Wayne, 65, of Rochester, MN, died in his home of natural causes on Tuesday (January 21, 2013).

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Wayne had a big heart and lived life in constant, thankful service to others.

Wayne was born December 12, 1947, in Winnebago, Minnesota, to Clarence and Beatrice (Anderson) Smith. He graduated from Huntley High School in 1965 and later attended technical school for electronics in Mankato. He then enlisted in the Navy and served from 1968 to ’71, with two tours of Vietnam on the U.S.S. Decatur and 13 months at McMurdo Station in Antarctica in electronics support for international scientists.

On November 6, 1971, he and Joleta Ann Hervey were married in Winnebago, Minnesota. He later earned his Associates Degree in electronics from Rochester Community College. Wayne was employed by Mayo Clinic, IBM, Maysteel, and the History Center of Olmsted County in addition to running his own landscaping business.

Wayne was an active member of Rochester Covenant Church, the Rochester Male Chorus, the Mechanical History Roundtable, and the Elks Club. As an avid volunteer, Wayne took church mission trips to the Appalachias, Chile, and Chicago. He participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He was also active with the Youth Mentorship Program.

Wayne enjoyed creative woodworking, gardening, home improvement projects, and travel with Joleta .  They visited China, New Zealand, Chile, and more in the past decade. Wayne took special joy in playing with his two grandsons.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife Joleta (Hervey) Smith; son Aaron and girlfriend Katie Lundgren of Madison, WI; daughter Megan (Smith) Fisher, husband Jeremy and grandsons Zane and Jack of Golden Valley, MN;  Sister Eileen DiMarco of Genoa City, WI; Sister Margaret (Ron) Fosdick of Burlington, WI; Sister-in-law Pam Mathiason of Rochester, MN; Brother-in-law Dwight (Dedra) Hervey of Winnebago, MN; 8 nieces and nephews, and 5 great nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Merlin Mathiason.

Condolences

The family of Wayne B. Smith has received the following condolences.

Kathryn and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to your family during this time.  We just met Wayne this summer as we were preparing for our wedding at the History Center.  He donated a lot of his time to make our day special helping us clean up the barn, move equipment, and put down new floors.  Our wedding day would not have been the same without his dedication and hard work.I know that he will be missed greatly as he truly had a servant's heart.

Wayne Smith, IS our dear friend, comrade, bud... always to be remembered.
We did so many projects together at the History Center,,, hours and hours of effort..always with laughter and devoted in getting it done right.  If one could not think of a solution, the other would.

We will continue to Celebrate Wayne's Life... he was an inspiration.

Three things last forever...Faith   Hope   Love
and the greatest of these is love.
Wayne lives on in the LOVE he shared with his family and friends.
We will miss him.  But when the time comes I have  FAITH
Wayne will be there to pick us up with his  wagon and team of horses and
HOPE that he will have thought up some projects and fun for us to do together.

Gordy and Jan Haubenschild

Dedicated to Wayne in Celebration of his Life

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;
Who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children;
Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it;
Who has left the world better than he found it,
Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
Who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had;
Whose life was an inspiration;
Whose memory a benediction.

Joleta-

I am shocked and saddened by Wayne's passing.  I can't believe it.  He will be dearly missed. If you need anything, anytime, I am here for you. You are loved, Joleta.  Jo and I hold you and your family in our prayers.

Dear Jo, so sad, so soon. out here in calif, he is "Wayne the sailor", to our kids. when he was on the tin can in long beach, he visited us often. he bought us a dwarf Meyer lemon tree, still producing. Beaca and Clare came out once. we went down to the ship, went aboard and had lunch in the mess hall. he had a motor cycle. when he was discharged, he left it with us to sell. son Scott remembers that, i don't. he called me from the anarctic a few times. when he worked for IBM he visited a contractor here in Camarillo, so saw him then a few times. so many good memories.   with love, cousin Dick

Joleta and family,

Mae and I were extremely shocked and saddened by the news of Waynes sudden passing. Wayne always made me feel like he really cared about what was going on back in Bago and Huntley when we would talk. Paying attention to detail always seemed to be an attribute that Wayne had. Wayne struck me as being a "pay it forwrd" type of person. Good deeds that we do WILL come back around many times over, and they do not go unnoticed. Being a "little bit older" neighbor of mine back in good old Huntley, I can still remember being on corn drives for the 4-H club, gathering corn that had been missed by the ear corn picker. Even then lending a helping hand. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Scott & Mae Robertson

Wayne was a wonderful friend who I will miss dearly. He was extremely handy and always willing to help. Moreover, when he said he'd do something, you could count on it being done well.  It's hard for me to even imagine the Rochester Male Chorus or History Center without him.

Dear Joleta,

We heard the sad news today of Wayne's passing. Our hearts are broken. Our prayers are for you and your family.

John and Kathy Rueter

To Wayne's beloved family, on behalf of the Hambone Music Festival board of directors. We are shocked and extremely saddened by the passing of Wayne. Over the last three years, we all worked side-by-side with him twice a year for several days at the History Center. He was our festival's greatest advocate and a never-ending inspiration to all of us. Honest, open minded and positive, always willing listen and offer a kind word, and with an outstanding sense of humor, Wayne was the consummate "volunteer." He believed in us from the beginning and has helped to elevate our level of service to the community.

Ultimately however, it was clear that Wayne's family was always most important to him, along with his unwavering faith. Several of us were fortunate to meet his lovely wife Joleta, daughter Megan, son-in-law Jeremy, and grandsons when he brought them to our summer festival. Many sincere thanks to Joleta and all of Wayne's family for letting us "borrow" him on those weekends when he surely would have much preferred spending time with all of you. We are eternally grateful for his wisdom and having had the opportunity to work with him so closely. Wayne was a very special person, a dear friend, and will be missed tremendously by all of us. Our board of directors will most certainly honor his memory. Our deepest condolences to you during this difficult time.

Joleta and family,

We wish to express our sympathy regarding Wayne's death.  The sadness of losing a husband and father is deep and painful.  We pray God's presence will be evident to you, and that healing will come to each one.

(Note:  We are vacationing in Florida, but read the obituary in the Post Bulletin.)

Joleta and family,

My heart breaks for you as you have had to face this sudden loss of someone you love so much.  I know that pain, but don't have words to express the feelings  I feel for you. The one thing I do know is...... God will be faithful.

 I remember Wayne and along with all the Smith family as dear friends as I grew up. And you, Joleta, and your family were dear to us, also.

I want to send my sympathies to you as well as from my Mom, Lois.

Trusting God to hold you through this difficult time, Ann Gronewald

My years at the History Center with Wayne are truly memorable.  His passion and enthusiasm for all he loved is a lesson I will not soon forget.

Wayne's passing, so unexpected, so premature is beyond our comprehension.  May God support us all and may our fond memories of Wayne lessen our pain.

God Bless,

Joleta -

You and Wayne have been such kind and wonderful neighbors to have at our new home.  We are saddened by this sudden loss of a great man.  Wayne had a great smile and just seemed to have such a passion for life.    We will miss seeing Wayne on our nighttime walks and bike rides.  He is one of few people in today's world that everyone seems to love.  You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I and the Mechanical History Round Table of Rochester lost a close and dear friend. I remember the joy Wayne had in showing the pictorial booklet that he received from this grandchhildren. It showed many happy faces on tractors and items at the History Center. I feel privileged to have been asked to sign that book. Rest in peace dear friend.
