Dr. Garrett, age 92, died Thursday, 16th April 2015, at Charter House, Rochester, Minnesota, following a long illness.

He was born on July 16, 1922 in Hanover, New Mexico, to Frank E. and Dolores M. (née Luna) Garrett. He received a masters degree in science (biology) from New Mexico A&M, leaving university for three years in order to do service as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in the Enewetak Atoll from February 1943 to February 1946; there he assisted in the post-war rebuilding of the Marshall Islands. He graduated in medicine from Creighton University in 1952 with support from the GI Bill; he completed his post-graduate education in ophthalmology at the University Hospital Cleveland and Moorefield’s Eye Hospital (London). He moved to Los Altos Hills, California, where he practiced ophthalmology at the Foothill Medical Center and the El Camino Hospital for 32 years, in addition to training junior ophthalmologists as an adjunct professor at Stanford University. He retired in 1989, and moved to Rochester, Minnesota, in 2000.

Throughout his life he had an avid interest in American (particularly Civil War) history. When not busy at work and raising a family he found the time for daily swimming, learning Spanish in Mexico, and participating in archeology excavations.

He was married to Dr. Ann Mary Jones on July 10, 1956 in St. Mary’s Church, Haddington Road, Dublin. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, his children Martha Ging (Christopher) of Busselton, Western Australia, Brendan Garrett (Binerva) of Palo Alto, California, Christopher Garrett of Houston, Texas, Anne Marie Kramlinger (Keith) of Rochester, Minnesota, and his six grandchildren Aisling Vennitti, Owen and Brian Ging, Andre and Fintan Garrett, and Isabel Kramlinger.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Mayo Clinic, Charter House, and Mayo Clinic Hospice, for the wonderful and empathetic care he received throughout his retirement in Minnesota.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Mayo Clinic Poverello Fund at St. Mary’s Hospital.
