Robert “Bob” A. Ryan

Robert ‘Bob’ Ryan, 89, of Rochester passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at Seasons Hospice surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born August 26, 1929 to Bill and Edith (Lutz) in Millville, MN.  He graduated from Plainview High School.  On Feb. 9, 1957, he was united in marriage to Anastasia (Ann) Quinn along with lifetime friends, Don and Peg Grobe in a double ceremony at St. Frances Church by Bishop Ray Locker.

Bob’s history within the county began when he was hired as deputy assessor in 1967.  Ten years later he ran for the County Treasurer’s position and was elected.  When the treasures and auditor’s positions were combined, Bob became the first person to hold the title of Auditor/Treasurer. He was elected Olmsted County Treasure of the State of MN in 1978, served as President, 2nd and 1st Vice-President of MN State Association of County Treasures, was University of MN Accredited County Treasure in 1992, elected as President of the National Association of Finance Officers – NACTFO 1994-1995, and a life member of National Association of County Treasures and Finance officers – NACTFO. He was recognized by the county of Olmsted at his retirement in 1999 for 31 years of dedicated service. Bob said, “The pinnacle of my career was meeting President William Clinton, Senator Bob Dole and Senator John Glenn at the White House Rose Garden in 1995 as President of NACTFO”.

Bob was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He volunteered many years as assistant coach and head coach of Rochester youth Football and youth Baseball teams. Bob enjoyed playing baseball for many years for the Millville city team.  He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, horseshoes, card playing, golfing and traveling. Bob was an avid Viking and Twins fan.

Survivors include wife, Ann; and children, Renee Jossart (Doug) of Alexandria, John Ryan (Tamara) of Necedah, WI, Teresa Ryan of Phoenix, AZ, Paulette Ryan of Rochester, and Mary Witt (Rick) of Rochester. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Daniel, BJ, Nicole, Matthew, Shannon, Adam, Maisie, Kieran; and eight great-grandchildren, Logan, Benjamin, Ian, Avery, Aaron, Jacob, Clay and Croix. He is also survived by sisters, Judy Kay Russell, of Minneapolis, and Jane Gjerdingen (David) of St. Paul.

Bob is preceded in death by parents, Bill and Edith; sister, Mary Lou (Beckman); and brothers, Jim, Bill, Frank and Jerome.

Family requests memorials to Mayo Clinic Lupus research or Seasons Hospice House.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 20 at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home (1105 12th St. S.E., Rochester) and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

To the Ryan family. I would like to send my condolences to your family on the passing of Bob. He was a great and wonderful man. I golfed with him in the Saturday mensm club at oak summit golf course. He was always there if you needed to have a golf buddy to golf with.
