Bernard L. “Bernie” Drier

Bernard L. “Bernie” Drier, 94, of Rochester, died on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Madonna Towers surrounded by his loving wife.

Bernard was born May 5, 1929, in Durand, WI to Lambert and Margaret (Bundy) Drier. He attended and graduated from Winona Senior High School and then faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 – 1951. After the service, he married Betty Drier in 1953.  Bernie worked as a driver/operator/fireman for the Rochester Fire Department from July 1956 until his retirement in March 1984.

Bernie enjoyed many activities over the years including water and downhill skiing, going to his cabin, and traveling with Betty. He was an Eagle Scout, very active in the Marion RC Flyers Model Airplane Club, and built many model airplanes for himself and other friends. Bernie was a wonderful man who was loved by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Drier of Rochester; brother, James Drier; sister, Barbara Clark, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester, MN with Fr. John Sauer officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Madonna Towers Skilled Nursing Care for the exceptional care they provided Bernie. Special thanks to Mayo Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers please give to a charity of donor’s choice.

Condolences

The family of Bernard L. “Bernie” Drier has received the following condolences.

Our condolences. I was the youngest in our family. But Bernard was always nice and kind to me. I remember that he helped me to learn how to build model cars, and planes correctly. He will be missed.

Gone but never to be forgotten, Thank you Bernie for the many wonderful memories. Thinking of you Betty.

Gone but never to be forgotten, Thank you Bernie for the many wonderful memories. Thinking of you Betty.

I’m so sorry for your loss of cousin, Godfather, Bernard. I didn’t have a lot of contact with him over the years, but do remember he and Betty stopping in at Mom and Dad’s on Christmas to visit with his Uncle Bob and to enjoy Mom’s rosettes topped with whipped cream. Mom always made sure she had whipped cream when Bernard came.

So many good memories, mostly around flying as he and my dad Ray Dray flew RCA together. My younger brother and I were also lucky enough to enjoy the cabin and snowmobiling with Bernie and Bettie. Bernie’s energy and smile were contagious. He will be missed. - Annette

Bill and I enjoyed visiting with Bernie and Betty at many Merrill Lynch dinners. We shared a love of snowmobiling. Please accept our sympathy.

I’ll always appreciate the love, care and support Bernie gave my father, especially as my dad was growing up. I have many fond memories of both Bernie and Betty coming to join us for the day on the Mississippi river, probably hundreds of times as I was young – and always skiing. We also spent so many times at their cabin enjoying long weekends, full of fun, good food, and lots more water skiing. I’ll always remember Bernie’s daredevilish ways of skiing barefoot and with the kite, and his love for driving his boat fast, snowmobiling, skiing in Colorado, airplanes, and traveling in their RV. God bless you Bernie as I know you’re looking down on us and doing everything you once loved all over again.

Betty and Bernie hold a special place in my heart. We would visit Betty and Bernie more so as an older couple since my mother, Cathy Cerney Wagner, was Betty’s younger sister. I was always in awe of his mechanical ability in building his airplanes; he was always generous with his time in sharing his hobbies with us.  He was a quiet man who enjoyed life! I believe Betty and Bernie were still skiing in their late seventies and early eighties.  Rest in peace, Uncle Bernie ❤️

Uncle Bernie was a vital, active, and athletic man. He and Aunt Betty were a match only God in his heaven could bestow, and together they created a fulfilling life. I was proud to be his niece, and actually got to see him with Aunt Betty at his fire station. He was called into action while I was there. Alarm bells ringing, firemen sliding down the slippery silver pole, only to see their own shoes left empty so to slip on the big rubber boots as they sped off in the firetruck. I was awestruck. My uncle was a hero in my eyes, and always will be. God Bless you, Uncle Bernie. I will miss you.

I was just thinking about Bernie the other day; funny how that happens. Our condolences; one of my special cousins. Love from both Bruce and myself.

I was the first child born to his sister Pat Kluscar (nee Drier) and was fortunate to have spent time with Uncle Bernie & Aunt Betty. I remember him fondly as a vibrant man with many talents. His many years with the Fire Department, serving his community, being an Eagle Scout (I did not remember that, but it is a big deal) and his service to our country are just a few of his many accomplishments. Uncle Bernie's ready smile & laugh made him even more handsome. I loved watching the interaction between the 5 siblings when they got together, a challenge, because of locations. I will miss Uncle Bernie but he will always be in my heart.
