Charles “Charlie” Butruff Jr.

Charles David “Charlie” “Pops” Butruff Junior, 70, of Rochester passed away Wednesday evening, July 25, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Charlie was born November 3, 1941 in Rochester to Charles Sr. and Pearl Butruff. He married Sandra Bickford on November 30, 1963. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959 and he proudly served his country aboard the USS Lexington on an East Asia tour from 1959-1963. He returned from his time in the service and fell in love with his sweetheart of almost 49 years, Sandra. He went to work for IBM shortly after returning from his Naval tour. He retired from IBM in January of 1994 after 30 years of employment.

Charlie loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, buck skinning and camping. He loved afternoon adventures at Treasure Island Casino, where he could be found playing his favorite penny slot machines, quality time with his dear friends and spending weekends and summers with his precious granddaughters.

In 2003, Charlie survived a cardiac arrest due to the rapid response help from an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and he spent many years afterwards committed to educating others about the importance of providing AED equipment in public spaces.

He is survived by his wife Sandra of Rochester; three sons, Christopher (Glynis) Butruff of Austin, Tx.; Eric (Susie Timm) Butruff of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Chad (Sara) Butruff of Farmington; four granddaughters, Heather Mickelson, Bree Vipond, Trinity and Alexa Butruff; sisters Jo Ann Anderson and Deborah Butruff of Rochester; brother Craig “Skip” Butruff of Austin, Tx.; Aunts Jane Smith, Pat Taylor and Elaine Morse of Rochester, Lucille Healey of Victor, Iowa; Many nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers & sisters-in-law and numerous loving friends and camping buddies.

His parents; sister Gail Reberg; several in-laws and his beloved dog Goober preceded him in death.

A Memorial service for Charlie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday July 28, 2012 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on July 28, 2012 (two hours prior to services) Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Charlie requested donations be made to a cause he passionately volunteered for, the Minnesota SCA Survivor Network. Donation information is available online at www.mnscasurvivor.org or by phone: (763) 370-5750

Dear Sandy and Family,

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.  Charlie was always so willing to serve the cause of saving more lives from SCA, and educating the public.  His leadership, presence, sense of humor, and warm welcome to everyone he encountered are just a few of the qualities that comes to mind when I think of Charlie.  He did so much to help us with raising awareness about SCA over the last 8 years through his dedicated service to the MN SCA Survivor Network.  He paid it forward in so many ways.  His service to this cause has most certainly saved more lives.

Sincerely,

Dear Sandy and family,

I want to express my heartfelt condolences for the loss of Charlie. I first met him in Washington DC in 2004 at the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association meeting. He played an important role in the Minnesota Survivor group, but it was also such a joy to be around him. I will miss him.

I hope that your memories of him will bring you comfort.

I am very saddened to hear of the loss of this wonderful man. My heart goes out to the Butruff family.

Dear Sandy and Family,

You have our deepest sympathy in the passing of Charlie. We both have enjoyed getting to know Charlie all of these years in the MN SCA Survivors group. He always had a big smile and a good joke to tell us at the meetings. We also enjoyed our many emails that we sent to each other. We will miss him greatly.

Sincerely, Carol and Skip Mogren

Sandy and family,

It is with deep sympathy that I type these words!

Charlie was a good SCA survivor friend of mine as we journeyed thru life after our SCA arrests! We always hugged and greeted one another with deep feelings of understanding what each of us went through. He will be missed greatly!

Charlie was a founder of the MNSCASN as our First Treasurer (setting down the procedures that our new Non-Profit organization should follow). His model is used by Ron Scheid and for many years to come. He also was a influential member of the MNSCASN Board of Diretcors giving sage advice on many occasions to keep us on our mission and goals.

I wish I could be at the funeral on Saturday but Medtroinic Heart Rescue has me booked to work the booth. Charlie will understand that the work must go on.

Gene Johnson-Chariman MNSCASN

I am so sorry for your loss, Charlie was a great man, as I knew him from the Moose Lodge days.. The guy made some mean french toast!! Also he was a very good pool shooter, in the 30 plus years of knowing him I think I only beat him once or twice!!  Again You have my condolences, Randy Donahue

Charlie was a great friend.  We became friends shortly after his first cardiac arrest.  We were involved in many of the MN SCA Survivor and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association activities.  My daughter Jenna also met Charlie through these activities. She came to consider Charlie her adoptive Grandpa and loved him dearly.  Our whole family will miss Charlie deeply.

Charlie will be greatly missed. He was key to inspiring me to get on with life after my SCA and to enjoy myself and laugh. He put things in perspective for me. He supported me in starting a chapter in Iowa and again in Colorado. I will miss his laugh, love and jokes!
