Jeannine Karnes

Jeannine Little Karnes, 86, of Rochester, died peacefully in her home on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Jeannine was born June 2, 1930 in Vacaville, CA, the daughter of John D. Little and May Barby Little. She was raised on her family’s cattle ranch in Beaver County, OK and later attended the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Music, graduating top of her class in 1952. There, she fell in love with, and married her husband of 65 years William “Bill” Ernest Karnes M.D.

Bill and Jeannine raised a family of four, as they lived in various places including Oklahoma, Hawaii, Boston, and California, before settling in Rochester in 1964.

As her children gained independence, Jeannine furthered her education, receiving a MS in Mathematics, and then working as a researcher with Dr. Peter Dyck in the Mayo Clinic Neuropathology lab. After retirement, she worked part-time at Ginny’s Fine Fabrics as a bookkeeper.

Jeannine loved gardening, cooking, sewing, reading, photography, music, wildlife, and adventure. She and Bill traveled throughout the world together, and shared their adventures with others through wonderful stories and photos. Jeannine remained very active in her community and church up to the moment of her passing.

Jeannine is survived by her husband, William Ernest Karnes M.D.; her children, William “Bill” Jr. (Rebecca), John (Julie), David “Bruce” (Debbie), Carol (Mick); eleven grandchildren; Alex, Kaytlin, Lesley, James, Jennifer, Christina, Christopher, Brian, Jack, Anne Marie and Layla; and one great-grandchild, Eleanor.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 1st in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home 4pm-7pm. A funeral will be at 11am on Friday at First Presbyterian, 512 3rd St SW Rochester, MN 55902 with a one hour visitation prior to the service and a luncheon to follow.

To the whole Karnes family and especially to John, Julie,, Anne Marie and Jack,

We are saddened to hear of Jeannine's passing.  She was a very special woman and someone to be so proud of.  She carried herself with grace.  She is now at peace in her final home.  You will all be with her again someday.  John, your Mother has raised you to be a beautiful person and we so love you.    Her traits will be carried on for generations.  I am sure Anne Marie and Jack carry some of those traits now.  It is a sad day for all of you today and she will be missed.  No words can ease the pain, but in time, good memories will come to the forefront of our mind.

With love,

Amy Kuehn and Dan Hahn

MY DEAREST BILL, BILL JR., JOHN, DAVID, AND CAROL,  OUR FAMILY IS SADDENED TO LEARN OF THE LOSS OF YOUR BELOVED JEANNINE.   I KNOW IN MY HEART SHE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.  WITH SYMPATHY AND LOVE FROM SO MANY YEARS AGO,  MARY KAPINOS, JOSEPHINE KAPINOS AND FAMILY

Although we did not have the honor of knowing Jeannine, we do know her son John. If his kind, gentle spirit, and brilliant mind are a reflection of Jeannine, she must have been an amazing woman.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the entire Karnes family and especially to John, Julie, Jack, and Anne Marie.

Jeannine was a good and faithful soul whose support of the church praised God and enhanced the community. I thank God for her life and pray God's Spirit will bring comfort with her memory.

Rev. Neal Lloyd

My sincere condolences to family and friends.  May you find comfort in your loving memories, and in God's promise to soon "swallow up death forever" and "wipe away the tears from all faces." (Isaiah 25;8) With deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers.
