Leif “Curly” Bollesen
Leif “Curly” Utoft Bollesen finalized his smile in this earthly world on December 15, 2024. The five ladies in his life are heartbroken, yet grateful, for his 92 years loving on us. People say that the Danes enjoy simple pleasures and meaningful connections – that’s our guy.
Curly was born to Jens and Karen Bollesen in the Danish immigrant community of Tyler, MN on March 19, 1932. He was baptized and confirmed at Danebod Lutheran Church. He accomplished his studies at Tyler High School, Grandview College, Augustana University, Winona State University and Arizona State University. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Curly taught Physical Education at Rochester Public Schools for 31 years. He was the first Developmental Adapted PE (DAPE) Teacher in Rochester and made such an impact on the lives of children with disabilities and their families; it was truly his life’s work. He was so proud of starting the Rochester Raiders Adapted Floor Hockey Program and he was their number one fan!
Curly married Joy Louise Draisey on August 12, 1956, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clark, SD. This was when the fun began. After marrying, they lived in Tyler, MN; Garmisch, Germany; Lincoln, NE; and in 1960 made their forever home in Rochester, MN. Curly loved having a lot of women taking care of him – he had four sisters that doted on him and then went on to have four daughters he adored.
This man had so many passions! A zest for life and life loved him back! Our favorite Danish tradition he passed on was dancing around the Christmas tree singing Nu är det jul igen (“Now it is Christmas Again”). He loved: all things sports! (particularly if his grandchildren were playing!), golfing, desserts/sweets, deer hunting at “the shack”, his neighbors ‘like family’ in Country Club Manor, bird watching, starting up ‘The Handyman Can’, wintering in Arizona, fishing and camping, playing poker, worship services, cold beer, traveling to Hawaii, the Quarterback Club and listening to Joy play the piano. Most of all, though, he adored being a Bedstefar “Bestie” to a slew of grand dogs, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What a wonderful life!
Curly was proceeded in death by his parents and his siblings/spouses: Herdis (Ray) Struss, Kai Bollesen, Ellen (Allan) Juhl, Ester (Bruce) Westling and Agnete (Art) Fredrickson.
He will be greatly missed by Joy, his wife of 68 years. Children: Denise Bollesen (Bob Berggren), Karla Bollesen, Marta (Robert) Milliken and Elise (Rob) Cothern. Grandchildren: Nils (Katrina) Berggren, Jens (Shelby) Berggren, Bria Berggren; Annika Bollesen, Mikka Bollesen; Max Cothern, Tate Cothern, Brody Cothern, Griffin Cothern. Great-Grandchildren: Leona, Cecilia, Rory, Brooks, Kora and Briar Berggren.
In keeping with his generous spirit, Curly gave the gift of education by brain and tissue donation to the Mayo Clinic medical community. Our family is so grateful for the staff at Marcella Manor and St Croix Hospice who took such loving care of him (and us!). He would love memorial contributions to Bethel Lutheran Church, The Arc Minnesota-SE Region, the Rochester Raiders Adaptive Athletics Programs or wherever your heart is driven to give. Or just smile and start up a conversation – that’s what he would do!
A service celebrating Curly’s life will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Bethel Lutheran Church (810 3rd Ave SE; Rochester, MN 55904). The family will greet friends starting at 11:00am. A luncheon will follow the service.

Condolences
The family of Leif “Curly” Bollesen has received the following condolences.
Joy and family, it was with sadness that I read of Curly’s passing. I first knew Curly when I came to Rochester in 1972 as a special education administrator. He was a truly remarkable educator and an individual. His dedication to young people with special needs was beyond measure. He was so passionate about developing the adaptive physical education program that thrives yet today. I could always count on Curly to stop by my office with the latest Ole & Lena jokes, and others as well!!
Mary and I send our condolences.

Dear Carla and family,
I read of Curly’s passing and wanted to thank you all for supporting him, bringing his joy, love, and wonderful spirit to us.
I won’t be able to attend his funeral, but know I will be there in spirit and gratitude.
Warmlly,
Gus Braga
Mr. Bollesen was my Phy Ed teacher at Sunset Terrace (1968 to 1973). I moved into a new school in 2nd grade, and he made me feel so welcome. He continued my whole time at Sunset Terrace to be so friendly and kind. He was my favorite teacher and I'm sure many others. After working in schools and seeing other Phy Ed teachers he was the best. Please give sympathy to the family.

I worked with Curly when I first moved to Rochester. He was so kind and always had something to chat about. He had the best Adaptive PE program. He truly loved the kids he worked with. My sympathy to you all. Pam Shaft
Evelyn and I send our condolences to the family.
I first knew Curly during my years in the Rochester Public Schools. Wonderful, kind, compassionate, and caring person and teacher.
I also played many rounds of golf with him at Eastwood.
There are few people in this world who could match Curly in terms of character strengths and virtues. Perhaps none.

Joy and family,
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Curly and my dad worked together and painted together. In 1983, I started working i in the school district in the department of special education. I had the pleasure and honor of being Curly's secretary for six years! He would take the stairs to 3rd floor. He would start yelling, "Sandy, the dandy. Guess who's coming." It was so fun being his secretary. Curly is unforgettable.
God's Blessings to you all.
Sandy
Our sympathies to all.

Mr. Bollesen was my phy-ed teacher at Edison in the 1950s. He was a great guy full of enthusiasm back then, and also years later when I would occasionally run into him in my adult years.
You have my deepest sympathies at this time of loss.

Sending my best wishes and sympathies to all of you in Curly's family for the loss of your special husband, dad, and Bedstefar. Living two doors away from him as we were growing up in Tyler was a rare treat. Curly, or Basse, as we knew him when we were young, was more than our favorite cousin. He was like a second dad to my brother, Bob, and me. Playfully, he always called us Lefty Gomez and Peanuts Lowrey, baseball nicknames he coined for us. We looked up to him and cherished the time with him when he was home and would play catch with us. We relished adventure trips like driving all the way to Nebraska with him to go to a baseball game. And all the while riding anywhere with him, we were fascinated by the magic steering wheel knob on his hot Chevrolet, which he had somehow wired to also beep the horn of his car. Always full of fun, ever with a smile, I'm sure Curly spread that kind of zest for life to hundreds of other young people. We just were lucky to be near the head of the line. Many kind greetings from Erik Hansen

Curly was the most wonderful man and neighbor. He always had a wave, a smile, a hearty laugh or kind words to all of us. My 4 girls loved him. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. My sympathy to the family but hold all your wonderful memories close to your heart. Loved you Curly!
