Robert Kohl Gluek

Bob Gluek, 85, passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure at his home in Mantorville on June 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Bob was born January 18, 1932, in Minneapolis to Eugene and Gertrude Gluek. The family moved to Hopkins and Bob attended Blake School. During high school he worked summers at the family business, Gluek Brewing Company, and played football and hockey well into his college years.

In 1950, he began studies for his business degree at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

In 1954, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Judy Cleveland, from Wayzata.  He then served in the United States Navy for two years before completing the final year of his five-year program for his MBA from Dartmouth. Bob and Judy lived in several places during their 63 years of marriage including California, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Illinois before ultimately moving to Rochester, Minnesota where they raised their seven children.

Most of Bob’s career was spent at the Mayo Clinic as a business administrator for various departments, the highlight being his work with the oncology department where he continued to volunteer after his retirement in January 1994 until a week before his death.

Bob had many passions throughout his life.  In his youth, Bob loved sailing and he spent numerous summers competing in Inner-Lake Yachting Association (ILYA) events. In the winters, he would spend his time on skis, and Bob and Judy took their family on many Rocky Mountain vacations.  Later, Bob became an experienced horseman who rode in dressage competitions (a passion also shared by his wife and children) and avidly embraced the game of golf.  Bob and Judy enjoyed spending time laughing and celebrating with their family and friends. In quiet times, you could find him reading or doing crossword puzzles at their cabin in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their seven adult children, Terry Gluek (Mark Milner), Carol (Bob) Petersen, Lisa Gluek (Jamer Kelley), Charlie (Jenny) Gluek, Sarah Gluek (Greg Smith), Karla Gluek (Jim Sorboro), and Gretchen (Rich) Del Bianco; 18 grandchildren and their spouses; 14 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John, his sister Jeanette, and their spouses, as well as his great-granddaughter, Morgan Wilke.

The funeral Mass for Bob Gluek will be 10:00 am on Monday, June 19, 2017, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester, MN with Rev. MSGR Gerald A. Mahon officiating. His burial will be at St. Margaret Cemetery, Mantorville, MN.  The visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 18, 2017 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Condolences

The family of Robert Kohl Gluek has received the following condolences.

Dear Judy, I'm sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I wish I heard of it earlier so I could have been more timely!

Bob will be missed dearly. He was one of the most accepting people on earth and I wish I had more of his qualities. I'm sure all the people in the Hayward

area feel the same. I'm sure life will be very different for you, but we still want to see you just the same. I'm hoping I get to see him again some day, but I'm probably going to have to do a better job here, for that to happen.  We know he will be in peace now and I promise before I come to see him I'll holler Foooour!

Best of luck to you and your family,

                                                                                   Bless You! Bob Washkuhn

Dear, Judy, our deepest sympathy to you and all your family on Bob's death. It must be incredibly difficult saying goodby to a life partner of so many years. But how much you both accomplished and enjoyed in your years together. We both enjoyed visiting with you in Horseshoe Bay and Marble Falls, TX.

We have made a donation to Mayo Cancer Research in Bob's name. God bless you all, Sharyn and Lee

Gluek Family-

My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you go through this loss. I know that your faith gives solace; however, the finality is never easy. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that he is with his Heavenly Father and will be there to greet each of you.

Sincerely,

Jennifer (Jacobson) Johnson

To all the Gluek Family: We send our sincere sympathy.  May Bob rest in the eternal light of Christ, and may you know God's peace that surpasses all human understanding.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob as one day he arrived at our home bearing a most beloved gift: a watercolor painting of our home 805 Park Terrace that was painted in 1939. He recounted the many hours of mirth that was shared in our dining room by German aunts who drank a bit too much Stites beer! We were so moved by his visit that we conducted research on the house and recently celebrated our homes 75th birthday (give or take a few years). We placed the painting prominently on our dining room table allowing neighbors and friends a chance to revel in all it's glory. We thank him for that eventful visit. We send our condolences to you, his beloved family~

The Orwoll family has many fond memories of skiing with the Bob and his family and treasure their friendship.  We are so sorry for the passing of Bob and are thinking about the family and wish to express our condolences.

Dear Glueks,

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing.  He was a great friend to our family.  He will be missed but always remembered fondly as a kind man, a great friend to many, and a cool dad!

The Wollner's will raise a glass in his honor tonight!

judy and family, I am so sorry to hear of Bob's death. What a fine man he was! I always appreciated his calm and wise counsel and his great sense of humor when we were colleagues at Mayo. Since retirement, it has been a joy to see the two of you live life so fully-dancing at Peavey Plaza, having fun with family... You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know you will cherish forever the countless good memories you have with this wonderful man you called husband, Dad, Grandpa...

I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Bob's passing. My heart and prayers go out to each of you. Love, Nancy

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful family man who always seem to enjoy living life to the fullest. Strong in his faith, I like to believe he is reunited with his family in heaven.  Cheers to Bob.

Mr. Gluek was such a friendly and warm person. I loved going out to their house to watch the Rose Bowl at their New Years parties, with so many kids running around Bob would be patiently smoking his pipe, enjoying a beer, and waiting for us kids to expend our seemingly endless supply of energy!!! Our trip on Amtrak to Bridger Bowl skiing on spring break, going to ours or their cabin in Northern Wisconsin. He was a good friend to so many of my friends' parents, and I really enjoyed running into him and Mrs. Gluek at U of Minnesota Gophers football and basketball games. Charlie, I'm sorry for your loss, your Dad was truly one of a kind. May he now watch over your whole family, resting peacefully in heaven, may God keep and bless you all during your time of mourning.

Condolences to the Gluek from the Kokesh family.
