Alvin “Al” Hein

Alvin Willis Hein, 81 of Rochester died peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on September 30, 2017.

Al “Jr.” was born in Rochester to Alvin and Edwina “Babe” Hein on March 18, 1936. He attended school in Rochester and graduated from Central High School in 1954. He married Ruth Gruenhaupt on December 29, 1957 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester. They were blessed with three children. Al retired from City of Rochester Park and Recreation Department after 47 years and was also a longtime member of the Rochester Eagles Club. He volunteered at the Eagles Cancer Telethon for many years. Al and Ruth are longstanding members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Al loved spending time at the cabin in Wabasha, where he loved to fish and watch all the activity on the river. In his retirement, Al especially loved working for Bushel and Peck Apple Orchard near Lake City. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and they in turn loved listening to his many stories. Al’s main hobby was woodworking, and many people still enjoy sitting in his famous rocking chairs.

Al is survived by his wife Ruth of 59 years, children David (Debi) Hein of New Ulm, Kristi (Lincoln Bauman) Hein of Rochester, Jeff (Shelly) Hein of Rochester, four grandchildren, Michael (Sarah), Miranda (Brad Kronback), Cole, Riley, two great-grandchildren Zamara and Sam and his sister Jo Ann (Mike) Vath of Farmington.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister.

The Memorial Service for Al will be on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 11:00AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester with Pastor Adam Koglin officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church.

Memorials are preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Rochester Eagles Cancer Telethon.

Our sympathies to each of you at this time. We will always have fond memories of Al. Wayne will remember the handing off of the spatula in the kitchen at Redeemer for Easter breakfast! Al helped make Wayne feel part of the church and being involved down in the kitchen.

God's peace to you all

Julie and I were blessed to have lived on 17 1/2 Street, across the street from Ruth and Al. Al Hein was a good man; friendly and considerate to us and our new family. He was a master of chicken BBQs and the block party for the neighborhood. Al connected us with new friends and opportunities throughout the City of Rochester. He introduced me to the Eagles and I became a member. We remember his big laugh and strong desire to have a good, honest conversation. We are forever grateful for all your generosity as our memories never fade from our days in Minnesota. May God bless you Al Hein.

Dear Hein family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

Love the picture you used here as that is the way I remember Al, with a big smile on his face.

May God give you comfort and peace.

Ruth, Dave, Kristi, Jeff and family,

So very sorry to hear of your loss.  I have sweet memories as I'm sure you all do as well.  Until you are reunited with him again, hold your memories close.  Love to you all.
