John Francis Bruning, 86, of Rochester, died peacefully in the early morning hours of August 24, 2015 at the Homestead in Rochester, MN.

He was born March 12, 1929 in St. Cloud, MN to Ray and Eva (Hirt) Bruning.  He was the youngest of 5 children and the last surviving sibling.  He graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud in 1947.  He continued his education at St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN and transferred to St. Cloud State where he graduated with a business degree in May 1951.  Right out of college he entered the U.S. Military Service.  He was a Sergeant in the Army and served his time in the Korean War from 1951-1953.  He returned to the States and started working for Western Electric in St. Paul.  There he met Phyllis (Pam) and they were married on December 26, 1955.  They moved to Omaha for three years before moving to Rochester to work for IBM in 1960.  He retired from IBM in 1990.

John was co-chair of the Building Committee for both Pax Christi and Holy Spirit Catholic Churches in Rochester.  He was a member of the Elk Lodge and Knights of Columbus.  He loved to fish, hunt, garden, golf and play cards.  He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Condolences

The family of John F. Bruning has received the following condolences.

Hi Pam.  My sincere condolences on John's passing.  We lost touch for many years but for some reason I thought of John today so I "googled" him and saw the obituary.

As you may recall, John was one of my first managers at IBM back in the 1960's.  I learned a lot from John and fondly remember his guidance and expertise.  I carried pieces of that through my IBM career of almost 43 years.  I respected John a lot and remember many good times back in those long ago days.

Please know that Cindy and I are sending our sympathy and prayers for you and your family.
