William J. “Bill” Verdick

The funeral Mass for William J. “Bill” Verdick will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday April 27, 2015, at the Church of the Resurrection with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday April 26, 2015, in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Mr. Verdick, 86, of Rochester was called to God Friday, April 17, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Bill was born September 23, 1928, in Mound Township, MN, the second son of William A. and Emma Depauw Verdick. Bill was raised at St. Joseph Orphanage in Wabasha, where he was known as “Neb” and became a beloved older brother to the many younger orphans. He was then hired as a farm hand on the Lehmann farm until the age of 18. After Bill graduated from Hokah High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force in September 1951, serving much of his duty in West Germany. When he finished his service, he hitchhiked home from the port in New York City back to MN. On a blind date, he met Margaret “Marge” (Gossman) Verdick, and the couple later married on June 30, 1956, at Saint Columban Church in Preston, MN. They farmed in Preston and Cresco, IA, before moving to Rochester. There, Bill worked at Crenlo for more than 30 years, where he made many friends. His beloved wife Marge died on June 20, 2009, and Bill lived at their home for his last years. He was a brief resident at Samaritan Bethany before being admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Survivors include his five children Mary (Michael) Daily of Lakeville, MN; William (Paulette) Verdick of Rochester; Jeanne (Rita Peterson) Verdick of Richfield, MN; Karen (John) Mozina of Rochester and Daniel (Elizabeth) Verdick of Woodbury, MN. He also is survived by nine grandchildren, Nicole, Matthew, Andrew, Bridget, David, Nathan, Laura, Olivia, and Zachary, and two great-grandchildren, Katryn and Kellan. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother Wilmer.

Bill was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, where he ushered for more than 47 years and loved singing the many hymns over the decades he attended Mass there. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, and the weekly broadcasts were a fun part of family life. He had a green thumb, tending many indoor plants over the years, and planting flowers all around the yard each spring. Bill enjoyed games and sports his whole life, including baseball in his youth, “sockball” and horseshoes with his brothers-in-law, and bowling and golfing leagues with his co-workers. He had countless stories about being raised in an orphanage and his years in the Air Force. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed by his family and friends.

Condolences

The family of William J. “Bill” Verdick has received the following condolences.

Bill Verdick Family,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this difficult time.

Kent and Becky Perlich

Verdick Family,

So sorry to hear the news of Bill's passing. Hold dear all the great memories!

May God bless you peace.

My husband was fortunate to have been friends with Bill during their time at Crenlo. I heard countless "Bill Verdick" stories over the supper table. What a sense of humor he must have had - though they haven't worked together in over 20 years, Al remembered some of the stories this week. May you take some comfort in knowing how many lives Bill touched over the years.

Al and Cheryl Hanson

Karen and family, I am so sorry for the loss of Bill. What a great man has was! I loved to hear his stories and enjoyed teasing him about his love for the Packers! Who can forget such a wonderful, warm and loving smile he had!

Jeanne and family,

Very sorry to hear of your loss. You are in our thoughts during this time. God bless your wonderful father.

Dear Bill and family, sorry to hear about your loss. I will pray for her and your family.

To the family of Bill Verdick:

We wish to extend our sincere sympathy to each of you especially Bill Jr. on the loss of your beloved Father, Grandfather, and Uncle etc.  Art was a member of the Rochester Police Dept. also.  Although we did not know your father well, He was truly a good man.

  Sincerely,

  Art and Helen Mueller

Bill Verdick is my uncle.  We spent a lot of time at their house in Rochester when I was a little girl.  When I was small, Uncle Bill was a little scary to me!  So ridiculous!  He had this INTENSE deadpan stare.  He stared into my soul, I swear.  When we had big dinners at their house, and my dad would reach for the butter, he used to say things like "You haven't eaten for a WEEK knowing you were coming over here!"  Or just, "Hey!  Lay off the butter!  That stuff is expensive!"  Totally kidding the whole time of course.  As I got older I came to know what a sweet, funny guy Uncle Bill is.  He's so much like Marge's brothers.  One of them being my dad.  They were always cracking wise.  The Bill Verdick family was always very close.  There was never a sour word spoken in that house that I ever heard.  All of my Verdick cousins are kind and caring.  This must be the result of growing up with Bill and Marge.  It was a happy household.

I'm sad to see the passing of both Bill and Marge.  It just doesn't seem right.  But they lived well and left a wonderful legacy.

All the best to you Bill(y), Mary, Jeanne, Karen, and Dan.  I'm sorry for your great loss.

Cousin Kelly

Bill, thinking of you and your family... So sorry for your loss

Bill & Paulette

So sorry for your loss.  I know you will miss Bill, he is in a better place and with your mom.  Our thoughts are prayers are with you.

He was a customer of mine at Cub Foods, a funny guy. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Please know you'll be in our prayers. Steve and Trish Stensrud

Bill and Marge have been a wonderful part of my life since I was 16 years old and dating Marge's brother Vince.  I enjoyed being a part of their lives and never thought of one of them without the other.  Although we will miss Bill so much, I feel a joy in my heart that they are now back together.  I know it will be so hard for his close family.  Please accept my sincere condolences.

Dear Bill and Verdick family,

All of you are in my thoughts and prayers as you mourn the loss of your father and grandfather.  In my experience, I've found it to be important to focus on the many good years of good times, rather than the last weeks and months of life.  Hopefully you can do that as you move forward. I am sure there is much to celebrate.

Jeff
