Anthony “Tony” Joseph Bugni

The Memorial Mass for Anthony “Tony” J. Bugni will be held at 10:30AM on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Resurrection Catholic Church of Rochester. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at church.   Interment will be in the spring of 2012 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hurley, Wisconsin.

Tony Bugni, age 91, of Rochester (formerly of Hurley, WI.) died Friday, November 25, 2011 peacefully at his home. Anthony J. Bugni was born on January 5, 1920 in Montreal, Wisconsin. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in 1938. On July 18, 1942 he married Mary “Betty” Reader at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley, WI. In 1946, the couple moved from Hurley to Milwaukee, and in 1950, they moved back to Hurley.  In 1997, they moved to Rochester to live with their daughter and son-in-law.

In July of 1942, Tony was called to service in the US Army, where he was a member of the 789th AA Battalion. He served his country in the Atlantic, France, and Central Europe. Tony was ultimately decorated with a variety of service medals and a recognition from the French government for taking part in the Normandy  invasion.   Recently, he was able to attend the Honor Flight from Rochester to Washington D.C. with fellow WWII veterans. This trip was truly a highlight in his life.

Following his military duty, Tony returned home to Hurley, WI where he worked for the Cary Iron Ore Mining Company. He later moved to Superior, WI to finish his college education, ultimately obtaining a teaching degree in Social Studies. Tony taught for a time, and then went to work as a Mining Inspector for MSHA until his retirement.

Tony loved doing crossword puzzles, listening to John Duremis, watching Jeopardy, and playing with our families three dogs, Brady, Casey, and Coco. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and was known for his stories and ability to make people laugh.

Survivors include a son, Gregory (Barb) of Hurley, WI, a daughter Patricia (Jerry) Rossman of Rochester, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters, Rosemary of Palos Verdes Estate, CA and Gloria of Sarasota, FL and a brother Richard of Mercer, WI.

He was preceded in death by, a son, Dennis, a daughter, Mary Patricia, his parents Rose and Anton and a sister, Margaret, three brothers Ronald, Florian and Lawrence, and his loving wife of 62 years, Mary “Betty” Bugni.

Memorial are suggested to the Bugni family.

much love from Northern WI

Mary

Just wanted to send my condolences. Anthony will be missed. He was one of the funniest peope ever. It is hard to find one photograph where he wasnt giving someone the "rabbit ears" behind their head. I will always remember him in a joyful way.  Jeff

When I saw that  picture in the Iron County Miner, I could not help but think of Tony, the father, because of the physical similarity.   But Anthony had an entirely different personality.  Anthony!  Always that beautiful smile!  The Bugni family was my family away from home, only half a block away.  Gloria was my dear friend but I knew the entire family and was so grateful for that connection.  The Bugni family was an outstanding musical family and Anthony was a proud member, always with a little joke on the side.  He had a full life and I am sorry I did not get to see him later in his life but my memory of his personality is still very vivid.  My sincere sympathy to Gloria and Dick, my latest connections to the family, as well as to his children and their children who were fortunate to have him for all those years.

Dear Bugs,

So very sorry to hear of your father's passing. Now he can spend Christmas with your mom. They could never find a better daughter than you. You have taken such good care of both your mom and dad--you will definitely have a special place in Heaven with them. It is not fun being without your parents, but unfortunately it is such a natural passing. I'm so happy that you had many good years with your parents and they will always be with you in your heart. Please send me your mailing address because I would like to contribute to a memorial for your dad. My deepest sympathy Bugs. I know how hard this is. Love, Lynn

We had planned on being at the funeral tomorrow but Dick is unable to.  He was at urgent care yesterday and he has a viral infection and bronchitis.  Coughing a lot.

We will have a mass said for Anthony in January and one in February at our Church in Mercer.

May your memories of all the wonderful times and stories you shared with Anthony comfort all of you.

I was sad to hear that my Uncle Anthony passed away.  He was always such a joy to be around because of his good humor and wit.  I remember several examples.  When I was young, he would generate sounds with his pipe and indicate they were coming from a mouse inside the pipe.  A few years ago he was acting like he was hitting on a young lady, as he was inclined to do from time to time, and in a matter of fact way told her that he'd just been released from prison.  He could keep a straight face in the middle of a gag better than anyone.  I also remember what he told us he would like to have on his tombstone: "I told you I was sick."  Vintage Anthony!  So I have some great memories of him and want to pass on my condolences to his family.  He will be missed but his legacy will live on in those who knew him.

Bugs, I've been thinking so much about how much you must be missing your Dad and how unreal it must feel to not have him there to care for.

I remember the first time I met your Dad and Mom. I went home with you (to Mankato?) for a visit. I was blown away by the fact that your Dad loved opera!

You and Jerry have been in my prayers and I will surely be thinking of you during the funeral.

Bugs, I may not be able to make it. Theresa and Carl had both of their vehicles bite the dust and Carl needs a ride to Buffalo, MN (where Mike lives) to pick up a truck. We have to be there very early Saturday. Things could change but the guy who would have normaly driven him is having his wisdom teath pulled.

You are in my prayers,

Nancy

Tony was such a joy to have when around at Madonna Towers last year. I will never forget his kind soul and quit wit. I am so sorry for your loss Patricia. I know how special your father was to you.
