Karston K. Brotherson

Karston Keith Brotherson, age 34, passed away tragically on September 30, 2024. He was born to Chantel Rae Brotherson on August 28, 1990, in Des Moines, Iowa. He married Emily Brotherson (West) on September 16, 2017. Through that union, Roewyn was adopted by Emily, and Cole and Mya were created.

Karston was a man of many passions and talents. He loved spending time outdoors, whether playing disc golf, working in his workshop, fishing, or exploring the Boundary Waters. He enjoyed cheering his children on at sporting events and showing off his backflips on the trampoline. Known for his quick wit and remarkable intelligence. Karston was full of random facts and could beat anyone at trivia. Karston was a skilled craftsman and builder, able to fix anything that came his way. His love for woodworking and creativity in building made him a resourceful figure in the lives of those who knew him. Despite his many gifts, Karston faced struggles with mental illness that he fought silently. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for resources and services.

A son, husband, and father, Karston is survived by his wife, Emily, and their three cherished children, Roewyn, Cole, and Mya. His mother, Chantel Brotherson; Grandparents, Keith and Ilene Brotherson, Aunt Angie Brotherson, and Cousin Derrick Gallegos; Mother and Father-in-law Mike and Regina West; Brother-in-law Jacob West (April); Sister-in-law Hannah Perry (Nathan) and two nieces, Cora and Cate and nephew Bridger and Grandfather in-law Douglas West and many extended family members.  He is preceded in death by his cousin Hannah Pavlock.

Karston will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the memories of laughter, love, and the countless moments shared with family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. We invite all who loved him and his family to join in remembering the joy he brought into our lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to NAMI in honor of Karston’s memory.

Condolences

The family of Karston K. Brotherson has received the following condolences.

Dear Family,

Please know you are in my prayers and I will light a candle for Karston tonight at mass.  I only met Karston this past year while working with him and Kruse lumber for new windows for our home. He was an amazing young man and we had many great conversations. He was so knowledgeable professional, and went above and beyond to help my husband and I.  I regret that I had not taken the time to stop in again and thank him, as I had intended to do to show him how wonderful our project looked when it was completed, all because of his recommendations.  I regret I missed the opportunity.  My deepest sympathies to your family.  May God’s love provide you strength.

I went to elementary school with Karston and have a memory of playing jump rope with him at recess in 4th grade. As a little girl, I enjoyed having him with us on the playground. I remember Karston as a fun, kindhearted, sweet boy. I thought of him randomly in recent years and wondered how he was doing, but couldn't find him on social media. It sounds like he became a fun dad, met a wonderful wife, was a proud father, and an impactful, valued member of the Rochester community. It is heartbreaking to learn of his mental health struggles and his passing. I am so very sorry for your family's devastating loss. The need for mental health resources and services is a prevalent issue that is close to my heart. Thank you for sharing his story.

Chantel, Keith, Ilene and Family,

Please know that we are thinking and praying for you at this difficult time.  Sending our love and hugs

Dear West and Brotherson Families,

On behalf of the Egan family, we extend our deepest sympathies to you all. We were truly saddened to hear of Karston’s passing. Having had the privilege of hunting with him, Nathan, and Jake, we will forever cherish those times. Karston’s kindness and sense of humor always made those trips unforgettable—he made everyone laugh and feel connected, no matter the challenge or the weather. He was terrific at chess and could fix just about anything.

We will always cherish the memories of those hunts, during which Karston’s warmth and good spirit shined through. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will always stay with us.

Please know that we are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. We hope you find comfort in the love and support of those around you and the many joyful memories of Karston.

With deepest sympathy,
The Egan Family

My condolences to Chantelle, Keiith, Ilene and the family of Karsten. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

I am overly grateful for knowing Karston. I may have only hung out with him a handful of times but I can honestly say he was such an awesome human being to know. He had such charisma, personality and tons of love for everyone he cared about. Karston, your family and you will always be kept in a very special memory in my mind and heart forever and I truly hope everyone affected by this knows how much I will be praying for each and everyone of you.

Love always and please watch over your family from heaven 🙏
