Bunnie Powers

Bunnie Powers-Rochester

Our mom, 89, of Rochester passed away Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. at Charter House from a lengthy battle of Parkinson’s disease with her loved ones by her side.

Bunnie was born on May 25, 1930 in Bellchester, Minnesota. She was raised on the family farm on Pepin Hill in Wabasha, Minnesota and was a graduate of St. Felix High School.  Bunnie lived in Rochester her whole adult life and on June 11, 1955 she married James Powers at the St. Felix Church in Wabasha. James died in 2002.

In the 1950’s Bunnie worked in the business office at Mayo Clinic. When her sons, Joe and Cris opened the Canadian Honker Restaurant Bunnie worked there for over 30 years.

She was active in her church St. Francis of Assisi and belonged to the St. Joan of Arc CCW. Bunnie was a Eucharistic Minister, Lay Carmelite, and former member of The Serra Club and was on the Finance Committee at St. Francis Church. She also was also a member of the Apostle League at Prior Lake Retreat and a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary where she was a past president. Bunnie was a fundraiser for Guest House Bishops Reception; a cover girl for the Rochester Women’s Magazine and was famous for her coconut cake.

Bunnie enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, watching football especially the Vikings! She loved flowers and enjoyed reading to her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children; Kelly Mechelke and Kerry Powers of Rochester, John Powers (Sue Ellen) of Centerville, Minnesota, Joe of Rochester and Cris (Roxanne) of Zumbro Falls,  12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, three sisters; Lorraine Nadler and Adelaide Edwards both of California and Margaret of St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Revs. James Berning and Timothy Reker officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

The family of Bunnie Powers has received the following condolences.

Dear Powers Family,

Belated condolences to you all with Bunnie's passing.  She was a great friend to my Mom and she always was smiling and full of joy.  We will continue to remember her especially when we eat her famous cake.

Dan and Rita (Sell) Marquardt

To all of the Powers Family,

I just heard that Bunnie passed away on Thursday, the day after the funeral. I was out of town on the weekend and missed the news of her passing. I am so sorry I was not there Tuesday and Wednesday. I feel horrible. I so loved Bunnie, like everyone else in her fan club.  Bunnie was the best and the brightest. I was lucky enough to see her often in the Charter House area from time to time because of working over there once in awhile. I just saw her not very long ago and we had our usual fun chat. Please know that my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Bunnie and all of you. We were all so lucky to have known and loved such a beautiful and giving person.

Bunnie was a special lady!

She will be missed!

Our deepest condolences to the Powers Family on the loss of Bunnie. What a lovely woman who touched so many lives in such a positive way. We are in Jerusalem this week and will offer prayers for her in this holy place.

Don and Sharon Hagler

I have known Bunnie almost all of my life (she was always proud to share that she was my Sunday school teacher) and I remember enjoying her baking long before it became famous (her coconut cake has no competition)!  I always enjoyed talking with her each and every time we met as she treated me like she had just seen me the day before - asking after my family, telling me about hers, and sharing a compliment or a sassy little joke to make my day.  It is an end of an era for the Powers family, however, her kind and giving spirit (with that big smile) will long live not only in her family but in many of us that she touched along the way.

Thanks for sharing her with us and Godspeed on your next journey, Bunnie!

“…and until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand”

Powers Family, I am so sad to hear about the passing of the wonderful and beloved Bunnie Powers. It was always so nice to run into Bunnie. She had a huge smile on her face and always was very happy. She was one of a kind, had a wonderful family and has left a great legacy here on this earth. I will always remember Bunnie and her smile. God Bless to Bunnie and the Powers Family. She is off to Heaven and will be the new ringleader of happiness there. We love the Powers and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Celebrate her wonderful life. God Bless - Mary Anne and Gerry Nonn

Gone to the heavens is one remarkable and sweet lady. Bunnie was a true gem and although I met her later in life, I thoroughly enjoyed her presence when I would visit the Honker with my folks while in Rochester. Her lovely smile, warm embrace, & tentative ear were always treasured. Our many shared conversations with plenty of laughter will always bring a smile to my face. Although she has left the physical realm, I know her beautiful spirit will live on in all those who were blessed to have known her. I extend  my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends at this time.

Bunnies was a wonderful person.  I was very fortunate to have met her.  Blessings!

Kerry & family.  I’m sorry to hear of Bunny’s death.  She was the “human tornado”, always on the go.  What a life lived to it’s fullest. Hugs & love sent your way.

Dear Powers family, so sorry to hear of the loss of your Mother. She was truly one of a kind.

Our sympathies to the Power's family. She was a great lady, and her cake is amazing. Hugs!?

You all are part of my "growing up in the neighborhood" favorite memories.  I always thought she was one of the "Great Mom's" I had around me during those years.   My blessings to you all at this time.  <3

Gail (Polka) Arnold

Bunnie was the most wonderful person in the world. It was so great to see her at Canadian Honker. She always came and talked with you at your table. It was so comforting to see her with all the restaurant staff. God used her in such a beautiful way.

The coconut cake was my favorite dessert at the restaurant. It showed her feminine side, mother side and mostly giving side. Thank you to all of her family for sharing her with us over the years. She is now with her wonderful mate!

So very sad to see that Bunnie has passed. What a wonderful woman, mother and kind soul.

Bunnie became one of my dearest friends when I began working in the Mayors office in 1973.  Jim was on the City Council at the time and Bunnie and I shared many memorable times together at various functions held throughout the year.  She was always available to lend a helping hand.  She hosted an annual New Year’s Day gathering at their home for many years which everyone in town ( it seems) looked forward to attending.  It became a tradition to celebrate the onset of each New Year at Jim and Bunnie’s House.

I always admired Bunnie for her deep faith, love for her family and friends.  I can not recall her ever making a negative remark about another person....whether they voted for Jim or not!  She was always positive and upbeat, even in the most trying circumstances during these last years battling Parkinson’s Disease. She never complained and had nothing but praise for her doctors and caregivers and especially her children and grandchildren.

I, along with her many, many friends will miss Bunnie ....... until we meet again.

No finer woman, the world over. I have so many special memories of conversations with Bunny. She was one of a kind and the beacon of the Canadian Honker. Her "Bunny Cake" was famous throughout the world. She once baked me a gigantic one for my birthday. This woman was kind to the core. So sorry to the family. I know you will miss her sweet guidance and unconditional love for all of you. May she join Jim in heaven and enjoy an eternal life in the arms of God. She earned it!

Bunnie modeled her faith with grace and inspired me. I am sorry for your loss.

Bunnies Powers was one of the most loving women I have ever met. I spent a lot of my high school years at the Powers home. She truly was like another mother to me. She will be missed here on Earth, but will be welcomed by many in Heaven. Michele & I send our love and sympathies to the entire family. Dave Vanderburg

i am so saddened to hear of Bunnies passing.  She was such a wonderful woman.  I have great memories of Bunnie and Jim stopping at my in-laws after a round of golf. She will be missed by many.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her entire family.  Linda(Peter) Murphy

I’m so sorry for your great loss.

Powers Family......I am so very sorry for your loss.  Bunnie was wonderful...always a kind word and a smile.  Hugs to all of you and keeping you in my prayers.

We are very sad to hear of Bunnie’s passing, she was such a sweet lady and made friends with everyone she met.

Bunnie was a sweetheart and such a beautiful soul. I recall when i worked as an Assistant manager at Peck and peck she would have me be her wardrobe consultant to help her get ready for trips or any activity she was involved in. She was one of my favorite people! An her famous coconut cake! Gosh such a dear treasure for us all to lose. My condolences to the family and prayers during this time. Heaven has gained another precious Angel.

She was a lovely lady. You have gained a special guardian angel.

Not very often in my lifetime have I ever met someone with a more infectious smile and overwhelmingly positive presence. I am so honored to work in a building that Bunnie put so much of herself into. Everytime you walk into the Canadian Honker you can feel the love, and a lot of that love comes from her and what she put into the world around her.

To all the Powers, I wish you so much peace and happiness. You are an incredibly generous and hard-working bunch, due mainly because of the influence Bunnie played in your lives. You are all in my thoughts, and in my heart.

Love, Michelle and James Provance

To Bunnie’s family.

I know you will all miss that wonderful mom of yours. Bless you for all the love you gave her.

What a great lady! Did you ever see Bunnie without a smile on her face? She was always so gracious, kind and loving.

Any chance, now that Bunnie has passed, that the recipe for that famous cake will be given out? (naw I don’t think so). But let’s celebrate her life anyway!? Love you Bunnie.
