Allen B. Benson

Allen B. Benson of Rochester, MN died Tuesday, May 16, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille; two sons, Glenn (Laurie, son Tom) and Eric (Eileen); two daughters, Luann and Norma (Ian) McNicol; and one grandson, Alfie McNicol.

Born in Chicago in 1930 to Alf and Agnes Benson, they later moved to a farm near Litchville ND, where Allen was raised through high school. While in the National Guard, Allen was activated during the Korean war, and served as an Air Force radio operator at Grenier Air Force Base in Manchester, NH, where he met his wife Lucille. In 1952, he was transferred to Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, GA, and under the GI bill, he earned a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Upon graduating, he started his career at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1964, he transferred to IBM in Rochester, where he retired in 1993.

Each summer, Allen enjoyed returning to North Dakota to help during harvest on his father’s farm. He also enjoyed maintaining vegetable gardens on his own land. He took pleasure in wood and electrical work. Allen was an avid HAM radio operator communicating with fellow operators throughout the country. At IBM, he had great success inventing innovative computer components.

There will be no visitation hours as a private funeral service is planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army or a charity of choice.

Condolences

The family of Allen B. Benson has received the following condolences.

Dear Lucille,

I hope that you are finding strength, after Allen's passing.  When I visited you and Allen many years ago, with Eileen and Eric, I found Allen to be a gentle, warm, lovely man.  He definitely had a spark in his eye.  And he had a great capacity to listen.  Also he was never one to judge.  Such a gentleman!  I have lovely memories of him.  And I hope you are OK, during this transitional period.  Because I know that would be very important to him.

Lots of Love,

David Galvin.

My sympathies to the all the immediate family members who loved and enjoyed Allen over the years.  May they also be at peace.

Laurie

Lucille,

Our prayers are with you. Al and I knew each other in Poughkeepsie and then worked on the same project in Rochester. Quite a man with an even keel.

My condolences to Al's family. Al Benson was a great guy. I knew Al mainly because he was the best manager I ever had while working for IBM. He always supported me, and I will never forget.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, how wonderful your family is all together at this time. Please let us know if there is anything you need!

Pat & Greg

To Lucille and all the family.

Our deepest condolences on the sad passing of Allen.

We had the pleasure on several occasions on our visits to the US to be in Allen's company and always found him to be very interesting and hospitable.

We will continue to pray that the whole family find the strength to get through this difficult time.

Seamus, Loretta, Niall and James

Glenn;

Very sorry to hear this. Hope you're doing OK.
