Helen was born March 5, 1940, in Superior, Wis., to Arlette and Ari Karanikos. She had two sisters, Gloria and Frances.

Helen’s courage and thirst for adventure lead her to La Crosse, Wis., where she met and married Richard Hannum. They raised four children. Over the years, she pursued a variety of careers including: Secretary to the President of Gateway Trucking, Graphic Artist and Claims Adjustor. She was bright, articulate and extremely curious about everything around her.

Helen is survived by her children, Robert Hannum of Tucson, Ariz., Sara Karanikos of Rochester, John and Sheila Hannum (beloved daughter-in-law) of Manitowoc, Wis.; son-in-law, David Kuecker of La Crosse, Wis.; her grandchildren, Katie Kuecker of La Crosse, Wis., Alexander and Miranda Hurlebaus of Rochester and Thomas Hannum of Manitowoc, Wis. She was blessed with one great-grandchild, Nicolae Hurlebaus of Rochester.

Helen was preceded in passing by her daughter, Trudy Kuecker, father and mother, Ari and Arlette Karanikos, sisters, Gloria and Frances and her ex-husband, Richard Hannum.

Helen has requested no funeral service. She will return home to La Crosse and be laid to rest next to her daughter, Trudy in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.

Her children and grandchildren will celebrate her life by gathering at Big Al’s in La Crosse to share her favorite meal of a burger and French fries. All are welcome to join and share a memory directly after her interment on Friday, Oct. 4.

Condolences

The family of Helen Hannum has received the following condolences.

What a beautiful bride Helen was.  Although I did not attend the wedding, the picture is the Helen I remember.   I'm sorry I didn't see her much after that time.  I know she loved her children and I'm glad to know now how much they loved her.  I'm proud to call her my cousin.

With my sincere sympathy,

Darcy Osterlund

Sara, Bob, Alex and Mandi

We are terrible sorry for the loss of your Mom and granma.. May she Rest in Peace finally and may you have the most wonderful memories of her, I know she left an impact on my family.

She made Juamaine feel good about helping her light her smoke with his really strong thumbs..LOL

She was so generous with Pascaul when he was helping her to move, and well they both thought she was really cool to let them drive her little black car to Rochester..

My first meeting with Helen was when I helped Sara move her to Rochester, and what a lovely lady she was, a tad demanding at times..but ever so nice and kind.

I know I could not believe the amount of food Helen could eat in those days, i often thought to myself - she is so skinny where does she put it.

I enjoyed visiting her and chatting and I Thank Sara for sharing her Mom with me, I remember her always wanting her nails done and like Mandi I too was allowed this simple pleasure .

To you guys I know there will be many a story about your Mom and many a chuckle, and I hope it's the happy and different memories that one will treasure.

Thank You Helen for enriching our life and for allowing us to be part of your life.

Thank You Sara and Bob for sharing your Mom with me...I know Helen and I would give Sara grey hairs sometimes...heehee....I have wonderful memories of your Mom..

To my amazing friend Sara, I am so sorry I cannot be with you at your time of need, you are always there for everyone else, and I feel so bad and so much heartache for you right now. Please know I am thinking about you and sending lots of luv and positive, strong thoughts.

May God Bless you all ..

All our love and deepest condolences,

Michelle, Mervyn, Pascaul and Juamaine.
