Mona Jeanne Price

Mona Jeanne (Branley) Price, life-long resident of Rochester, died Friday, February 10, 2023, at age 96. Mona was a resident at Madonna Towers in Rochester since December 2014.

Mona was born in Rochester, MN on May 30, 1926, to Regina and Edward Branley.  Her father, Ed Branley, was the editor for the Rochester Post-Bulletin at that time.  Mona graduated from Lourdes High School and the (then) College of St. Theresa, in Winona, MN, majoring in Chemistry.  She worked as a Medical Technician and met her husband, William H. Price, Jr. in Des Moines, IA while working at Mercy Hospital there.  They married on August 30, 1950.

Bill and Mona raised their five children in Rochester – Virginia Lee (Ted Young), William Hundley III (Gail Foster Price), Thomas Edward (Peggy Cooney Price), Stephen Richard, and Sara Jeanne (Michael Pardy). Mona was active in the League of Women Voters, the choir at St. John’s church, numerous volunteer activities and, most notably, bridge.  At one point she belonged to three different bridge clubs.

Mona was an avid crafter, especially needlework and quilting. Everyone in the family is a beneficiary of Mona’s beautiful handiwork! She also loved to read and travel. She always had a book in her hand. She travelled extensively in the years following her husband’s death in 1972, visiting many European countries, Australia, and the Holy Land. During those years, she worked as a laboratory technician at the Mayo Clinic for several years in the Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) lab.

Mona was a warm, fun-loving person who cherished her large extended family. She is preceded in death by her husband, William, her son, Stephen, and her brother Brendan Branley.  She is survived by four children, five grandchildren (Barrett Price, Noah Young, Matthew Young, Madeleine Pardy, and Samuel Pardy), three great-grandchildren (Barrett Jr., Nella, and Jameson Price), her sister Patricia Branley Weingart and her sister-in-law Nancy Price.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 16, at 10:30am at the Madonna Towers Chapel, in Rochester.  Donations can be made to the Benedictine Foundation, Rochester campus (www.benedictineliving.org/giving/).

Condolences

The family of Mona Jeanne Price has received the following condolences.

Mere words can not express our sorrow at the news of Mona's passing.  Sometimes quiet and unassuming, Mona was always very quick witted. I suspect that came from her playing many bridge hands, NO TRUMP, haha, together with her interest in Chemistry, Books and Travel.

Whenever given the chance she would launch into the current activities of her children and grandchildren. Mona was a very special, kind, and thoughtful person and that was the way she raised her over achieving children.

In the book Little Journeys into the homes of great teachers, there is a synopsis of the life of St. Benedict who as the story goes sat on top of a pillar for over 20 years.

In her own way, Mona "sat" at the top of the family pillar without the benefit of her husband after 1972 for over 50 years, providing and dispensing wisdom and knowledge and love. It is truly the love she gave freely that my family will remember her for.

Mona was in her own way, a woman for all seasons. May God bless each and every member of the extended Price family as you celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman!

Mona was always a lovely presence and had such a calm and quiet personality. She will be missed in the world. May she Rest In Peace.

I met Mona when I worked as the Spiritual Care Coordinator at Madonna Towers.  What a gentle, kind, caring, faith-filled woman!   Mona never missed our weekly Rosary Group followed by a sing-a-long, and she was always ready to go to Mass on Sunday mornings.  We were both delighted to find out that we had something special in common…we were both graduates of the College of St. Teresa in Winona!  Before COVID, the alumnae association hosted a little alumnae gathering at Madonna Towers…Mona and I were both there, singing away “Mid the bluffs so strong and true stands the college that we love…..”.    Sending thoughts and prayers to Mona’s family.  May God bless you all with peace and loving memories, and may Mona now enjoy eternal life.   Sister Sue Reif, OSF (Assisi Heights)

Madonna was so blessed to have known you, Mona. Your warm presence will be missed. Please know all of us are here for your family.

Sincerely - Madonna Towers staff
