Marilyn R. Griggs
Long-time Rochester resident Marilyn Rose Griggs, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 4, at Prairie Meadows Assisted Living in Kasson.
She was born in Ruthven, Iowa, Feb. 1, 1924 to Albert Aaron Miller and Agnes Leland Dodge Miller.
As a young woman, Marilyn enjoyed basketball. She attended teacher’s college and taught school after her graduation.
She married Vincent Herbert Griggs July 21, 1947 in Ruthven. They farmed near Emmetsburg, IA, later moving to Armstrong and Estherville and finally to Rochester in 1957.
Marilyn worked in the office at the Minnesota Highway Department in Rochester for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986. She also assisted her husband in their insurance business in their home.
After her retirement, they sold their Rochester home and traveled throughout the US and Canada for many years in their motor home, visiting every state and Canadian province. They eventually settled in Apache Junction, AZ and spent their summers in Minnesota. They returned to Rochester in 2007 for health reasons and to be near their sons.
Marilyn is survived by her sons James “Jay” (Margaret Ontl) Griggs of Hudson, WI and David (Linda) Griggs of Rochester; one sister Marcella Symington of Cornell, WI; grandchildren Anthony “Tony” (Tracy) Griggs of Duluth, MN, Malyssa (Elliot) Woodward of Minneapolis, and Jayson (Melissa) Griggs of Ellsworth, WI; and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vincent; son, Thomas Griggs; brother James Miller; and sisters Mildred Weiss, Margaret Miller, Maxine Minear, Marie Reierson, and Phyllis Mason.
A memorial mass for Mrs. Griggs will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Rochester, of which she was a charter member. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery.
A visitation for friends and family will be held Wednesday, August 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester and one half-hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Memorials are preferred to Resurrection Catholic Church.
