Katherine Marie “Kathy” Washburn

Katherine M. “Kathy” Washburn, went home to the Lord Thursday, July 2, 2015 after courageously battling mesothelioma.

Born Katherine Marie Anderson to Maurice and Ruth (Sorsveen) Anderson on April 9, 1941 in Brainerd, MN, Kathy lived in Brainerd until her high school graduation in 1959. She then attended the University of Minnesota School of Dental Hygiene, graduating in 1961. While at the U of M, she met the love of her life and on July 14, 1962, married Francis J. Washburn. After living in Newfoundland Canada until 1965, Kathy and Fran made their home in Rochester where Fran started a dental practice and Kathy joined him for 20 years as a dental hygienist.

Kathy loved to help and serve others which was evident from the many organizations for which she volunteered including: PEO Chapter BM (for 32 years), Eden Garden Club, state and local chapters of the Zumbro Valley Dental Auxiliary, and Methodist Hospital Auxiliary (for 34 years). Her infectious smile and sweet disposition will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by husband, Francis; daughters Kristin (Gregg) Gabriel of Independence, MN and Joelle (Leif) Syverson of Minnetonka, MN; five grandchildren Ryan and Kevin Gabriel and Ellyse, Elliot and Aaron Syverson; sister, June Stahl of St. Paul; four nieces and two nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, July 9 at 11:00am at Autumn Ridge Church with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Autumn Ridge Church, Humor to Fight the Tumor Foundation, or Mayo Hospice. Macken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.

i am so sorry to read of your great loss.  I fondly remember MANY hours of fun and laughter at your house during our teenage years.  Your wife & mom had such a distinct, sweet laugh that I can hear as I write this to you.  I know you have many fond memories to get you through the difficult days and weeks ahead.  Even though I am far away, I hold you all close in heart.

Fondly,

I just don't know what to say but I am saddened that my friend Kathy couldn't beat this ugly disease!  Ever since she was diagnosed & receiving treatments, you would of never known she had an issue!  She was upbeat, smiling, laughing, & always ready to give you a hug & say "Well, how are you doing, I am fine!"  She never said a bad word about anybody, she definitely was a role model!  I will always cherish knowing Kathy & what a wonderful friend she was!  Rest in Peace Kathy-you handled this disease with dignity & that was the kind of woman you were. You were definitely beautiful, dignified, gracious etc. etc.  Helen

How can I write in words what my friend Kathy meant to me?  She was the sweetest, kindest and the most gentle woman I have known.  Fran and Kathy were Az and Mn dental friends.  We played and loved life together in Sun City West.  We attended church together and I saw her faith in action.  I loved her like a sister.  Our deepest condolences to her lovely family and to our dear friend Fran.  Ann and Howard
