Grant A. Kirgis

Grant Albert Kirgis passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and support of his wife and children on May 18, 2024 at St. Marys Hospital.

Grant was born November 5, 1948 to Ludwig and M. Elaine (Stucki) in Red Wing, MN.  After graduating from Pine Island High School in 1966 he enlisted in the US Airforce, serving in the Vietnam War. In 1970 he married Penny Berndt and graduated from Winona State University in 1973 and worked in the accounting field. In 1976 he started his CPA practice and continued working until his recent illness. During his life he was a Cub Scout leader, won the Mayor’s Medal of Honor for his work with the disabled community, and was on several boards.  He loved traveling with Penny and their friends, and especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren. Despite his physical limitations he lived his life to the absolute fullest, never taking his opportunities for granted.

Grant is survived by his wife, Penny, daughter Lisa (Justin) Belknap, along with 4 grandchildren, Milo and Eloise Mudra & Finn and Rhys Belknap, sisters, Avis Jackson (Emery) and Rosemary Heimberg, brother Ross (Pam) Kirgis, sister-in-law Linda Kirgis and brother-in-laws Dan (Sandy) Berndt and Rocky Berndt (Kathleen Lynch) along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by son, Brett Kirgis, parents, Ludwig and Elaine Kirgis, in-laws, Milo and Phyllis Berndt, sister, Avon Gille, brother, Gary Kirgis, brother-in-law Frederick Heimberg and niece, Connie Dose.

A memorial service will take place on May 28, 2024, at 11:00 am in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Channel One Food Shelf (www.helpingfeedpeople.org).

Penny,

Our sincere condolences to you at this difficult time. Grant will be missed by all who knew him.

We only knew Grant for a short time.  His daughter married our son and he welcomed our two small grandsons into his family with open arms.  He’ll be missed that’s for sure.  Our sincere sympathy goes out to his wife Penny and daughter Lisa.  May your memories give you comfort.  We will miss seeing you Grant.  Rest well.

I am so sorry for your great loss.  Grant was a friendly and kind man.  I pray that your family may find peace as you look back upon your memories of Grant, as well as knowing that he is in heaven with his son, Brett. Peace be with you all.

Penny & family,

We are so saddened to hear of Grant’s passing. We are sending thoughts & prayers of comfort.
