George Levi Gay
George Levi Gay, 82, of St. Charles, MN died January 26, 2022 at St. Charles Care Center in St. Charles, MN.
George was born May 17, 1939 in Lima, Ohio to James and Nelly Gay. He graduated Shawnee High School in Lima, Otto 1958. He then attended North Central Bible College and graduated a minister in 1962 where he met his wife Ondrea Gay of 54 years.
In 1970, George turned an old school building in Galesville, Wisconsin into a beautiful church. He pastored 3 churches in Iowa with his wife Ondrea and 2 children, Janet and David. He came back to MN where he worked at St. Charles High School as a maintenance man 1984-1988. In 1988, he moved into Rochester, MN where he drove school bus for Strains Bus Co/1st Student and then drove shuttle bus taking Mayo employees to work and their cares and still filled in and pastored and did missionary work on the weekends.
He loved being a minister and helping people and being a dad and grandpa. George loved sports – he would umpire games of baseball and basketball. Us kids learned our love of sports and sportsmanship from George. His favorite teams were the Cleveland Indians and even in the nursing home would be on the phone with his sister Georgia while they watched the game from states apart. The Cleveland Browns was his favorite NFL team but living in MN he cheered just as hard for the MN Viking as long as they weren’t playing his Cleveland Brownies. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons Joey and Timmy Scofield for as long as he could he would go watch Joey play basketball and would let Timmy play basketball in his nursing home room. George loved to joke around and be silly. God’s love shined through in his jokes and sense of humor.
George was survived by daughter, Janet Scofield (Gay); son, David (Jenifer) Holseth; 2 grandchildren, Joseph and Timothy Scofield; and siblings, Bill (Linda) Gay, Yuma, Arizona, Georgia Smith of Findlay, Ohio, Ruth Ann Even of Tacoma, Washington, and Nellie Long, Wooster, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ondrea Lee Gay (Holseth); parents, James and Nellie Gay; and siblings, James Gay, Mary McFadden, Ohio, and Walter Gay, Lima, Ohio.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Pastor Floyd O’Bryan officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester, MN.
Family requests those attending wear their favorite sports team apparel in honor of George.
