Barbara L. Schliep

Barbara Lynn Schliep, 77, passed away peacefully on September 18th, 2015 at her home in Rochester.

Barb was born in Minneapolis, MN on June 9th, 1938 to Francis X and Cecily K Helgesen.  She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Jerry P Schliep.

Barb spent her first two years of college at the College of St Benedict in Collegeville, MN.  There she met Jerry (attending St. Johns University) at the local ski hill.  After Jerry graduated in 1958 they moved to Minneapolis.  Barb completed her B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of MN.

Jerry and Barb were working in Minneapolis (he managing a golf course and ski area; and she working as a 2nd grade teacher) when they decided to follow their passion and open a ski shop.  They moved their young family down to Rochester, MN in 1965 and opened Tyrol Ski & Sports that fall.  They operated and grew the business until 2003 when they sold it to their daughter and son-in–law. Many give them credit for introducing skiing and winter recreation to the area.

Barb was a sweet and loving person toward everyone she came in contact with; a wonderful wife, mother, sister and friend.  She had an open, vibrant, intelligent personality. Barb had a sense of adventure that took her and Jerry on many wonderful trips, including hiking in the Austrian Alps, bike touring in Tuscany and river rafting in Idaho.  The family has many fond memories of time together at their cabin near Grand Marais, MN and condo in Steamboat Springs, CO.  She enjoyed her many friendships made through tennis, swimming, book group and bridge.  Barb was a devoted Catholic.

Besides her husband Jerry, Barb is survived by her sister Stephanie Helgesen and brother Tim Helgesen (Jean), as well as three children:  Kristin Welch (Robb) of Rochester, Monica Schliep (Carrie Framsted) of Minneapolis, and Karen Schliep (Alan McEwan) of Bethesda, MD; and also by three grandchildren:  Monica Ruth, Alyson and Eric.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 12:30 PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 5455 50th Ave. NW, Rochester, MN. with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

The family offers heartfelt thanks to all of her caregivers, and especially to Jeanne Schuld who cared for mom with love and respect for 4 years.  In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Barbara may be made to Mayo Clinic Hospice.

Condolences

The family of Barbara L. Schliep has received the following condolences.

I am remembering you in prayer during this difficult time.

Fr. Michael Cronin

Lourdes High School Class of 1984

My deepest sympathy to all the family of Barb.  We were classmates at the College of St. Benedict, graduating in 1960.  Barb was always a joy!  She was kind, happy, and positive; her smile always lit up a room!  I treasure the memories I have of the times we spent together.  May she intercede for us as she begins eternity in the arms of Jesus.

Dear Jerry,  your daughters and their families.

Frank & I send our sympathies to you all, as you adjust to the 'new normal' of not having Barb close to you.  We delight in the memories of the great times that we shared as couples involved in the ski industry.  Trade shows , Clinics, and special events at Trollhaugen and Telemark. Barb was a wonderful partner, parent & friend.  We all will miss her.   Frank & Linda Rorvick.

Jerry, the Neustel family is sad  to hear of Barbs passing. My Dad is aware and sends his love.  We miss coming to Pike Lake and seeing you each summer.  You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please stop in to the Ski Hut and say hi when you are coming through Duluth. With love,  Scott, Kathleen and Wes Neustel.

Karen and all of the Schlieps,

I send my heartfelt condolences to you.  Your mom was such a spunky, fun woman who was really an inspiration to others (especially young girls!) in the way that she embraced new challenges and adventures.  Wishing you comfort and peace as you say good bye.

Lots of love to you,

-Mickey

Dear Jerry,

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Barb was such a sweet and wonderful lady. She is leaving a beautiful legacy. I loved my time working for you and Barb at Tyrol. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Melissa (Abnet) Hansen

Dear Jerry and family our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. So many years and so much fun to think back on the times together through the years as our children were growing and we were sharing common interests. In later years it was encounters at the Ordway as opposed to the ski hills but still enjoyable. Peace to you all.

Jerry, Kristin and Family, we are so sorry for the loss of your loved one Barbara. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Unfortunately Johnny and I we have both previous commitments on Tuesday and won't be able to attend the Funeral. God bless, Moni and Johnny

Dear Jerry, Kristin, Monica, Karen, and all of Barb's loved ones,

I offer my heartfelt condolences for your great loss. The opportunities, joy, and sense of caring Barb gave to the Rochester community through Tyrol Ski & Sports is immeasurable. I am one of many who woke up in the dark and cold Minnesota winter mornings, beyond excited to don my ski clothes and board the Tyrol Ski School bus; loved to wander into the ski shop to see the latest ski fashions back in the day; and witnessed her steadfast love for her girls and Jerry. Thank you Barb for all you gave to the children of Rochester and too every one who walked through Tyrol's doors. Your many kindnesses to me will never be forgotten.

With deepest sympathy,

Monica Gowan

May you find peace and joy in your new journey. My condolences to those who are left behind.
