Shawn Elizabeth Edmundson

Shawn Edmundson, 51 years old, of Arlington Heights, IL, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at her home after a short battle with cancer.

Born in 1960 in Luverne, MN to Arlen and Mary Edmundson, she is the second of six children in her family.  Shawn grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin and graduated from Marinette High School in Wisconsin.  She received her B.A. in Accounting at UW Madison.

Throughout her 28-year career at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Shawn was an example of excellence in public service and was determined to make a contribution to the mission of the FDIC.  A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Shawn began her career with the FDIC in August of 1983 in the area of bank supervision, holding several positions including that of Bank Examiner, Supervisory Examiner in the Chicago North Field Office, Acting Field Supervisor in the Seattle, Washington Field Office, and Field Supervisor in the Des Moines, Iowa Field Office. She participated in a wide variety of special assignments and projects within the FDIC including lead instructor for the Financial Institution Analysis School and Project Manager for the Diversity Steering Committee.  In 2006, Shawn became the first Director of the Corporate Employee Program (CEP) where she played a pivotal role in the creation and administration of the CEP program and is credited with its continued success.  Shawn also served on Capitol Hill as a participant in The Brookings Institution’s prestigious LEGIS Fellows Program working with Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin.  Most recently, Shawn’s many talents were brought to bear helping the FDIC’s Division of Receiverships and Resolutions respond to the demands of this financial crisis as Lead Manager of Investigations at the Midwest Temporary Satellite Office, located in Schaumburg, Illinois.   Shawn contributed greatly to making the FDIC a preferred place to work, sharing her knowledge and treating people fairly and with respect.   Shawn was a leader whose collaborative approach, strength of character, and sense of purpose will have a lasting impact on the FDIC.

She was very passionate for her work.  She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world, antiques, and treasured spending time with her partner, family and friends.

Shawn is survived by her partner of over 20 years, Philene Soppa of Arlington Heights, IL; her parents Arlen and Mary Edmundson of Gilbert, AZ; brother Alan (Julie) Edmundson of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; sister Dawn (Tom) Queen of Chandler, AZ; sister Terri (Keven) Schmidt of Madison, WI; brother Dean (Cheryl) Edmundson of Littleton, CO; sister Mali (Jason) Wilhelm of Phoenix, AZ; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents Dean and Alta Jorgenson and Art and Mabel Edmundson.

A memorial service celebrating Shawn’s life will be held at 3:30pm on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the new River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. (1119 11 ½ St. S.E., Rochester, MN 55904)  Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, prior to Saturday, July 30th services, at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home.

Richard “Dick” Frank Spaniol

Richard “Dick” Spaniol

Dick, 90, of Rochester, Minn., died peacefully Sunday, July 24th 2011 at Madonna Towers Skilled Care Unit surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on October 17, 1920 to George and Mary Spaniol.  He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1938.  On June 29, 1942, Dick was drafted into the Army serving during WWII.  He married Margaret ‘Babe’ Skumautz on April 25th, 1944 in St. Cloud prior to his deployment to Europe as a Technical Sergeant in the 358th Field Artillery Battalion.

Dick attended Dunwoody Technical School in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He worked for IBM 37 years as an Electrical Engineer, starting in St. Paul and then moving to Rochester in 1957.  After retirement in 1984, Dick volunteered as a tax preparer and instructor for the AARP Tax-Aide Program for 26 years.

Dick was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, a 3rd degree Knight and life member of the Knights of Columbus for 55 years.  He was a member of the Elks and American Legion.  On April 3rd, 2010 he went on the Veteran’s Honor Flight to observe the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Dick leaves behind a beautiful family legacy, including his wife Babe; a daughter, Toni Deters of Rochester; a son, Philip (Cathy) of Katy, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Spaniol of Eyota; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.  He is survived by his two sisters, Geneva Boerger of St. Cloud, MN and “Bunny” (Clay) Hartman of Moose Lake, MN.  He was preceded in death by his son, Rick in 2005, two brothers and one sister.

Memorials are preferred to Madonna Towers Skilled Care Unit.

The Memorial Mass for Dick will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, July 28, 2011 at St. Pius X Catholic Church of Rochester, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.  Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date.  Military rights will be held by the American Legion Post 92 following the service at the church.  Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 27th 2011 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM on Thursday at the church.

Mary A. Schenewerk

Mary Ann Schenewerk, retired Registered Nurse, age 100, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

“Dancing Mary”, as she was well known to many in the area, was born March 24, 1911 in Lincoln, Wisconsin to Louis J. and Anna M. (Slaby) Kulig.  She grew up in Independence, Wisconsin, graduated from Independence High School, and from St. Francis School of Nursing, La Crosse, Wisconsin.  She married William Schenewerk and lived for a time in Washington State; they later divorced.  Mary was a private duty nurse with St. Marys Hospital in Rochester from 1933-1938 and then from 1946 until she retired in 1981.  Her retirement activities included hobbies of dancing and playing cards.  She belonged to Polka Club of America, and the US Amateur Ballroom Dancers’ Association.

During her career at St. Marys Hospital, Mary cared for patients from across the US and Canada and around the world, many of whom stayed in contact with her long after she completed her care for them.

Surviving are daughters Sandra (Lawrence) Tholen, Wichita, KS, and Mary Lou (Michael) McMorrow, Arlington, VA; grandchildren Lynne Tholen, Karen (Tim) Burnett, Lisa Tholen, Daniel Tholen, Mary Alice (Charles) Ball, Megan (Barry) Reicherter, Maureen (John) Bett, Myles McMorrow, 13 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is a brother Alphonse (Ginny) Kulig, and a sister-in-law Delores (Mrs. Bernard) Kulig.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Aloysius Kulig, Bernard Kulig, sisters Sister Mary Euphrosine Kulig, Theresa Kulig Bautch, foster brother Edward Kulig, and granddaughter Laurie Tholen Takes.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church with Rev. John Lasuba officiating.  Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Independence, Wisconsin.

Friends may call from 5:00-7:00PM in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home  on Monday, July 25 and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Eileen T. Bingham

Eileen T. Bingham, age 82, died peacefully on July 23rd, 2011 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield surrounded by her loving family.

Eileen was born on September 3, 1928 to Carl and Cora Jensen. She spent her childhood in Byron, MN where her parents operated a Hardware store.

She met and married Perry Bingham in 1945.  The couple made their home in SE Rochester.  Eileen was a stay-at-home mother to their four children.  Perry worked at Rochester Ready Mix until his death in 1976.

Eileen eventually worked as a church secretary for Homestead United Methodist Church.

She moved to Chatfield, MN in 1990 to be closer to her daughters.  After retirement, Eileen remained busy with numerous hobbies.  She enjoyed sketching, painting, quilting and croqueting.  Her extended family has been blessed with innumerable handmade items to treasure in their homes.

In recent years she would open ‘Grandma’s Boutique’ prior to Christmas.  Family members had the opportunity to “shop” her handmade crafts to select personal items to treasure.

Amongst her 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, Eileen was fondly referred to as Grandma, Nanny B or Grandma Bingo.  She loved to hear the children sing her favorite song “You are my Sunshine”.

Eileen loved various types of music.  Even in the hours preceded her death she was still tapping along with the musical beat and singing.

Eileen is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Roy) Lange of Chatfield; son, Dennis (Linda) Bingham of Rochester and daughter, Wendy (Gene) Meadows of Jacksonville Beach, FL.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Perry Bingham; daughter, Carole Neis and son-in-law Eugene Neis and a brother, Gordon Jensen.

Eileen’s sense of humor, friendly smile and warm embraces will be greatly missed by her family.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Homestead United Methodist Church in Rochester with the Rev. Becky Jo Thilges officiating.  Friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00am at the church.  Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Phyllis Elaine Brackenbury

The graveside service for Phyllis Elaine Rathbun Brackenbury will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday July 22, 2011 at Grandview Memorial Garden Cemetery in Rochester with Rev. Michael  Wuehler officiating.

Mrs. Brackenbury, 79, of Rochester, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

Phyllis was born September 16, 1931 in Spring Valley, MN. to Wilbur and Hazel Lenz Rathbun. She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1949. She started work at 1st National Bank Rochester on June 4, 1949. August 8, 1959 she married Fergus “Bud” Brackenbury. Bud died August 27, 2003. Bud retired from Clements Chevrolet, and Mrs. Brackenbury retired July 1, 1993 as a personal banker at 1st Bank of Rochester.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She served in different areas and was a member of the Business & Professional Women and the National Association of Banking Women. She also served on the Salvation Army board for 9 Years.

She is survived by 2 sisters; Lucille Kimball and Evelyn Rathbun both of Rochester and 2 brothers; Jerry (Janet) Rathbun and Vic (Eileen) Rathbun both of Spring Valley, MN;  step-daughter,  Diana  ( John) Madden of Arkansas, 2 step grandchildren, 3 step great grand children, 2 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a nephew.

Memorial are preferred to Mayo Foundation Center for Cancer Diabetes & Leukemia Research.

Delores Mary Ryan

Delores M. Ryan 83 of Rochester, retired Mayo Clinic Employee and long time Rochester resident, died Tuesday July 19th, 2011 at Season’s Hospice with her family at her side.

Delores Mary Majerus was born January 24th, 1928 in Rochester to Lawrence and Bertha (Redding) Majerus.  She attended rural Rochester area schools and graduated in 1946 from Plainview high school.  On November 26, 1946 she married Stanley B. Ryan, Delores and Stan made their home in Rochester where they raised their six children.

Delores was a long time member of The Church of the Resurrection, Catholic church.  She was a unit superviosor in x-ray records at the Mayo Clinic, retiring in 1993.  Delores  enjoyed gardening, fishing, trips to the casino with friends and spending time with her family.  She was a wonderful cook and hosted a family dinner every Monday night where friends were always welcomed.

Survivors include, Mike (Patty) of Stewartville, MN, James (Gaylene), Daniel (Margret), and Tom (Jill) of Rochester:  one daughter Patricia (Larry) Viker of Zumbro Falls, and her son-in-law Larry Johnson of Champlin, MN:  nine grandchildren, Aaron, Cole, and Josh Johnson, Jason (Michelle), Jonathan (Angie), David, Melissa, Jennifer (Lance Diderrich), Sarah:  one great grandson Logan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, two sisters and one brother, and her daughter Linda Johnson.

The Memorial Mass for Delores Ryan will be at 11:00 AM Friday, July 22, 2011 at The Church of the Resurrection with the Rev. Kevin Connolly offiating.  Friends and family may visit from 5:00PM to 8:00PM Thursday, July 21, 2011 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Aaron, Cole, Josh, Jason, Jonathan, David, Melissa, Jennifer, and Sarah, her great grandson Logan, Lance Diderrich, and close family friend Dale Hall.

Brian Shandley

Brian James Shandley, 24, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Saint Mary’s Hospital from injuries sustained in a tragic accident.

Brian was born September 27, 1986 to TJ and Deb (Kamradt) Shandley in Rochester, MN. He graduated from Mayo High School in 2005, and then furthered his education by attending RCTC where he received an honors degree in Associate and Applied Science; Building Utilities Mechanic. He began his career at Saint Mary’s hospital as a Dispatcher in Maintenance in 2007. With his hard work and drive, he received his dream job as an Assistant Operator at the Saint Mary’s hospital power plant in November of 2010.

Brian loved spending time with family and friends. He had a smile that lit up a room and people always wanted to be around him. He was an adventurous person who enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed trips to the Shedabin in northern Wisconsin and also his grandparent’s family cabin in Spirit Lake, IA where many great memories were made by all.

Brian is survived by his parents, TJ and Deb Shandley; Beth Timm, significant other and buddy’s soul-mate; his sisters, Nicole & Sarah Shandley of Rochester, MN. His maternal grandparents, Richard and Karen Kamradt, Archer, IA; his paternal grandmother, Julie Shandley, Rochester, MN. Maternal aunt Dawn(Doug) Biedenfeld, Peterson, IA; Sheila (John) Tatman, Spencer , IA; Brad(Angie) Kamradt, Sanborn, IA. Paternal aunt, Jamey(Jeff) Shandley, Rochester, MN; Richard Shandley, Rochester, MN; Melissa Shandley, Divide, CO; Hilary(Denny) Becker, Colorado Springs, CO. Cousins Tayler, Chance, Dustin, Jenna, Payton, Travis and Ryan. Brian was preceded in death by his maternal uncle, Steve Kamradt, his paternal cousin, Drew Hewitt, and his paternal grandfather Richard Shandley.

He was known as a caring and giving person and even in death, his giving continues as his donation of tissue and organs will live on in Wisconsin and North Dakota.

The visitation will be Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from 5pm-9pm in the River Park Chapel at Macken funeral Home with a prayer service at 8:30pm. The funeral service is at the Church of the Resurrection on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11am with the Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be distributed to various organizations to be determined by the family at a later date.

Jon C. Sivly

The memorial Mass for Jon C. Sivly will be held Thursday, July 21st, 2011 at 11:00 am at St. Francis Catholic Church, 338 11th Ave. SE, Rochester with Rev. Mark C. McNea officating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at St. Francis Catholic Church.  There will also be a celebration of Jon’s life on Saturday, July 23rd from 1:00-4:00pm at the Elks Lodge located at 1652 Highway 52 N, Rochester, MN 55901. Please bring your favorite memory or story to share.

Jon C. Sivly died on July 15th, 2011 surrounded by his family. Jon was born in Rochester, MN on June 21st, 1944 at St. Mary’s hospital to John and Roslyn Sivly. He grew up in Rochester and graduated in 1962 from John Marshall High School where he was captain and a star of his basketball team. He also went to Rochester Junior College. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Pamalia Breault; they were united in marriage on June 19th, 1965 at St. Pius Church in Rochester.  Jon began work at St. Mary’s hospital and later joined the Mayo Clinic where he worked for 42 years. He also served in the United States Army Reserve as a Staff Sergeant. Throughout his life, Jon thrived in sports from basketball, softball, broomball, bowling, snowmobiling, and racing motorcycles and cars. Jon was born to ride since he was 14 years old. He owned and rode various motorcycles including a 1972 BMW and his 2000 Honda Goldwing where he and his wife spent many miles enjoying the scene and life on the road. They especially enjoyed the Sturgis Bike Rally for the past 15 years and were known to stay in Dead Wood, South Dakota where they were well known and met many friends. He is a life-time member of the Elks Club where he enjoyed playing pool and socializing with everyone. He was also a member of the Ronald McDonald Cruise Committee for four years where he was passionate in raising funds for kids and their families.

Jon is survived by his wife Pamalia, his oldest son John, his twin daughters SeAnn and Shawn of Seattle, his youngest son Shad (Angela) Sivly, and his twin granddaughters, Camryn and Caitlyn Sivly. He was preceded in death by his parents and triplet granddaughters.

Jon will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His sense of humor, connecting with people and willingness to always help others will continue to live through his spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Ronald McDonald House.

Michael John Arend

Michael John Arend peacefully passed away at his home in Rochester, Minnesota on Friday, July 8, 2011.  He was born on December 7, 1951, in Rochester, Minnesota, the second son of Ray J. Arend and Mary T. (Schaefer) Arend.  He attended St. John’s Elementary School in Rochester, St. John’s   Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minnesota, and graduated from Mayo High School in 1969.   Mike graduated in 1974 from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture.

In 1978, Mike began A & A Landscaping Company in Rochester with long-time friend Bob Abolt.  Mike left indelible evidence of his talent and hard work all over Rochester; planting trees and flowers that flourish today at many familiar Rochester sites including Madonna Towers and High Point Condominium.

Mike and Kristy Ellen Juergens (Arend) of Rochester were married from August 30, 1980 until 2000.  Their two wonderful children are Andrew Ray Arend and Kayla Marie Arend, also of Rochester.

Mike was known for his sense of humor, sharp wit, infallible mechanical abilities, curiosity and intelligence.

Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1993 commenced a tragic struggle from which he is now released.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ray J. and Mary T. Arend.  He is survived by his brother Richard R. Arend (Carol) of Rochester, his beloved children and their mother, Kristy.

Friends may visit with the family an hour before Mike’s memorial service at 2 PM on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St SE, Rochester.

A private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.  Those who wish may honor Mike’s memory with a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for innovative Parkinson’s research.

Mary Barden Cleary

Mary Barden Cleary, age 95 of Rochester, passed away on July 9, 2011. She was a 12 year resident of Madonna Towers in Rochester. Mary Barden was born on February 3, 1916 in Waseca County to Ambrose and Margaret Barden. Following High School she attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona graduating with a degree in social service. In 1950, she moved to Cleveland, OH and began in her career in social work. On December 29, 1973, she married John J. “Jack” Cleary in Waseca, MN at Sacred Heart Church.  In 1979, Mary retired. Mary had a deep love for children, and although she did not have children of her own, she considered the many children she had contact with during her work in Children’s Services her own. She is survived by sisters, Peggy Ward of Minneapolis, and Martha Myszka of St. Paul, a sister-in-law Mary Barden, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Cleary, and three brothers: Vince, Dick and Jerome.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Madonna Towers Chapel with Father James Russell officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Madonna Towers.  Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, OH. Memorials are preferred to Madonna Towers.
