Gerald “Jerry” Charles Molloy

Gerald “Jerry” Charles Molloy, 70, of Rochester, MN passed away peacefully Saturday, January 22, 2011, at his home.

Jerry was born November 11, 1940 in Emmetsburg, Iowa to parents Joseph and Theresa (Drew) Molloy.  His mother was driven to the hospital by snowplow to welcome his birth during the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940—he has weathered many storms since that wonderful day he joined his loving family.  During his early years, he enjoyed growing up on “the farm” in Emmetsburg, IA—oh, the stories those Molloy boys can tell!

Jerry graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in 1958 and attended the DeVry Institute of Chicago from 1959 to 1961.  From 1961 to 1963, he worked at General Dynamics Astronautics in San Diego, CA.  Jerry joined the United States Army on October 16, 1963 and was stationed in Taecchon-Ni, Camp Holiday Korea, for most of his service duration.  He was assigned to the Nike AJAX and Hercules Ordnance Support Unit, 30th Ordnance Detachment.  He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1965.  Upon his return from the service, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree in June of 1969.  Jerry became a dedicated IBM Corporation employee in June of 1969 and retired 33 years later in July of 2002.  Jerry remembered his IBM career with respect and admiration and continued to maintain the friendships he developed with many colleagues throughout his years of service.

Life on the farm was a wonderful adventure for Jerry and his nine (9) siblings—four (4) brothers and five (5) sisters.  The family includes siblings William (Patricia) Molloy of Santa Barbara, CA; Robert (Ruth) Molloy of Belvidere, IL; Katherine (Anthony) Catalano of Atkinson, NH; Ruth (Max) Norvell of Sioux City, IA; Janet (David) Brown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Joseph (Ruth) Molloy of Alexandria, MN; Joann (Rick) Boylan of Des Moines, IA; and Michael (Beth) Molloy of Minneapolis, MN.  Helen (Tom) Van Oosbree of Madison, WI preceded Jerry in death.

Jerry married Rose Ann (Bartosh) Molloy in Emmetsburg, IA on August 26, 1968.  Rose Ann passed away on July 8, 2005 of pancreatic cancer.  Jerry is survived by his wife Susan (Steinbach) Molloy whom he married in Rochester, MN on October 10, 2008.

Jerry’s children are John (Julie) Molloy of Eagan, MN; Colette Molloy (husband Fernando Cerda) of Chicago, IL; Janna (Mark) Ellingson of Rochester, MN; Benjamin Molloy of Rochester who is engaged to marry Tara Bianchi of Zumbrota, MN; and his step-children are Christine (Michael) Boyer of Rochester, MN; and Darik (Tara) Steinbach of Minnetrista, MN.

The light of Jerry’s life would be his grandchildren:  Olivia Molloy of Eagan; Nora, Michael, and William Ellingson of Rochester, MN; Andres Cerda of Chicago, IL; and his step-grandchildren Zachary, Sydney, Melanie, and Jon Boyer of Rochester, MN.

Jerry is also survived by Susan’s mother, Lorraine Eker; 31 loving nieces and nephews; and 32 great nieces and nephews.  Nephew, Matt Norvell, preceded Jerry in death.  Also preceding Jerry in death were his parents; mother and father-in-law, Alice and Hank Bartosh; and brothers-in-law Richard and William Bartosh, all of Emmetsburg, IA.

Jerry was an inspiration to anyone who knew him.  He fought a brave battle against colon cancer for the past eighteen (18) months.  His caring and loving heart was always open to those in need.  He volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Lourdes High School, and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he was a long-time member.  The Irish twinkle in his eye brought warmth and love to all.

Especially important to Jerry were his faith, family and extended family, friends throughout the United States, and his Irish heritage.  He also cherished his fishing trips to Leech Lake, MN with his friends the “Veggie Boys” and family, as well as the yearly family reunion trips to Lake Okoboji, IA—a tradition since early childhood.  Jerry’s handyman and woodworking talents are second to none—he has produced many wonderful pieces of furniture for his family to treasure.  Who could forget Jerry’s sweet tooth and his LOVE for cookies, pies, cake, and ice cream.  Jerry will be immensely missed, but his spirit will linger forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be at River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1119 11 1/2th St SE Rochester, MN, on Sunday, January 30, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. (with a time of remembrances at 4:30 p.m.) and one half hour prior to the service on Monday.  A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11 Fourth Avenue SW, Rochester, MN 55902 on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev.
