Emogene “Dusty” Lula Brown

Emogene L. ‘Dusty’ Brown, 89, of Rochester died Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th following a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 10th at 11AM in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester with Pastor Dave Berg officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the memorial service at Oakwood Cemetery.

Emogene Lula Rhodes was born October 9, 1927 in Sparta, Wisconsin to Harry Colfax Rhodes and Edith Eliza (Russell) Rhodes. She lived in Sparta until the age of 16 when her family moved to Rochester. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1946 where she belonged to the concert and marching bands, and was a National Honor Society member. She attended Rochester Junior College and worked at several local businesses including Rochester Dairy and Lawler’s Cleaners. On September 11, 1948, she married Donald A. Brown at Trinity Lutheran Church. After her marriage, Dusty worked in the Business Office at Mayo Clinic for 10 years until the birth of her first daughter, Lynnette. At that time, she became a full-time homemaker. Two more daughters followed, Michele and Wendy.

Dusty was very active in the Washington Elementary School PTA, Brownies, and Girl Scouts. In 1972, she received special recognition for her service as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and had her picture on the front page of the Post Bulletin. She was an avid bowler, bowling in the “Cereal League” for over 30 years at Recreation Lanes. She spent many an Easter Sunday morning helping make scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes at Gloria Dei Church for the Easter Sunday Brunch. She was a wonderful cook and baker – no one made better meatloaf, baked beans, potato salad or yellow cake with browned butter frosting.

She loved music and talked about how she and siblings would gather around the piano to sing the popular songs of the day, hymns, and Christmas Carols. Big Band tunes from the 40’s and 50’s were some of her very favorites. She enjoyed gardening and filled the planter in front of the house with petunias, marigolds, alyssum, and geraniums every May. The first week of October found Dusty and Don on their annual road trip to Grand Marais, Minnesota – one of their favorite places and where they spent their honeymoon.

In 2009 she and her husband found a new home at Shorewood Senior Campus. After Don passed away in 2012, Dusty moved to Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th. Her room boasted one of the best views ever, looking out towards Silver Lake – perfect for viewing the fireworks on the 4th of July! She never went anywhere without a fresh coat of lipstick, Kleenex in her pocket, and hair in place with a whoosh of hair spray.

Dusty is survived by her daughters, Lynnette (Mark) Stadtherr of Wabasha, Michele (David) Vanderburg of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and Wendy Brown of Spring Valley; eight grandchildren, Ari Stadtherr of New Brighton, Kelsey Stadtherr (fiancée Chris Lee) of Waseca, Lindsey (Rod) Fleming of Raleigh, North Carolina, Sean (Shannon) Vanderburg of Garner, North Carolina, and Aaron (Ellen) Burt, Jade Burt, Allison Burt, and Drew Burt, all of Rochester; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her spouse, Dusty was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Caroline Staniford and Wilma Harrie; and brothers, Russell Bell and William (Bill) Bell.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff at Samaritan Bethany who took such good care of Dusty during the past four years.

Memorials are preferred to the family.

Condolences

The family of Emogene “Dusty” Lula Brown has received the following condolences.

Family of Dusty Brown
I am a volunteer at Samaritan and was so saddened to learn of Dusty’s passing. We had been out of town. I met Dusty at the nursing home when I visited my Mom each day. I knew her for only a short time, but found her to be a great friend, fun to be around and will always treasure the memories. She was a radiant ray of sunshine who was always eager to talk/laugh and/or play cards. I loved to hear her stories as we sat and talked about her life, family, friends and experiences. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends during this difficult time. Dusty will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace. Wendell Kuehn - Volunteer

So sorry to learn of the passing of your mom. She was such a beautiful person, she always made a person feel so welcomed & loved.  She will be greatly missed, but please try to find comfort in knowing she can now enjoy all the beauty of heaven and will be there at the gates just waiting for the rest of us to be called to our heavenly home!  Hugs to all of you!

To Dusty's family;  I AM A VOLUNTEER MEDICAL ESCORT AT Samaritan Bethany and live at Arbor Terrace which is an independent living part of Samaritan Bethany.  It was my privilege to accompany your mother on her last visit to Mayo Clinic. I looked forward to the opportunity of getting to know her better after her scheduled appointment there but unfortunately that was not to be since a staff member came out after some time to tell me they were going to send her to the hospital because of some kind of reaction during her procedure. Later I noticed her obituary. It was interesting for me to read about her very full and meaningful life and it sounds like you as a family were a big part of that as well. Gloria Dei was mentioned and we have a number of members living here so I plan to ask around about those who may remember her from there. Her passing must have been so unexpected as it was also to me. So just wanted to send my sympathy to you folks. I trust that you found comfort as you gathered for the Service and were supported by the friends who were able to come today. I was unable to since I had a commitment at the Clinic. God Bless her memory and all of you!  Luther Olson  (I noticed a reference to New Brighton, familiar to me since I was once a pastor there).

Our sympathy and prayers are with you.

You may have asked the same question that is found in Job 14:14 which says, "If a man dies, can he live again?" Please rest assured that the answer to that question is yes. Jesus will call and our dead loved ones will answer according to John 5:28,29" Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his (Jesus) voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment." What a wonderful day that will be to reunite with our loved ones. Please accept my deepest sympathy, and may Jehovah God comfort you and your family during this difficult time.

So sorry to hear about Dusty.  I know you will cherish all of the memories you have with her and your father.  Her smile and great laugh could fill a room!

We are so sorry about your Mom Dusty. What a beautiful person she was -  so full of life! God bless all of Dusty's family, especially Dusty and Don together in heaven. You are all in our prayers.

Sending our deepest sympathy to you all. All our love Michele and Max

Extending our deepest sympathy to Lindsey, Rod and family.  Be Blessed!
