Gladys Frances Born

Gladys Frances (Perko) Born, age 86, passed away at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, MN on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

Gladys was born May 30, 1933 in Ely, MN, daughter of Frances and John Perko.  Gladys spent her childhood in Ely, moving to Rochester, MN to pursue nursing school.  She graduated from St. Marys School of Nursing with a concentration in psychiatry in 1954.

She married her best friend, Robert Born on August 20, 1955 in Ely, MN. After relocating for two years to Pasadena, CA and moving back to Rochester, she practiced private duty through St. Marys while raising her young family.  For 25 years, Gladys worked as a Nurse Manager, often praised as a mentor to many, during her career on the closed psychiatric unit of St. Marys.

Camping across the U.S. with her growing family was a frequent past-time and held many fond memories. In later years Gladys had more opportunities for traveling with Bob, with some of her favorite destinations including Hawaii and abroad, and specifically following her roots and ancestry in Slovenia.  She enjoyed making pasties, potica, cookies, and many other goodies.  Anyone who knows Gladys well, is fully aware of her incredible sweet tooth, especially for chocolate and jellybeans.

Following her retirement, Gladys found great joy in continuing to spend time with her family playing cards, board games, sharing meals, relaxing and boating at their Hayward family cabin.  There was much laughter and many bonding moments that will be cherished forever.

Her many interests, talents with crafts, and hobbies were always abundant including playing the piano, singing, ceramics, reading, quilting, making jewelry, needlework, and doll making.  The family were loving recipients of her talents, and sometimes her many collections.  She loved cats; her favorites were Siamese.

Gladys treasured and maintained the very special friendships she shared with close friends and neighbors through her lifetime; having a passion for Broadway plays, trips to Branson and NYC, Cirque du Soleil (aka casinos), and a wide variety of music.

Extensive adventures ultimately became more challenging with the advancement of her disease, but never took away her desire to live life to its fullest.  Her faith was on her side during her illness, and her family visits are what brought her the most comfort in her final hours.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers John and Joe, and aunts and uncles. Survivors include Bob, her husband of 64 years, her three children: Desiree (Greg) Haspert, Ramsey, MN; Bob (Joan) Born, Byron, MN; Mike (Karen) Born, Neenah, WI; grandchildren, Amanda Haspert, Eric Born, Natalie Haspert, Ryan Born, Camille Born, Meghan Born, Erin Born, and greatgrandson Jayden.

Gladys was a long-term member of the Church of the Resurrection, Rochester.  Due to the current limitations of the COVID pandemic, a limited number of the immediate family will be gathering for a private family service.  Post- quarantine, the entire family will have a special, private celebration of life in Gladys’s honor.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter.  The family would like to extend a tremendous expression of gratitude to Dr. Thomas Poterucha, the St. Marys Hospice Team; Dr. Cory Ingram, Michelle Blankenship, Martha Siska, Michelle Gachne, and Heather Leonard. Also, our appreciation to the nursing staff on Domitilla 4D at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

Youll never be forgotten, that simply cannot be. As long as Im living, Ill carry you with me.

Condolences

The family of Gladys Frances Born has received the following condolences.

Joe and I enjoyed the times over the years that we shared with Gladys and the family.  Our condolences on your loss.

The passing of Gladys Born and reading her obituary took me back 50 years. My first job as a nurse was on the psychiatric floor where she was the Nurse Manager. I remember her for the impeccable detail for the care of the patients on the unit and the staff who cared for them. I can still see her rounding with the Doctors, making detailed notes about each patient so that each patient was given the best care possible.

Heaven has been given a very caring nurse. My condolences to her family.

I worked with Gladys for many years. She was a very fine person and nurse. May God Bless you all and keep you, may his Face shine upon you and give you peace at this time.

Bob,

My condolences and deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of Gladys. Although I only had the privilege of meeting Gladys a couple of times, it was so easy to see her kindness & spirit in Desiree, Amanda, and Natalie. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, and friend who was loved by so many people. My thoughts go out to you and your entire family Bob.

Gladys was a firecracker, I am honored to have had the pleasure of meeting her and spending time with her family. It is clear the mark she has left on this world, it is carried everyday with her daughter Desiree and her granddaughters Amanda and Natalie. She will be dearly missed, until we see her again. I know she is walking around playing the slots in heaven! My condolences and love to her family and friends ❤️

Karen and Mike:

Your entire family has been in our thoughts and prayers over the last very difficult days and weeks. The horror of saying goodbye to a loved one while restricted to who can be present and unable to touch them is unimaginable. We are glad she is at peace and hope your healing can begin.

With love,

Ellen and Tom

My condolences to the family.  I started at Mayo, St. Mary's, Recreation Therapy, when we were on 6-D. I couldn't have had a better example of a head nurse--professional, warm, engaged with patients, nursing staff  and other disciplines, and blessed with a sense of humor. (Much needed at times). She will be missed.

Pat Erkel left a message for me yesterday giving me the news about Gladys’ death. At a time like this I find words so inadequate but I wish to offer my condolences to you Bob, and to your family.

Gladys was a part of our “gang” at SMSN and I loved that girl.  She had such a fun sense of humor and I hold dear all the memories as students and the fun we had at various reunions. Our stories and jokes never got old and we laughed as though they were the first time around.

Selfishly, I was looking forward to laughing with her again at our final reunion, which tentatively is planned for September, but may be canceled due to the virus. Please keep me informed as to your plans for a Celebration of Life.

With caring thoughts. Jennie Paananen Hays

Gladys, my Godmother, what a special gift given to me.  Gracious, thoughtful, kind, generous and talented beyond measure.  My family and I will miss her greatly.  To you Bob, my extraordinary Godfather, we extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family, while holding you all up in prayer during this difficult time.  Sending you tons of love. Louise (Hofschulte) and Steve Pesavento

How fortunate I was to have have  not only worked for but known this wonderful woman on 6DE.

Glades not only advocated for her patients but staff, a nurses nurse.

She shared herself, her cabin and talents.

When I moved to another unit, many times i would reference Gladys and our experiences in psychiatry.

The common theme among those that worked under her continues to this day as how fortunate we were to have shared this nursing journey with her.

Bless her memory..Carol Noonan

Dear Bob, Des, Bob Jr, Mike and families,

We're sorry about the loss of Gladys who was an amazing person and left us with many fond memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.  Hopefully will be able to catch up this summer when things return to some form of normality.  Gladys Rest in Peace.

Love you all,

Gary and Linda

Bob, Des, Bob Jr. and Mike and families you have my sympathy and prayers.  I have had the pleasure of having Bob, Gladys and family as my next door neighbor for almost  sixty years.  One could not ask for better neighbors and friends.  We had so many good times together.  Gladys put up so many years with MS and never let it stop her from being a special person.

Gladys Rest In Peace.  Thanks for all the good memories.  Carol
