Michael Lee Whalen

Michael L. Whalen, 68 of Rochester, passed away Friday at his home.

Michael was born on November 21, 1945 in Pipestone Minnesota to Morris and Dorothy Whalen.  He graduated from Stewartville High School and then served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.  In 1983, he married Gloria Zimmerman.

Michael was retired from Apache Mall in Rochester where he had worked for 30 years as an engineer.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his mother, Dorothy Whalen of Rochester, one sister, Karen McMurtry of Albuquerque, New Mexico, three grandchildren and sisters and brother-in-laws.  He was preceded in death by a son, Shane in 2012.

Michael was a member of the VFW and American Legion.  He enjoyed camping, fishing and deer hunting.  He enjoyed traveling to Mexico during the winter.

A visitation will be held from 4pm – 8pm on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home.  A luncheon will be held from Noon to 2pm on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the VFW in Rochester.

Mike was friends with my husband Kent Borgstrom and oh how the two of them used to laugh and hang out at the VFW. They sure had a good time together.
