Margaret “Peggy” Armstrong
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Margaret Carol Armstrong, known affectionately as Peggy, who left this world on March 25, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on June 23, 1933, in Watertown, South Dakota, she was the beloved daughter of Carl and Mildred (Knutsen) Hanson. A true pioneer of her time, Peggy attended a one-room country school before graduating from Watertown High School, setting the foundation for a life dedicated to service and caring for others.
Peggy’s adventurous spirit led her to the skies as an airline stewardess for TWA before she found her true calling in nursing. For many years, she dedicated herself as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the illustrious Mayo Clinic, Methodist campus, where her compassionate care touched the lives of countless patients.
In her personal life, Peggy was a vibrant soul who thrived on connection and joy. She had a passion for ballroom dancing, even waltzing with the legendary Fred Astaire, making memories that will be cherished forever. Known for her exquisite penmanship, she lovingly wrote heartfelt letters to family and friends, an art that expressed her enduring connections. Her green thumb flourished in her love for gardening, where every bloom bore witness to her meticulous attention to detail.
Peggy was a devoted member of Zumbro Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, enriching the lives of those around her with her beautiful voice. As a strong-willed and loving caregiver, she selflessly supported her parents and younger siblings, embodying the essence of generosity and kindness. Her baking skills adorned gatherings with sweetness, as she delighted family and friends with her homemade treats.
Peggy is survived by her siblings: Kenneth (Linda) Hanson, Shirley Gibson, Richard (Pat) Hanson, Elaine Hanson-Hysell, and Keith Hanson, as well as numerous cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, David, and her beloved parents.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2025 at Zumbro Lutheran Church, 624 3rd Ave. SW, Rochester, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory. We invite all those who knew and loved Peggy to join us in remembering a woman who dedicated her life to the care of others and whose spirit will forever dance in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army, Channel One Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club in Rochester, or to Zumbro Lutheran Church Open Table Ministry.
In her honor, let us carry forward her legacy of kindness, attention to detail, and the joy of connecting with others. Rest in peace, dear Peggy.
