Matthias Eduard “Ed” Sehl – Rochester
Matthias Eduard “Ed” Sehl II, age 78 of Rochester, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening, September 25, 2024.
Ed was born on January 17, 1946, at St. Marys Hospital Rochester to Francis and Beatrice (Keily) Sehl. He was the oldest of 15 children. He graduated from Lourdes High School in 1964. He attended Washington University in St. Louis, MO, Rochester Community College, and the University of Minnesota, receiving a BA degree in History. On August 30, 1969, he married Jerelyn “Jeri” Ryan in Davenport, IA. They lived in Minneapolis briefly before moving to Rochester in August of 1970 where they lived for the past 54 years. Ed worked for the Nicotine Dependence Center at Mayo Clinic for over 20 years. He retired during the Covid epidemic. He loved hunting pheasants with his brothers and dogs, the Saint Louis Cardinals, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Rochester Public Library.
Ed is survived by his wife Jeri of Rochester, his son Joseph of Apple Valley, MN, 10 siblings, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bea and Francis, sisters Barb and Deb, brother John, infant brother Anthony and an infant son, Matthias Eduard III.
The Funeral Service for Ed will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, October 12, 2024, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel. A luncheon is planned to follow.
Memorials are preferred to Clean Water Action or Lourdes High School.

Dear Jeri,
My sincere sympathy to you on the loss of your husband. While I did not know him, I have known you for years and as we recently chatted and shared that as our life moves on, the changes and loses we experience are difficult. Many years ago, when I started in Rochester as a young nurse, I was teaching students at Methodist -Kahler School of Nursing. At that time Bea Sehl was working in the M-K library. I remember her well as a helpful, kind woman which reflects on the family she raised.

I got to know Ed through my older brother Tom who is the same age as Ed and hung with Ed in the old neighborhood. That was a really nice guy!

Jerelyn and Joe. May memories comfort you as you grieve the loss of your beloved Ed. I always enjoyed talking with him. He had a great sense of humor. I loved his stories about Codge and the lake. I can't imagine his courage with all the health challenges he had and I know he was grateful for your loving care. I like to think he is regaling the family in Heaven of all the happenings. Ed and I were classmates through many years of school....he was one of the nicest people I know. He was kind and funny and smart. He will be missed I am so happy we got to see him just one week ago at our 60yh class reunion.

Sad to see Ed's passing. Many, many cups of coffee with Ed and our morning group. I can picture the group now trying to solve the worlds problems. Everyone enjoying Ed's sense of humor and his take on the days news. So sorry to hear of his passing. Thinking of you all.
I got to know Ed a bit when I was s door attendant at Mayo when he came in for appointments. He was always smilling and cheery, even when he was undergoing health challenges. He is one of the patients that stays in my memory, although its been over 3 years since I left Mayo. Prayers for Jeri and their son, Joe.
The shock and the sadness of Ed’s passing is softened by the memory of many conversations we had these past few years….his voice, his reflection on life, but especially Ed’s humor and laughter. I truly was blessed to know and experience him. At least I have the memories and Jeri to remind me of that fortune in future years.

I am so sorry to hear about Ed’s passing. We go way back to St. Pius grade school, maybe even St. John’s and I still remember him as Edie. Thank you for letting Reggie know so she could let the class know. Ed will be missed by many. Love and prayers for you.

The LHS Class of 1964 had just held our 60th Reunion on Sept. 20-21st, merely days before Ed passed away. It was such a joy to see him! Ed was so very kind, so much fun, and a loyal, supportive friend to all. He used to phone me once in awhile and treat me to a stream-of-consciousness flow of whatever was on his mind at the time.
