Henry T. (Hank) Mewhorter

Henry (Hank) Mewhorter, 87, of Rochester passed away Monday, November 2, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital.

Hank was born in Rochester to Butch and Irene (Courtney) Mewhorter.  He grew up in Rochester and graduated from Rochester High School.  He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, on board the USS Cotton.  Following his discharge from the Navy he worked at Huey’s Liquor Store until he joined the Rochester Police Department in 1953.  He was known as “Officer Hank” to many elementary school children where he taught bicycle safety, with “Mike the Talking Bike”.  He worked for many years at John Marshall High School directing student traffic where he made many friends.

Hank enjoyed hunting, fishing and having a good time talking and joking over a cold beer.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn (Kate) McNeal, his daughters Shawn, Erin and Mary.  He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one grandson.

There will be a visitation at the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home on Friday, November 6, 2015 starting at 1:00 with a Funeral Mass 2:45 pm with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.  An Irish Wake will follow after the visitation at Kings Crossing Bar and Grill, 915  21st  Ave S.E, Rochester.

Memorials are suggested to the Poverello Fund in care of the Mayo Clinic.

Hank was a great man and one that always had words of encouragement to those high school kids that weren't always so receptive to get it. I learned some life lessons from him and was grateful to have known him. RIP Hank!

Dear Kate and Family.  So sorry to hear abount your loss of hank.I showed a picture of hank from the web site to mom, and i could see tears in her eyes.
