Betty (Schartau) Calkins was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN on Oct. 2, 1925 to Edward and Mable Schartau and was the youngest of four.  Betty grew up in Rochester, MN with her older brother and two older sisters. She attended Rochester High School where she graduated in 1943. Betty met her husband, Robert Calkins in high school and they married on November 13, 1944. Shortly after that Robert was off to the Navy where he served during WWII. Betty and Robert had two children, Teresa (Richard) Ward and Vicky Calkins.

Betty also enjoyed making homemade beer and wine after the girls were born. She enjoyed knitting, watching the Twins and Vikings, and was an avid bowler and loved to get up early every morning and head to Apache Mall for her daily walk.

Betty worked numerous jobs at Mayo Clinic from inquiry and correspondents to billing and collections and finally in publications where she would type up books for publication for the Department of Urology. She retired in 1987.
