Josephine “Jo” Kapinos

Josephine Agnes (Ullom) Kapinos was born on February 20, 1931, to Edward and Josephine Ullom, Sr., in Portsmouth, VA. As the only girl of Edward and Josephine’s four children, she was affectionately called “Sissy” by her friends and family. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1947, she worked as a secretary at Portsmouth Naval Hospital where she met Harry L. Kapinos. They married in 1953. Throughout Harry’s time in the Navy, they relocated their growing family to new homes in Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Maryland. Josephine, Harry, and their five children moved to Rochester, MN, in 1970 following Harry’s retirement from the Navy. Josephine worked as a secretary, first for AFL-CIO and then Mayo Clinic’s Board of Radiology, retiring in 1993. Josephine and Harry celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on November 14, 2003.

Josephine overflowed with love for her family, her pets, and her faith. She always had a smile, a kind word, and a piece of chocolate for anyone who stopped by. Her kindness, faithfulness, and love will be missed.

Josephine has been preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents, Edward and Josephine Sr.; her brothers, Michael and Edward; and her sons Michael and Harry Jr.

Josephine is survived by her children: Robert (LeAnn), Jonathan (Judy), and Mary; grandchildren: Anthony (Lisa), Peter (Nicole), Lenny (Emily), Curtis, Jonathan, and Aaron (Jenna); and great-grandchildren: Madison (Zach), Madeline (Riley), Dominic, Gabriel, Eliza, Mathias, Anthony, Vivian, Gillian, Henry, and Theodore.

A Funeral Mass for Josephine will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Madonna Towers. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Burial will take place in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Condolences

The family of Josephine “Jo” Kapinos has received the following condolences.

So sorry for the loss of your mother.  I worked with Jo in the Mayo Health

department back in the 80's.   She was a neat lady and I enjoyed working with her.

John & Kapinos family,

Our sincerest sympathy to you & family.  Your mother Jo was an angel on earth inspiring everyone she met with words of encouragement & her generous smile.  She was not only a gift to us alll, but a mom to many.

Lil Molenda, Boomer & Sandy Molenda

Josephine was truly a generous woman.

i cherish knowing her and the many gifts she shared.

My deepest sympathies to the family. My ex-husband used to work with Harry many years ago and our 21 year old daughter is named after Josephine. They both were wonderful people and now they are together again.

I loved my Aunt Sissy so very much...I still have all the jewelry she shared on one of her last visits to Virginia...May God bless and the family...

My deepest sympathy to you and your family Jon at this time.  Thinking of you all and knowing she is at peace. Blessed be her memory.

I had the pleasure of working with Jo @ Mayo Health Plan in the late ‘80’s.  She was the kindest person and took great care of our team.
