John M. Atak

John Mawien Maroor Atak, 84, of Rochester, MN, died Friday, April 1, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

John was born on January 1, 1938 in Kuajok, South Sudan to Maroor Atak and Aluel Madut. Aluel passed away after his birth. His grandmother Adeng played a big role in early childhood by raising and caring until joint boarding school at Kuajok Primary School in 1945. He attended middle school in Tonj Town in Warrab State, South Sudan.Then he later went to Khartoum, Sudan, in 1950 attended St. Daniel Comboni High School. He joined commercial secondary school in Omderman, Khartoum Sudan gardue with an accounting degree 1955. After completing auditing work in various private companies in Khartoum, Sudan from 1956 until 1972. After the signing of the Addis Ababa Agreement on February 27, 1972, He was appointed the president CEO in Wau, South Sudan until 1979 of the Equatorial Trading Corporation, LTD.

He married Mariam Henry Rihan on November 20, 1969 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Khartoum,Sudan. He was the president and CEO of the construction company in Wau, South Sudan in 1979 to 1988. Due to the war in South Sudan he moved his family to Khartoum, Sudan, again. 1990, he opened a  independent contractor business specialist in the export and import food industry in Khartoum, Sudan until 1998. exploring the unknown places for safety and better future for his family they moved to Egypt then Seattle in the United States of America 2000. He attended RCTC in 2008 to 2012 graduated with a bachelor degree in business administration.

John is survived by his wife, Mariam Rihan; five children, Christofar, Salva, Clament, Jovana, and Bona; threeten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; His younger brother Laul Moroor Atak in Kuajok, South Sudan; Tong Atak family; James Tombura Family; Deng Mayen family; Henry Rihan family; families and friends in Rochester, MN and around the World.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Church with Rev. John Lasuba and Rev. Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at the church. After the burial will meet at 1508 Aune Dr. SE Rochester, MN 55904.
