Roger Milton Hovland

The funeral for Roger M. Hovland will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00AM with Pastor Adam Koglin officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be Monday, June 19th at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Mr. Hovland, 92, a long time resident of Rochester, died on June 12, 2017 at Seasons Hospice.

Roger was born on September 5, 1924 in Saint Paul and attended school there, graduating from Edison High School in Minneapolis. He enlisted in the Air Force Cadet Program in 1943, received his Wings as a B-25 Pilot and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married June Peterson in 1948.

He was employed at Northwestern Bell and US West for 35 years and held numerous positions in management following his initial hire as a lineman. After retirement in 1981, he worked as a Manufacturer’s Representative for five years and as a Laborer for Christ for seven years building churches. Roger was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for over 60 years and held a number of offices over the years with primary interest in Evangelism and visitation.

Roger enjoyed fishing, golf, handball, running (25,000 plus miles) as well as square, old time, and ballroom dancing. He traveled in a trailer over 268,000 miles and spent 2147 nights throughout the continental US, Canada and Alaska. In addition to enjoying life with family and friends, his main interest was sharing Christ and God’s word with others. Bible study groups in numerous places around the United States and Canada were a big part of his life after God gave him the assurance of Salvation in 1973, Ephesians 1:13-14.

Survivors include three children, Diana (Craig) McHenry, Craig (Ruth) Hovland, and Jill Adams; with six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Seasons Hospice.

Condolences

The family of Roger Milton Hovland has received the following condolences.

Dear Diana, Craig, Jill and families,

My sympathy to all of you as you grieve the loss of your father and grandfather in your lives.  May you be held in the loving and comforting arms of our Creator.  You already know what a good man he was and no doubt you and your families will continue to share all that you remember about him.

As a next door neighbor to your mother and father for almost 10 years, I remember our conversations in the kitchen, living room, in the driveway and over the fence post. And most of all, I remember your father's zeal that all come to know Jesus Christ and that he played some darn good accordion after supper.  My parents, too, enjoyed it when Roger came out to their farm to play his accordion for them on their anniversary.

Your parents will continue to be with you in joy and love.  Peace to you all.

Memory is fading. NWB was 25 years ago. But I remember Roger. He was special, a gentle caring man, a man with a wry sense of humor, a family man. A man who cared personally for employees and for customers. He was special, a REALLY good man. God didn't make any better. His family can find solace in how many lives he affected. Some people make the world seem bigger and greener with them in it. The world is less without Roger in it.

Dear Diana, Craig and Jill,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families in deepest sympathy.  May the Holy Spirit comfort you all with the knowledge that your dad is well and strong again - gloriously alive with Our Lord!  With love in Christ, Sandy

Honored to have known you.   May thou rest in peace.   Thank you for the good memories.

So sorry to see this guy go to heaven. He was so strong. Threw all of this, never once did he complain. Loved him to the moon and back.

Diana,

We are so sorry for the loss of your dad. From what I have read, he was an amazing, faith filled man. We hope that treasured memories will comfort you. We'll keep you in our prayers.
