Michael B. O’Sullivan, M.D.

Michael B. O’Sullivan, M.D., age 88, passed away peacefully at Charter House in Rochester, MN, on April 20, 2024. The sixth of seven children, he was born to Nora (née Ahern) and Mícheál Ó’Súilleabháin on August 20, 1935, in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland. His upbringing in Listowel instilled a lifelong love of learning, a strong work ethic, a competitive spirit, an appreciation of music as the universal uniter, and a steadfast pride in his Irish heritage.

Michael graduated from medical school at University College, Cork, Ireland, in 1959 and began his postgraduate studies in Buffalo, NY. The death of his father took him back to Ireland shortly thereafter. He married Margaret Stack on January 25, 1962, and returned to the U.S. to serve in the Armed Forces at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL, as Captain from 1962 to 1964. Upon fulfilling his military commitment, he and Margaret moved to Rochester, MN where Michael began his fellowship in Hematology and Pathology at Mayo Clinic. He joined the staff as a consultant in Hematopathology in 1969.

In his early career, he led the development of the regional laboratory program to provide laboratory services to small hospitals in the region around Rochester with the goal to improve quality of care. This strategy grew and is now Mayo Clinic Laboratories, serving patients and healthcare organizations worldwide. After 15 years as Chair of Lab Medicine and Pathology, Michael led the development of Mayo Health System which acquired physician-led community clinics and hospitals within the region to be an extension of Mayo Clinic and to enhance clinical practice and patient care in those communities. Ready to climb one last mountain for Mayo Clinic, in 1997, Michael headed west as the CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where he led the practice to success in the competitive Scottsdale market and oversaw the successful opening of the Mayo Clinic Hospital. He retired from Mayo Clinic in 2002.

Throughout his life, Michael was regarded as a visionary leader, for his disarming personality, and for his powers of persuasion. He and Margaret hosted countless dinner parties and gatherings for dignitaries and friends alike and welcomed all with warmth and gracious hospitality. His after-dinner singsongs were legendary. Many of these gatherings were held at Michael and Margaret’s beloved lake home on Spider Lake near Hayward, Wisconsin. He loved everything about his Heaven-on-Earth and was particularly proud of the times he strapped on his skis to complete 10 Kortelopets and 1 Birkebeiner. Spider Lake was Michael and Margaret’s retirement home until they moved to Charter House in 2019.

Michael leaves behind his wife of 62 years Margaret, his daughters Nora (Dan Nelson), Deirdre (Mark) Palmer, and Finola (Mike Busch), sons Paul and Stephen, grandchildren J.P. Salvatierra, Olivia Nelson, Helen, Anthony and Caroline Palmer, Charlie, Spencer and Michael Busch, and Desmond and Myles O’Sullivan; sister Sr. Lelia (Bríd) O’Sullivan and brother Joseph O’Sullivan; sisters-in-law Agnes Andrews and Marie O’Sullivan; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Seamus, Patrick and Denis and sister Maura Kelly, sisters-in-law Sr. Rosa Stack and Josephine O’Sullivan, brother-in-law Eamonn Kelly, niece Ann Marie Lynch and nephew Brian Kelly.

Michael’s family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the excellent care he received at the Mayo Clinic, in particular from Dr. Eric Edell and Dr. James Hill, from his Mayo Hospice team, and from his caregivers Mini Collett, Heidi Coyer, Kim Yokiel, and in particular Grace Ibsen and Amy Allen who provided tender and affectionate care in his last hours.

A wake will be held in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home on Thursday, April 25 from 5-8 p.m. where a singsong will send him off in style at 7:00PM. The funeral will take place at the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Friday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. with The Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the gathering space at Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Please join the family in singing Michael’s favorite hymns at 9:45AM in the church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael B. O’Sullivan M.D. Medical Technologist fund at Mayo Clinic or to the charity of the donor’s choosing.

Condolences

The family of Michael B. O’Sullivan, M.D. has received the following condolences.

So sorry to hear the sad news that Michael OSullivan passed away.

I will always remember him as the CEO who turned things around at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.
He really saved us from what may have been our early fiscal demise.

He was always fair, honest, and a true gentleman.

I remember shortly after arriving in Arizona, Mike O’Sullivan invited each one of the physician staff to his office for a one on one interview. He asked each of us for our thoughts and recommendations for how to make things better here. He made us all feel we were a vital part of the plan for the future of Mayo Clinic.

He inspired each of us to do our personal best.

We all loved the special touch that Michael and Margaret shared with us.

Dear Nora, Dan, Olivia, JP, and your entire family,

We never had the honor of knowing your dad, but what comfort you must be getting with the abundance of sweet, warm, funny memories of him.  He accomplished so much in his lifetime, but we think the most important was leading a close and happy family.
“Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near.  Still loved, still missed and very dear.”

Kitty and John Pallanch

Stevenson, Washington

Dear Margaret, Nora, Deirdre, Paul, Steve, Finola and your extended family, our sincere condolences on the recent passing of Michael.

We remember him with great fondness, his warmth, intellect, great interest in everyone, hospitality and singing voice. He and all his family were lovely friends when we lived in Rochester and Scottsdale. What a legacy he has left at Mayo clinic and beyond! He made a wonderful imprint on this world.

May he rest in peace

Deepest condolences to the O’Sullivan family. Dr. O’Sullivan was a dear mentor to me. May he rest in eternal peace.

Beloved O’Sullivan Family and dearest Maggie, we are holding each and all of you with abounding love and tender hearts. The service was touching and captured in so many of all the words shared Michael and his very essence. We were there in spirit and on live stream. We will sing many songs throughout the day in honor of our most cherished and dear friend, Michael. It was an honor and privilege to have his friendship. All love, Shay & Phyllis

Rebecca and I were saddened by the death of Michael but celebrate his long and successful life. Michael and I worked together as he shepherded the growth of the Mayo Clinic Health System. His warm and engaging personality and his commitment to excellence were an inspiration to me. My career at Mayo changed due to his influence and support. When I saw Michael at Charter House recently he still had the twinkle in his eye and Margaret by his side. We will all miss him. Rob Nesse

There’s nothing I can say to fully explain how grateful I am for the O’Sullivan’s and their impact on my life. To put it simply, they are my family. I am forever in your debt Dr. O’Sullivan. Thank you all????

To Maggie and all of the O’Sullivans, Palmers, Bushes and Nelsons:

I’m thinking of you during this time. I first knew Michael as Deirdre’s dad, but in the years since we first met,  he and Maggie (and all of you) became friends/family to me and Tong, and our kids. Our lives are infinitely better because Michael and the rest of you are part of them.

I think the first time I heard of Spider Lake, Maggie and Michael was when Maya spent close to a week there when she was 6 or 7 years old? At the time I thought, these Irish strangers with all their grandkids visiting them probably really don’t appreciate Maya interfering with their family time at the lake. Maya had so much fun, she made Deirdre and Mark bring her again. Once we bought our place up there, I saw that Maya wasn’t a burden to them, or interfering with family time because it appeared she had just become part of the family. I knew how Maya felt because I never turned down an invitation to come over, nor did I turn down an opportunity to invite myself over…  ???? I also learned, the O’Sullivans have a gift of adopting a lot of people into their fold.

The last time I saw Michael, his big soft pillowy hands had thinned, like the rest of him. I can’t forget his voice, telling a story, laughing, singing, or giving direction. I won’t forget the warm way he and Maggie always made me feel when we visited them at Spider Lake.

I will miss Michael greatly, and carry him with me in my heart.

Love you,

Tasha, Tong, Phoenix, Lucy and Maya

My sincere condolences to the O'Sullivan family on Michael's loss. He was instrumental in guiding me toward a wonderful career in Pathology, in the USA and then in Ireland. He was also a great Kerryman and played Gaelic football with my uncle in Listowel. I was so pleased to hear from Mr. Listowel, Vincent Carmody, that Michael was honoured in his hometown last year. Dearest Nora and O'Sullivan family

My heart goes out for you during this profoundly sad time. Your father was a remarkable man whose spirit illuminated this word and blazed an extraordinary trail throughout his life.

The countless lives he touched through his work in medicine stand as a testament to his incredible vision and compassion. His legacy shines as brilliantly as the emerald isle, his home country .

While the pain of losing such a colossal figure may feel insurmountable now, I know you will carry his memory in your heart where it will continually inspire you with joie de vivre and integrity.

I am so very sorry I am not able to join the sing along. You and the entire family are in our thoughts.

With lots of love,

Duska and Slobodan

Dear O’Sullivan family,

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father and grandfather.   I will be forever grateful for the opportunity Dr O. and Jerry Wollner gave me to be part of the early MML family.  I recall with such fondness an early Christmas party at your Plummer Circle house and one of his famous “singsongs”.  We were a small group back then and every member of the team was invited.  Some of the songs were so funny and by the end he was laughing as hard as we were, even though I’m sure he had played them many times.   I recall the furniture in the large living room pushed out toThe edges and you, Margaret, teaching us the Irish jig. We were not good dance students.  There may have been a “wee bit of Christmas cheer” involved!!

Dr O. made Lab Medicine and Mayo a better, brighter place by his presence and his leadership style. He lead with competence and with joy. His memory will live on in those he mentored and the careers he nurtured-including mine.

I’m so sorry to have to miss his service and the opportunity to tell you this directly.

In Sympathy,

Sharon Dunemann

Dear Margaret, Nora, Paul. Steve, and Finola,

I'm terribly sorry for your loss.  The many years of old Irish memories remind me of all the ties that bind us together.  May God hold you in the palm of his hand during this time and rest assured Michael has already charmed his way into Heaven.

With Love,

Fiona, Dan, Killian and Kellyn McKee

My heart is heavy with sadness over the passing of a great man. My first experience at Spider Lake was as a guest of the O’Sullivans and my childhood was defined by countless wonderful evenings filled w song and love and always closing w Dr. O singing Danny Boy. I’m sure he’s up there now singing  it now and will forever be in my memory. My heart is with all the O’Sullivans at this time. Love, Hadley
