Richard L. “Dick” Skogen

The funeral Mass for Richard L. “Dick” Skogen will be 10:30AM Friday, July 16, 2010 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 92 at the church following the service.

Mr. Skogen, age 79, a lifelong Rochester resident, died peacefully in the presence of his family Monday afternoon, July 12, 2010 at Sunrise Cottages of complications of Alzheimers.

Richard Lee Skogen was born February 4, 1931 in Rochester to Melvin and Amanda Anderson Skogen. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1949. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He married Noreen McCarthy December 1, 1951 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester. She survives.

Dick was a salesman for Fuller Brush and Jewel-T while working part-time in the grocery business. He later worked as a salesman for R.C. Drips and Gamble-Robinson, where he became night supervisor. He also continued to work in the grocery business until his full retirement in 2006.

Dick was proud of his 33 years of sobriety and his association with Alcoholics Anonymous. He enjoyed giving to others and played Santa for 25 years, travelling throughout the city bestowing gifts of popcorn balls and lollipops.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons:  Michael (Karen) Skogen;  Steven (Marsha) Skogen and David (Noreen) Skogen. Two daughters survive: Lori Skogen and Diane (Roger) Tlougan along with fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy DeVilliers. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 5:00PM to 8:00PM Thursday at Macken Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Mr. Skogen’s body will be later donated to Mayo Clinic for research. Online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.
