Daniel Jewell Larsen, 68, of Rochester died Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Birchwood Cottages Memory Care in Owatonna, MN. Dan was born December 15, 1948 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN to Jewell and Delores Eastlick Larsen.

He graduated in Mayo High school’s first inaugural class of 1967. He joined the US Navy and served his country as a Boatswains Mate in Vietnam from 1967-1971. During his service, Dan served on three different ships, The USS Wrangell, The USS Salamonie, and the USS Milwaukee. He was a plank owner and had the distinguished honor of being selected to be an original crew member of the USS Milwaukee. On September 11, 1971, he married Kathleen A. Johnsen at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester. Dan graduated from the University of Wisconsin Superior with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1979. The couple have lived in Rochester ever since. Dan worked as a Foreman at AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Inc) for more than 42 years.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Larsen; three sisters, Becky (Nick) Larsen-Carter of Rochester, Bonnie (Ronald) Hickok of Rochester, Marsha (Wayne) Krull of Thomas OK; four children, Michael (Mijon) Larsen of Rochester, Amy (Joseph) Tijerina of Rochester, Janel (Bryan) Winters of St.Michael, MN, and John Larsen of St.Paul, MN; ten grandchildren, Eryn Larsen, Makenzi Tijerina, Keera Tijerina, Jewell Larsen, Allen Winters, Adin Tijerina, Nicholas Larsen, Victoria Winters, Paige Winters and Alyvia Larsen.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and father-in-law.

Dan loved reading and working with his hands from drawing and painting to just fixing things around the house. He was an avid sports fan and a history buff. Dan enjoyed camping, card games, playing horseshoes, going up North to the cabin, and fishing with grandkids.

Dan’s true passion was spending time with his family and friends. He loved to tell stories and jokes. Dan always kept everyone laughing and having a good time. He is sorely missed amongst family and friends.

Special thanks to the caregivers at Birchwood Cottages in Owatonna, MN and St. Croix Hospice for their loving care of Dan during his final years of life.

To Danny's family, I am so sorry I could not be there for the funeral, we are up north.  Danny was a great friend when I grew up in Golden Hill, in the good old days, met up with him again when he got together with Kathy.  She was a good friend too, The world is a bit darker without Danny.  His family, Jewell and Dee, always treated me as one of the family.  I am sorry that I didn't even know he was ill, but I will ALWAYS remember him as if we were still kids paling baseball of sliding on the hill at Golden Hill.  God bless him and his family.

Dear Kathy,

i am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing.  My deepest sympathy to you and your family.  You and Dan made a perfect pair.  He was a great guy.  Jerry and I are in North Carolina visiting our son Brandon and his family so we won't be able to come to the service.  Please know that I will be thinking of you and sending prayers.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Dan Larsen. I was blessed to grow up so close to my Larsen cousins in Rochester. Never a dull moment , many happy times playing baseball, telling ghost stories, playing tag, hide and seek etc. I remember Dan going off to the Navy and how it affected the family. Thanks for your service to our country Dan. Danny will be warmly remembered for his great sense of humor and generous, caring heart. He and Kathy had the best marriage and inspired many. Sending hugs and kisses from California. Wish we could be at the service. Keeping you all in prayer.

Love. Nancy and Larry

To the Larsen family,

My deepest thoughts and prayers go to you all. Dan was a wonderful father and friend. I so enjoyed sharing my time with all of you when I would go up to your cabin with Harry and Evangeline. He was always a kind person and didn't hesitate to share his help to anyone and laughter to all. I remember when my mom passed away in 2008 Dan and Kathy came to console me with her loss. May you always treasure the moments he was here with us and put a smile on your face.

God bless you,

Rebecca Curtis

Dan was a wonderful person as I remembered him, when I was married to Kathy's brother Donny Johnsen. Kathy and Dan were god parents to my son Teddy Johnsen. We had wonderful memories that I will hold deep in my heart. Dan was always there to help and always had a great sense of humor! No more suffering, follow the rainbow to heaven. God bless you and keep you safe in his kingdom.

I was so saddened to read of Dans death. Sending thoughts and prayers for you in the coming days.
