Janet Lorraine Coleman

Janet Lorraine Coleman was born the oldest of seven on October 18th, 1935, in Austin, Minnesota, to James Bernard Sullivan and Lorraine Margaret Anker. She graduated high school in 1954 from Lourdes High School in Rochester, MN.  She then completed her LPN training from St. Mary’s School of Nursing two years later.

Janet was introduced to her future husband, James Coleman, by a good friend and co-worker.  They were married on January 5th, 1963, after which they moved to New Hampton, Iowa to farm and start a family. James and Janet would have three children; Karen, James, and Sharon. As a family they would move to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1985. After working for 10 years as a private-duty nurse for Ms. Ruth Mason, Janet opened an in-home daycare for the neighborhood children and their friends.

Janet loved gardening and spending as much time as possible outside, which included camping with her husband and grandchildren. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and it was known to never call her during a game if you wanted her full attention. Janet was a devout Catholic throughout her life and taught religion class (CCD) while living in Iowa. James and Janet were long standing members of St Francis Church in Rochester as well. She would teach the children’s liturgy during Sunday Mass and they would say rosary every Wednesday after the children’s mass to pray for world peace and recently departed souls.

A nurturer to the core, even in her later years while living at Madonna Towers.   She always made sure to keep Grandpa in check and found a new love for bingo with her fellow residents of the skilled nursing wing.

Janet is survived by her children Karen Grev, James (Julie) Coleman, and Sharon Coleman, and her sisters Joyce Davidson, Joanne Paradis, and sister-in-law Judy Sullivan, and Sr. Margaret Coleman. She was a beloved grandmother to Christina Grev, Kayla Coleman, Noah Coleman, Isabella Coleman, Jonah Coleman, and great-grandmother to Theo Manning. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Coleman, and son-in-law, Craig Grev.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St. SE, Rochester. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of the service. Janet will be laid to rest with her beloved James at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN on Monday, April 20th.
