Daniel G. Pesch, M.D.

On September 10, 2012, Daniel “Dan” Gerard Pesch, M.D., age 55, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN surrounded by his loving family.

Dan was born on September 26, 1956, in Iowa City, Iowa to Joseph and Mary (Moquin) Pesch.  He grew up in Rochester, MN and graduated from Lourdes High School, class of 1974.  He served in the U.S. Army as an Army bandsman playing trumpet, from 1974 to 1977. He was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia and Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dan attended Rochester Community College, where he met the love of his life, Kristi. They were married four years later on June 5, 1982 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Potsdam, MN and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year.

Dan graduated from Hamline University with a degree in chemistry.  He went on to attend medical school at the Mayo School of Medicine, later completing his residency in Family Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He practiced Family Medicine with the Olmsted Medical Center at their former Elgin and current Plainview clinic for 24 years. He believed strongly in physician leadership and obtained his Masters of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. Throughout his entire practice, he was a dedicated physician and was held in the highest regards by his patients. He took pride in his clinic and in the excellence of his co-workers.

Dr. Pesch has been an active part of the community. He served as the Wabasha County Medical Examiner, Medical Director of Plainview and Elgin Ambulance Services, and Medical Director at St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview, MN. He also served as the Medical Director at Heartland Hospice of Rochester, MN. Dr. Pesch starred in community and church theater productions, enjoyed raising racing homing pigeons, and managed a vineyard at his home. Additionally he was a maple syrup producer, a prominent shepherd and a talented trumpet player.

Above all, Dan loved being with family and friends.  He was devoted to his family and cherished his children and their accomplishments.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son.

Dan is survived by his wife, Kristi; his son, Joseph (Lauren) Pesch and their son Thomas Frank of St. Helena, CA; his daughter, Kathryn (Kyle) McKenzie of Rochester, MN; his son Thomas Pesch of South Bend IN; parents Joseph and Mary Pesch of Rochester, MN; brother Michael (Connie) Pesch of St. Cloud, MN; brother David (Valli) Pesch of Cerritos, CA; sister Elizabeth (Tim) Mackey of St. Cloud, MN; sister Therese (Mark) Smith of Cedar Rapids, IA; brother Thomas (Mary) Pesch of Allen, TX; brother Andrew (Beth) Pesch of St. Francis, WI; sister Maria Pesch of Atlanta, GA; sister Amy (Bob) LaHait of Sudbery, MA; mother-in-law Kathleen McFarland of Elgin, MN; sister-in-law Patti (Paul) Tackmann of Lake City, MN; sister-in-law Darci (Scott) Fenske of Elgin, MN; brother-in-law Scott (Tina) Culbertson of Pine Island, MN; brother-in-law James McFarland of Elgin, MN. Dan is also survived by 27 loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William McFarland.

Funeral: Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 15, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview, MN with Rev. William Meiers of Hosanna Lutheran Church, Rochester officiating. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Plainview and Elgin American Legions.

Visitation: Will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 14, at the Christian Life Center of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview, MN and an hour prior to the funeral service at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

The family prefers memorials to Hosanna Lutheran Church, Plainview Community Theater and OMC Regional Foundation.

Kristi and family, I am so sorry to learn of Dan's death.  Dan's brother Dave and I were classmates at Lourdes, and Dan played trumpet in our wedding 29+ years ago.  I always admired and respected Dan's gentle spirit and soft-spoken style, particularly given his many accomplishments.  I am sure you have countless good memories of this special man, and please know he was deeply admired by many who experienced the gift of his presence--even in small ways--during his rich, full life.

Dear Kristi, Joe, Katie, Tom, Uncle Joe, Aunt Mary, Mike, Dave, Liz, Therese, Tom, Andrew, Maria and Amy,

My thoughts and prayers are with you this day. Dan touched the lives of so many with his generosity of spirit. May you find comfort in the love of those who remember him with you.

Peace be with you,

Kate Braun

Kristi and family,

We are so sorry for your loss!  You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.  May God give you the strength to grieve and to celebrate the blessing that Dan was in your life.  Our sympathies!

Kristi and Randy Quitney

Many years ago I fell in front of Elgin clinic carrying my twin daughters and several months pregnant with my son.  I drove back to Planview where I was living at the time and tried to get out of my car, but could not walk.  I was rushed back to Elgin Clinic by ambulance, where I met this wonderful doctor. There is more to my story, but i will keep it short.  Heaven has just received another Angel. My sincere sympathy to the Pesch family. God Bless...

Dear Pesch family,

Seeing Dan 2 years ago at one of Liz's Veteran shows, immediately I was reminded of his general peaceful nature, humor and kind presence. He hardly changed at all (from growing up years), and clearly lived a fulfilled and  purposeful life. Such a blessing to many, and a tragic loss. You are all in my prayers. K (Lamb) Novotny

Dear Kristi and Family,

Was so sorry to hear of your loss.  Dr. Pesch was my mothers doctor and she thought the world of him and was proud to have him as a doctor at St. Isadores.  I was back to Elgin this summer and each time we would drive past your farm as we were taking her on an outing she would always proudly announce "that is where my doctor lives and he is a wonderful husband and father"!!

When my daughter called her grandma on Monday, she said that grandma was so sad she didnt want to talk because something had happened to her doctor.

May the memories of the times shared help you thru this difficult time.

LaDonna (Madeline Harts Daughter)

To the Pesch Family,

I was a Lourdes High School classmate of Dan's.  I am so sorry about your loss of Dan.  To lose him when he was so young and contributing so much to others makes it such a tradgedy.  Words cannot express adequately my sympathy to all of you.  I will always remember Dan in his Lourdes band uniform with his trumpet. And always with a big smile on his face. My prayers are with all of you.

Monica Overkamp

Kristi, Mary,  Joe and family: We just heard the news (11PM on Friday night). we are in the UP of Michigan and are so sorry we cannot be with  you tomorrow or these last two days. We were shocked to hear the news and are grieving with you. You all are in our prayers.

Rich and Marian

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Pesch family. I am the janitor for the OMC Clinic in Plainview and many many times over the last 12 years I would run into Dan still working late when I came in to clean the building. Though we never had long conversations, he was always kind and friendly with me. He was also my person doctor at the clinic and brought me back to good health from a neck injury I had a few years ago. We will all miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Sincerely,

John Ohm

Kristi and Family,

I am so very sorry for your losses.  To lose your dad recently, and now your husband, is heart breaking.  As time passes may you find strength in your family and your beloved memories.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was deeply saddened to hear this news, my sympathies to all of you.  I was in Band at RCC and Dan was the "handsome" guy who played trumpet so well.  In the past I have worked at OMC and was pleased to see that he was a physician with Olmsted,  I believe a tremendous asset to the group.  We pray for God to sustain you and give you strength during this time.

Gloria Gaither writes:  God walks with us. He scoops us up in His arms or simply sits with us in silent strength until we cannot avoid the awesome recognition that yes, even now, He is there.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Kristi!  You and your family are in my heart and in my prayers.

Carolyn McDonald

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Dr Pesch was my Dr and my children's Dr the whole while we lived in Plainview. He was great and helped me through a couple of very difficult health challenges. I was shocked and very sad to hear of his accident and death. I know he will be sorely missed.

Truly terrible news, a huge loss for the family and all who knew him. I knew Dan mainly in high school, but I talked to him and heard of him a few times since.  He was good man, husband, father, doctor, farmer, veteran and trumpeter. Though his life was far too short, it is hard to imagine a fuller life, and almost impossible to imagine one better lived.  Dan can truly rest in peace.

Kristi and Family,

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Julie Hobbs

We were so shocked to learn of Dan's death. Please accept our prayers and sympathy for all the family.

I've known Dan since grade school, very smart and funny guy. My sincere condolences to the entire Pesch family at this very difficult time.  Respectfully, Don Helgerson

Tom

We are so sorry on the loss of your father. Keep his memories alive in your heart. We are keeping your Mom and the rest of your family in our prayers. Let us know if there is anything you need.

May God Bless all of you. God will carry you through this difficult time.

Love, Dr. and Mrs. Kunst

We are heartbroken at this great loss in your beautiful family. May the great empty space Dan left slowly fill with sweet memories and the presence of God.

Peace,

Karen, Jim, Gina, Joy

I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the Dan Pesch family.  I knew Dan through both grade and high school. He, as you already know, was one of the finest people, a great friend always sporting a smile and as I recall, a warm sense of humor.  He was a true hero to family, friends, patients and community, he will be missed by so many.  Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

With fond remembrances of a great man, Becky (Hahn) Sprenger

Kristi and family,

So saddened, and shocked, to hear the news about Dan's death. Know that all of you are in my prayers for that "peace that passes all understanding" during this very difficult time. Celebrate his life - sounds like it was one that served and helped so many!

Sue

I would like to offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Pesch family.  I worked with Dr. Pesch when he was our Medical Director at Heartland Hospice.  I have such fond memories of him...his passion for so many things...sheep, wine, theater!  He was a beautiful, intelligent and kind man.  His warm and infectious spirit will always be with those of us who had the benefit of knowing him.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Sincerely,

Colleen McGreevy

As a patient with OMC, I only saw Dr. Pesch a handful of times.  His compassion and kindness really showed through.  He was a great doctor and a good man.  Many prayers and condolences to Dr. Pesch's family, friends and co-workers.

Kristy, Joe, Katie, and Tom,

My heart aches at the loss you are experiencing.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.  May God comfort and guide you through these difficult times.

Dear Kristi and children (Joe, Tom & Kathryn), Joe, Mary, Mike, Dave, Liz, Tom Therese, Andrew, Maria and Amy,

Dan was probably one of the most outstanding human beings I have had the honor of knowing. He had a way of about him that made you feel good. I have so many fond memories of when Dan and I were growing up together. Please be assured of my prayers for you all at this time. I will never forget Dan or you all.

Terry Riley

May he rest in peace.  Prayers for all the family.

Kristi & Family

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I haven't seen you in a while,  but always enjoyed travelling with you to soccer games. You are in our prayers.

Cheryl & Ryan Kelly & Family

Kristi and Family,

The Heartland Hospice team will never be the same.  We have lost a great physician, leader and friend. His love and compassion for our hospice patients set an example for us all.  He made himself available to us any time of the day or night.  I thank God for having blessed me with the opportunity to have known Dr. Pesch and to have been a part of his life for the past year.  Please accept my deepest and most heartfelt condolences.

Dear Mrs. Pesch and family,

I am very sorry for your loss he was a great man. He was my reason and biggest inspiration for wanting to become a nurse. When i was in the play with him he was sort of my mentor. He was my hero because seeing that he could help so many people and make such an impact on peoples lives made me think i wanted to be just like him and help as many people as i could when i was older. He may have passed but the memories will stay forever and the impact he made on so many peoples lives will keep his spirit alive in our hearts. He will never be forgotten. God just decided he needed his medical angel back too soon for all of us. love, a girl truly inspired by him Amalia Zabel.

Our hearts are heavy with saddness in the passing of our dear friend Dan, a member of our Hosanna family, who will truly be missed. Our prayers are with you Kristi, Joe, Katie, & Tom and the entire Pesch and Fenske families. I will always remember our annual church musicals.  The best was when Dan and I sang a rap, with the moves and all, and thought we were pretty darn cool! Remember that God has blessed all of us with thoughts, memories, and a love more powerful than death, and it is through these gifts that Dan will forever remain a cherished part of your lives and all of ours.

My heart is broken to hear I've lost a wonderful friend (Dr.Daniel G. Pesch),I'll always remember you Dan and the fun we always had when you and Tim came to visit us here in Florida during the classic. One thing ,I am very bless that the lord gave us a chance to meet each other.Mrs Pesch,I can understand your pain( cause I too lost my wife). We must move on and live life as though they never left, peace be with you always and God bless you forever. Dan, peace be with you till we meet again,Da Hawaiian, John Abraham

Kristi and kids (I know you are no longer "kids"):

I am so sorry to hear of Dan's tragic passing. I remember him as a happy man who was willing to help others. Remember the precious time you had together.

Kristi, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband.  You are one of the most likeable people I've known – positive, caring, energetic, loving.  I can just feel your enthusiasm for your family.  It seems that Dan was the same, and a profound loss is felt by the community.  Of course it is felt most by those who loved him best, and I pray that you will be lifted up by kind words, thoughts, and deeds to help you as you are missing your husband.

I am saddened by passing of Daniel Pesch. I had been his patient since the early days of the Elgin Clinic. He was always kind and caring. I loved his peculiar sense of humor. I shall truly miss him. Even though I moved into Rochester nearly a dozen years ago, I still made the trek over to Plainview to have Dr. Pesch see to my annual check ups and meet most of my medical needs. My heart goes out to his family. May God Bless you all. He was truly a great man. Not many would be able to accomplish all he did in the time he was with us.

Kristi, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Sorry for your loss.

Roger and Renee Gusa

Our deepest sympathy goes to your and your family.  So sorry for your loss.  May memories bring you peace.

Lynn Steinbirnk and Mychelle Henderson

I am saddened and shocked for your loss and the communities

I work at a funeral home and i would have to fax paperwork for him to sign as coroner and he was always prompt and professional. I may have talked to him once or twice and he was very friendly and kind.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry

Kristi and family,  I am so sorry to hear about the death of Dan.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during your time of grief.

Wow. There are no words adequate at this time. Please know that the Pesch family is in my heart and thoughts. I always thought the Pesch family was stellar. Such great kids and so many good memories from soccer and school through our kids. That's something that the community and everyone Dan touched only have wonderful things to write and say about him. Pretty special. Take care.

Kristi, Joe, Katie, Tom and family,

May his footprints that were  made in your live's sustain you, give you strength, remind you of the best of times and provide the love and comfort that he contines to provide to you.

Dan was a classmate of mine at Lourdes and I have fond memories of his kindness and humor.  I had seen him over the years while we planned and enjoyed class reunions.  He is gone too soon.  My sympathies to the Pesch family.

Kristi and Family,  I pray that the comfort of family, friends, and faith get you through this most difficult time. I'm so very sorry for your loss and pray for your strength.

Kristi and Family,

My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time

You are all in my thoughts and heart.

Dear family,

I remember Dr. Pesch from his resident days at the Kasson-Mayo Family Practice Clinic.  That was many, many years ago.  I don't remember all the residents but I certainly never forgot Dr. Pesch.  He was a favorite among the nurses because he was kind, compassionate and always helpful.  I always thought Mayo Clinic made a mistake when they let him get away rather than putting him on as a staff physician.  I guess Mayo's loss was OMG's gain.  The last time I saw him was at a fundraiser for BAJA trip at the Pine Island Legion Club.  I didn't know the connection to the Culbertson's at that time.  You have my sympathy at the loss of this wonderful physician and human being.

I was very shock to hear that Dr. Pesch had gone to  Heaven. He took great care of my Dad (Scott Zimmerman) when he got sick & Dad thought he was the world's greatest Doctor because he would take the time with his patients & use words Dad could understand.

My condolences go out to all of his family and his former patients. God Bless all of you.

Travis Himlie

Liz, Dave, Mr and Mrs Pesch, Kristi and family,

I am so sorry to hear this tragic news.

My heart breaks for you and anyone who has ever known Dan.

All my prayers and thoughts are with you.

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18

I had the fortune of calling Dr. Pesch my doctor when I grew up in the Plainview area.  He was a very kind and passionate man who was proud of his job.  I moved away 11 years ago and can say I will never meet another doctor that was as caring and professional as Dr. Pesch.  I carry a heavy heart as I pray for the family of Dr. Pesch.  My deepest sympathy goes out to the family.  I am so sorry for your loss.

My condolences to Dr. pesch's family. I wish you all peace during this time.

Mary, Joe, and family

You and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers since hearing the news about Daniel.  Knowing you and Joe, I know he had to be a wonderful man, doctor, dad, and son.  Take care of yourselves through this time of sorrow.  Your friend, Wanda

Dr. Pesch has seen our family on numerous occasions.  He was there and assisted with the birth of Carl as well as helped care for Troy's father after he had been hospitalized.  He was a kind man who will be missed by many in the community.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew Dr. Pesch.

My deepest sympathies to the family. When I lived in Plainview Dr. Pesch was my Dr for years, delivered my last two children and saved my life when I had a blood clot in my lung and no one else could figure out what was wrong. He was always a caring and pleasant person. I was very saddened to hear the news of this tradgedy. Prayers for you during this time and for always. Losing a loved one is so hard, especially when they have been and made a difference in so many peoples lives.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  Dr Pesch was my doctor until I moved to Brainerd, MN where my daughter lives one year ago.  I missed Dr Pesch when I moved away.  It is so difficult to lose someone you love so deeply.  May God give you strength.

Kristii, Joe, Katie, & Tom,

I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful husband and father.  Please know my thoughts and the thoughts of my family are with you and we are sending as much healing energy as possible your way.  Blessed be...

With deepest sympathy so sorry for your loss

Kristi and family,

My name is Katie Tlougan and I wanted you to know how Dr. Pesch played one of the most important roles in my life. He was my family doctor and even more than that... a God-send. I was pregnant with my second child and he was there for the delivery of my son Antone. It was a great pregnacy had him in 42 minutes and was on top of the world. For the 1st couple hours...all of a sudden I went from the top of the world to the lowest as another Doctor came in and said Kate there's been complications do you want to have your baby be given his last rights and be baptised? Dr. Dans diagnosis of a rare strep called beta strep and fast actions saved my sons life. I"ll be forever grateful and am so very saddened by the loss of such a dear dear man. My family and I express our most sincere sympathy to you and your family at this difficult time. Your in our thoughts hearts and prayers.

My heart feels your pain. Life can change in just an instant. Let God hold you in his palms and depend on him for strength. You are not alone - rely on friends and family to comfort and to do things for you. Kris - you are strong but you don't have to be strong all by your self  - let others be strong for you.  If you or your family need any thing - don't hesitate to ask. Class mate and gopher pal - Brenda

Dear Liz and Pesch family,

we are old family friends of the Pesch's, I was a high school and med school classmate of Dan, fellow actor in the Lourdes Musical "of thee I sing", fellow LHS bandmate and teammate on the LHS football team (and I think my sister Martha went to PT school with Liz). I wanted to send my deepest condolences to you and your family. Dan was someone whom I always admired and respected; for his hard work, excellence in everything he did and compassion for others. I had a chance to see the news report about the care and kindness he gave to his patients in the Plainview community. I have a soft spot in my heart for rural physicians and I can tell Dan was close to the hearts of the Plainview community. He will be missed by us all. you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Kristi and family,

I can't tell you how sorry I am for your loss.  I have so many great memories of Dan from being my doctor, to a family friend, to the doctor of my kids.  He was a truly amazing man that I will never forget.  He could always make me laugh and my kids loved him!  He was so great to me and my entire family.  One of the many times he helped me was when he stayed late on a Friday night to help me when Marshall cut his head open, saving me a long night in the ER.  He was so generous to so many.

He will be missed greatly!

I have worked with Liz related to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival and actually knew Liz in college.  I have also had the priviledge to meet her parents at several of the festivals and always enjoy our warm conversations.  I very much enjoyed attending Joe's presentation a few years ago when he shared about his book (family memories) and have enjoyed conversations about the family.     Please accept my condolences.  I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.  Rachelle

Kristi and family,

We were so shocked and sad when watching KTTC last night and learning about Dan's passing!

We are so sorry to hear this and extend our sincere sympathy to you all! The testimonies on

KTTC last night highlighted Dan's caring, compassionate and extremely thorough  practice as a Dr. in Plainview!

Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers!

My deepest sympathy to all of Dan's family.  You are all in my thoughts and in my prayers.  May you draw strength from each other as you face the days ahead.  May Dan rest in peace.

Dr. Dan Pesch was a wonderful and generous man.  I came to know him through Paul and Miri Mattson as we picked his first crop of MN LaCrescent grapes from his vineyard.   We shared bottles of wine back and forth and he taught me how to prune grape vines so that I could get hands on experience instead of reading in a book.  2 feet of snow would not stop him from the pruning process, but a warm cup of hot chocolate always would.

That's how I'll remember him - as a generous and caring person.  When I open the bottle of Charbono wine that he gave me (It was his Favorite from California) I will think of Dan and the wonderful memories that he allowed me retain.

Always
