Lois was born on April 18, 1924 to Walt and Helen Hanson, grew up in St. Paul, MN and graduated from Johnson High School in 1942.

Lois moved to Rochester and began working in the payroll department of Waters Conley.  Later she began a long career with the Mayo Clinic and retired as the Secretarial Supervisor for Administration in 1989.  Lois also worked preparing tax returns, initially with the Accounting Tax Service Company and later as an independent tax preparer.

In 1945 she married Mike Higgins of Rochester.  Together they had five boys.  Lois enjoyed family activities and together with Mike took their young family on numerous camping trips.  In 1991 she and Mike moved from Rochester to their cabin on Upper Hay Lake, where they enjoyed many beautiful years on the lake with family and friends.

Lois and Mike were founding members of the Resurrection Catholic Parish in Rochester.  They also helped found the Upper Hay Lake Association.  Lois served on the Whitefish Property Owners Association Board for several years.  Lois and Mike also initiated programs to improve water quality throughout the Brainerd lakes area.

Lois is survived by her five sons, Jay (Peggy) Higgins of Rochester, Tim (Judy) Higgins of Sun City, AZ, Jeff (Diane) Higgins of West St. Paul, MN, Matt (Mary Ann) Higgins of Lake Geneva, MN and Kevin (Nita) Higgins of Rochester; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Stankey, Brian Higgins, Christine Higgins, Amie Williams, Russ (Courtney) Higgins, Sean Higgins, Thomas Higgins, Patrick Higgins, Liam Higgins, Fionna Higgins and Brianne Higgins; 13 great grandchildren, Ashley Stankey, William Stankey, Mary Beth Higgins, Heather Higgins, Michael Higgins, Ben Higgins, Kristina Higgins, Andrew Higgins, Alex Williams, Irelynd Williams, Jacob Williams, Charlie Williams and Jace Higgins.  She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Chosen Valley Care Center or the Alzheimers Association.

Condolences

The family of Lois M. Higgins has received the following condolences.

I knew Lois in her later years at Mayo Clinic, and she was a very effective, respected member of the Mayo team. I remember with fondness the wonderful smile and greeting she would give to those of us who met her in the course of her busy work on Mayo 11.  I have talked with some of those hired by Lois in recent days, and they speak very fondly of her as well.  My thoughts and prayers are with the Higgins family on your loss.  I hope you are comforted by many positive memories of Lois.
