Evelyn L. Smith
Evelyn Laraine Smith, 86, of Rochester, MN passed away Saturday March 12, 2011 at Golden Living Center Rochester East with her family by her side.
She was born Evelyn Laraine Glackin in Jackson, MN on May 12, 1924 to James & Phebie (Pew) Glackin. On June 10, 1942 she married Willard W. Smith. The couple farmed in Jackson, later moving to Alpha, MN and then Wanamingo, MN before settling in Rochester. Evelyn was employed at Rochester Methodist Hospital until retirement. Later, she also worked at the Gables Recovery Home as a housekeeper.
Evelyn loved home decorating, gardening, bird-watching, playing cards, and going to the casino to challenge the one-armed bandits. She could also be seen at her favorite Bingo parlors in town which gave her much enjoyment. She was a fan of Old-Time Polka and Country & Western music and loved to dance. A devout animal lover, she enjoyed caring for all her pets, most recently her feline companions Sophie & Patches. She maintained her strong Catholic faith throughout her life.
Her husband Willard preceded her in death on April 12, 1984. Also preceding her in death are her parents, her son, Garry W. Smith, and brothers Robert & Lawrence Glackin as well as an infant sister, Agnes.
Evelyn is survived by her children, James W. Smith of Reno, NV, Janet L. McCarthy of Minneapolis, MN and Jeffrey L. Smith, of Rochester, MN; sisters, Florence Quinn of Rochester, Hazel Maxon of Phoenix, AZ, Mary Grime of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren Kara McCarthy of St. Paul, MN, Shawn Smith of Auburn, CA and Patrick Smith of Reno, NV; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30a.m. Wednesday March 16, 2011 at Church of the Resurrection, with the Rev. Kevin Connolly officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 6:00pm – 8:00pm Tuesday evening at the new River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
