John D. Sexton

John David Sexton of Rochester, formerly of Byron died at age 86 September 17, 2023, at Crestview Villa in Hayfield, Minnesota.

John was born August 26, 1937, in Waseca to Leon Burcham Sexton and Emily Josephine (Groh) Sexton.

He graduated from Waseca High School in 1955 and went on to St. John’s College and Mankato State Teacher’s College.  He was then drafted into the army and served in Germany.

John married Margaret Mahowald of New Prague at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church on April 16, 1959.  After proudly serving in the US Army in Germany he and Margaret were afforded the opportunity to travel in Europe with their fellow military couples. When they returned to the states in 1960, they moved to Rochester and in 1964 moved to Byron to raise their family.

John had a long career with Northwestern Bell/AT&T. After retiring from Ma Bell in the 1990s, he reinvented his skills working in several electrical and computer problem-solving roles and in his final role, he worked for Byron Public Schools.

In their retirement, John and Margaret returned to Rochester.

John is survived by his two sons, Michael (Maria Lopez) Sexton of Douglas, AZ., and Patrick Sexton of Mankato; his two daughters, Jane (Ted) Kramer of Hayfield, and Amy Brown of Eden Prairie; six grandchildren and their spouses, Katelyn (Jacob) Siemers, Kody (Kelly) Kramer, Brady Kramer, Taylor Sexton, Mason Sexton, and Ian Brown; and five great-grandchildren Grayden, Kamdyn, Ally, Klayton and Ava.

John was an exceedingly loyal family man, friend, neighbor, employee, townsman, person. He was the king of dad jokes and “mispronunciations” that were quickly followed by an impish grin and a short chuckle. While he would be described as a kind and humble man, his pride ran deep for all things his children and grandchildren. He loved to follow any activity that any of his children and grandchildren took part in. John was always quick to offer a helping hand to everyone, when help was offered his way, his polite go-to line was always the same “Oh, I’m fine.”

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2023, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with visitation held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.
