Floyd Edward Randall

Floyd Edward Randall at the age of 94 left his earthly home for his eternal home with Jesus on March 25, 2023. Floyd was a beloved Uncle, Brother, Son and friend and will be greatly missed. Floyd was born at St Mary’s hospital on February 12,1929 to Warren and Marie (Grothe) Randall.

Floyd always had a strong work ethic and played hard. In his early years Floyd enjoyed time with his family, cooking with his mother, roller-skating and dancing. In his teens he participated in boy scouts and later became a cub scout leader. In his former years he took pleasure in boating, water skiing, gardening and was always ready for a good party.

Floyd worked at St Mary’s pharmacy when he was 16 delivering medications to the various hospital stations. Floyd graduated from Rochester high school in 1947. On October 9,1950 Floyd joined the army and took training at Fort Devens Massachusetts where he was trained in traffic analysis (Mores code), and crypto-analysis (deciphering messages) and trained at the Pentagon before being stationed in Germany.

His Army duties allowed him much time off to travel.  Floyd traveled to Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Madrid, Barcelona, the French Riviera, Monto Carlo, Salzburg and Austria.  In Bertcher Garden Germany he watched the bobsledding events for the Olympics. Floyd was fortunate to stand by the gates during the Queen’s coronation in London.

Upon returning to the states, he was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan in Illinois on September 19,1953. Floyd then worked at the Rochester State Hospital business office, Big Boy drive in, and Mikes drive in. Floyd moved to Wabasha in 1973 where he enjoyed being a head chef at Pioneer Supper Club for many years. Floyd built 3 homes in Wabasha area.  Floyd later worked as head chef at harbor house in Lake City.

Unfortunately, in 1979 Floyd was in a severe car accident outside of Plainview MN. After a recovery period he went back to school at RCTC for Certified Nursing Assistant Credentials. He was then able to secure employment at Methodist Hospital in the pharmacy department until retirement in 1994. Floyd then engaged in more travel in the USA and Canada. Sadly in 2006 Floyd lost his most of his eyesight to Macular Degeneration and glaucoma. Floyd was able to work as a greeter at Walmart South from 1995 to 2006.

Floyd wished to acknowledge special thanks to his nieces Judy Martin and Lynn Sandstrom for helping him with errands, shopping, medication set ups and appointments. A special thanks you to John Phan a wonderful Landlord and good friend.  Thank you to Jessica and Ashley at Comfort health for their outstanding care. A special thank you to the team at Methodist Hospital station 74 for the wonderful care given to Floyd. Due to his supportive network of friends and family Floyd was able to remain in his home until his 94th birthday.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Marie Randall, infant brother Roger, childhood sister Eileen, adult sisters; Virginia (Jerry) Raymond of Rochester, June (Bill) Maxon of Rochester,  Lillian ( Vernon)   Leqve of Rochester,  Marie Ann  ( Robert)  Lacourse of New York,  and brothers John (Germaine) Randall of Rochester  and Warren (Donna)  Randall of Wabasha.

Floyd was an active member of Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester.  Among Floyds many gifts, was his gift of keeping family close.  He cared for his parents as they aged, he facilitated many reunions, and showed an enduring interest in family events. He loved to spoil is nieces and nephews and was always there for them when they needed him.

A Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. A gathering of friends and family will be held at 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the River Park Chapel.

Michele

Floyd touched the hearts of many. I was honored to work with Floyd in Pharmacy and he maintained friendships with many of his coworkers, years after retiring. Always upbeat and a smile, RIP

The passing of Floyd leaves me with a heavy heart.  Seems like yesterday I was staying with him at his house on the Mississippi River South of Wabasha during our visits to Minnesota from California.  Also, his visit to San Pedro when he gave me a special Birthday when it was just him and I spending the day at Magic Mountain, North of LA.  Floyd was also there helping me with my transition from life in Southern California in the mid-70’s to life in Minnesota, I spent a lot of weekends during my High School years with him at his third house not far from the Pioneer Supper Club South of Wabasha.  One thing is for sure, Floyd was always there for me through the years and even helped me make one of the toughest choices to reenlist for the first time in the Navy, which I had no intention of doing. I actually listened to him and my dad, and look at where I am now… I don’t know if anyone ever noticed, them Randall kids were some of the stubbornest around!

Grandpa Randall’s service in WWI was incredible even though he rarely spoke of it until his later years, and I saw the mustard burns however, father-like-son, Floyd did some incredible things as a Cryptologic Technician during his Army days as well.  Always careful, not to cross the lines, Floyd didn’t speak about exactly what he did over there however, his unit did a lot and had a major impact that gratefully, helped the decision makers win the war… one person can make a difference, a team can make a change!

Thank you, Uncle Floyd, for always being there through the years, from your days at Mike’s, State Hospital, Pioneer Supper Club, Harbor House, and the Methodist… you will be missed by all of us lucky enough to know you… I only speak so much Army, HUA! “Fair Winds and Following Seas,” and I look forward to you and everyone again one day. As grandpa said many times, “friends may come and go, but family, is always there… and you were! Never forget, you were loved by all and you made a difference, I’m not afraid of my shadow!!!

I worked  many years at the Pioneer Club in Wabasha with Floyd. He cooked. I waitressed. We had so many years of great fun and hard work. Some of my fondest memories were made there working side by side with Floyd. Rest in peace my dear friend.

You will be missed, Floyd and I have many memories of June and I getting in trouble with you.  Rest in peace.
