Richard Lee Grimm
Richard Lee Grimm passed away at his home in Rochester and went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 20 at the age of 88 with his wife, Verleine of 64.5 years sitting by his side.
Richard was the middle son born to Arthur and Alvina (Schauer) Grimm. He was born at home north of Rochester on February 23, 1930. He attended county school which was on the corner of the family property.
Richard was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester where he has been a life-long member.
His first job was as a service station attendant at Standard Oil Station in Rochester. He was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served until 1953. He was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany. While he was there he courted the “love of his life”, Verleine with daily letters. When he returned from the service, they were married on February 21, 1954.
Richard returned from the service and worked at Flom’s Service Station. He also worked at the taconite fields in northern Minnesota before being employed as a front line mechanic at Ford Motors. In 1963, he opened G&R Auto on South Broadway. The business remains open and operated by his son, Larry.
In retirement, Richard enjoyed restoring 8N Ford tractors in excess of 35 or more. He also enjoyed his cabin located up north in Waskish, MN. He did lots of fishing and hunting with his family and friends. Richard and Verleine traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Norway, Germany, England, Switzerland, Jamaica, and Mexico. He also loved to snowmobile, belonged to two clubs and traveled across five mountains ranges in the west. Richard built three campers in his spare time. The family traveled many miles and enjoyed time together “camping”. The last motorhome was named “Grimm’s Fairy Trails”.
Richard is survived by his wife, Verleine; five children, Sherrie (Michael Yochum) Nelson, Randall (Hope) Grimm, Larry (Marcia) Grimm, Robbee (Nimol) Grimm, and Lyndee (Ronald) Cobb; ten grandchildren, Gregory, Rick and Kory Nelson, Nathan, Brady and Madeline Grimm, Nicole (Grimm) Samb, Natalie Grimm, Whitley and Emily Cobb; and six great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Camrin, Lyla, Grace, Ariana, and Ace Nelson. He is also survived by several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Willard and Norman; and his son-in-law, Brian A. Nelson.
Richard had so many talents and will be greatly missed by all the lives he touched.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church (222 Sixth Avenue SW Rochester, MN 55902) with Rev. Joel Haak officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
