Josephine “Jo” Hughes

The memorial Mass for Josephine Hughes will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Rochester with Rev. Peter Schuster officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday.

Mrs. Hughes, 90, of Rochester, died Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Golden Living Center East in Rochester. Jo was born December 27, 1926 in Chicago to Anton and Anne Slavik Vihnicka.

Her family later moved to Dodge Center, MN where she graduated from Dodge Center High School in 1944. Jo married Earl D. “Jack” Hughes on October 23, 1948 in Dodge Center, MN and the couple later moved to Rochester. Jo most recently worked in the cancer registry dept. at the Mayo Clinic until her retirement in June of 1991. She was a charter member of Resurrection Catholic Church. She was very involved in her church and she also volunteered at Dorothy Day House. Jo loved to work in her yard and garden or just to relax outside on the deck any time the sun was shining. Her family and friends were the grateful recipients of her cooking, baking and flower arranging skills.

Josephine is survived by her daughter, Alanna Owens of Rochester; and four grandchildren, Anna and Samantha Hughes, Jacob (Sarah) Junge, and Sarah (Dirk) Eichler. Her great grandchildren, Brendan and Nicholas Junge, and Paul and Madelynn Eichler also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, William and Thomas Hughes; and her daughter, Deborah Junge. Her sister, Anne Vihnicka; and brother, Anthony “Tony” Vihnicka; and niece, Julie Vihnicka also preceded her in death

Josephine’s family would like to thank Dr. Hogan, Tom, Darci, and Jen in the hematology dept at Mayo Clinic for their care over the years.
