John M. Horter

The funeral for John M. Horter will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday October 28, at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, with Rev. Lester Horntvedt officiating.  Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.  The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Mr. Horter, 89, of Rochester passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015 at his home under hospice care.  He was born March 1, 1926, in Congress, N.Y., to Gladstone and Sarah Horter.

John was raised in New York and later moved to Minneapolis.  Following his time in the US Army he moved to Rochester to work where he met his wife Arlene Benike.  They were married October 15, 1949 in Rochester.  Arlene died June 4, 2002.

John worked for Westinghouse in the elevator repair division at the Mayo Clinic.

Woodworking, building things and helping people is what he liked to do.  He enjoyed socializing with family and friends and was the best grandpa ever.

Survivors  include two daughters, Barbara Peterson (Jeff Boehm) and Marjorie (Mark) Maitland, 5 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife Arlene and a daughter Joan Horter.

The family prefers memorials to Mayo Hospice.

I was so saddened to hear of Uncle John's passing.  He was a wonderful man.  I remember many Christmas Eves as a child when our family would stop by John's home to celebrate, and he was always so welcoming.  John was a good friend to our father Alton.  We are thinking of John's family and sending healing thoughts and prayers to you as you celebrate his life and mourn his loss.

As a child John made me laugh whenever he came to our family's home. He enjoyed putting a smile on our faces. A natural ham! He also was generous with family and friends! We are very sorry for you loss!
