. Gene and Sally Gerhart. Brownsdale, Mn.
Dear Tonie,
We were shocked and saddened by the loss of Gil. Your comment about "Gil going home" was very meaningful for us. You, Gil and the total Hahn family were fine neighbors during our two "hitches" on Wilshire Court. Lisa called us, and had heard from Nancy, so I guess the "ole Wilshire gang has continued to stay in touch. Thank you for sharing Gil with us.
Mary and Frank
I am so sorry for your loss. We were neighbors only a short time, but I know Gil was a great guy. Sincerely, Doris Martin
With all the love in my heart, I wish you all peace! Uncle Gil was one of a kind! He touched so many people who will count themselves fortunate to have known him even for a little while. He is in heaven with my dad and so many others! Are they playing cribbage or fishing maybe? My prayers are that you will soon be comforted by the awesome memories.
Toni.....Marcia and I were so shocked and saddened to hear of Gil's sudden death. He was such a wonderful fellow and will be missed by all those who had the previledge of knowing him. Fortunately he helped create an amazing family to help you through this difficult time. Allan
Dear Tonie: Our deepest sympathy to you and your entire family on the death of Gil. He was a lovely man and so well thought of by all who knew him. He leaves behind a wonderful family and we know that you will all hold each other close at this time of loss. You are in our thoughts.

Dr. Hahn and family -
How fortunate are we to have such a warm, loving, funloving guy in our lives! Always kind, welcoming, smiling. Oh tough when he had to be doing audits, etc., but he was approachable and sought you out to make sure you were doing ok. He was so loved by the staff. So loved. I transferred from E12 to Scottsdale, and was so homesick; he would run me down wherever i was to say hello and deliver a hug. I havent worked with mayo for almost 20 years and he still was kind enough to include me with emails to say hello how are YOU?
Thank you for sharing your husband and dad and grandpa and brother with us. We are all better ppl because of him!
Big hug to you all, Julie Kelly Dutton
Our hearts are melded with yours in Richards death. Although we never met your Dad, we are certain that we would have loved him as you do. I am confident though that he is now greatly enjoying the beginning of his real life with Jesus and that we WILL get to meet him one glorious day...

Dear Tonie and all of your family,
Our world is without another great man and dear soul. My heart breaks for you all. I am so grateful to have seen Gil in his element at Pearl's wedding. May God's Blessing be with you now and in the future.
Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Hahn and Hahn family ---
I trained as a medical oncologist under the supervision of Gil Hahn at Mayo Clinic, 1976-1978.
Subsequently, I had the pleasure of working with Gil via our NCCTG and ECOG study groups and as a study group auditor.
I also had the pleasure of having Gil audit my oncology research programs! He was tough but very fair as an auditor, and I always learned something from our audits together and his audits of my work.
Gil had a profound influence on my professional life as a medical oncology mentor and a warm professional friend. He was my role model for my relationships with patients, the families of patients, and colleagues.
My thoughts and prayers are with Gil and with you.
May you find peace, and God bless you all.
Best and warmest regards,
Rob Marschke

An Angel whispered
take my hand and
come with me
you're work here is done.
I went away to a place
where there's no tears, nor sorrow
only laughter and smiles,
there will always be a Tomorrow.
As I move amongst the clouds.
I'll look down and smile upon you,
while the angels
sing a heavenly song.
I am not alone
all who went before
are here
they awaited my return.
I know you'll grieve
and wish I was still here
I am here in the memories
you hold dear.
Remember how much I
love you
and know I took your
love with me.
I did not wish for
you to cry, nor feel sad.
My pain is gone and
I am Free!
Soon you'll come to me
until then
God will be with you
Just as He's with me.
I worked with Dr. Hahn in Medical Oncology at Mayo and was the desk supervisor during that time. I remember him so fondly as a kind, gentle, caring friend to all with whom he worked and as an exemplary physician for his patients. He made a difference in this life and I feel fortunate to have shared in the time he had on this earth.
My condolences to the family.
I was born two days after Gillis in Idaho Falls and attended grade school at Holy Rosary remembering Gil as my best friend. I moved to Twin Falls in the 8th grade and we only saw each other when IF played Twin in football in high school. I also became a physician, Univ. of Oregon for med school and residency and Philadelphia for internship. For some strange reason I thought about Gil on Wednesday December 12 and decided to Google him. Too late, sorry my friend. roy
Growing up three doors away, he was like a second Dad...never short on advise! He will be missed by all the Sedlacks.
I am so sorry to hear about Gil. I will be in touch.
Norma
I am sorry to hear a great person has left our world but indeed is continuing his work in heaven.
I remember Dr. Hahn always being just as you have said. His patients he cared for, loved him. He was respectful to the desk staff as we worked close daily. I had the opportunity to work with him and am grateful for those years.
