Julia E. Boynton Jones

The funeral service for Julia Eleanor Boynton Jones will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating.

Mrs. Jones, 80, of Rochester, died Saturday (February 27) at the Homestead in Rochester after a long illness.  She was born July 10, 1929, in Milwaukee, WI.  Her former places of residence include: Oconomowoc, WI; St. Louis, MO; and Milwaukee, WI.  Julia married Dumont Louis Jones in 1951.  She was a homemaker and she enjoyed gardening and summer trips to Evergreen Lodge in Vilas County, WI.

Survivors include three sons, Christopher (April) Jones of Rochester, MN; Philip (Courtney) Deines-Jones of Silver Spring, MD; and Dumont (Joan Muellerleile) Jones of Columbus, OH.  Other survivors include four grandchildren, Carolyn, Belisario, Stefan, and Ari Jones.  Julia was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Chester Boynton.

Friends may call starting at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church.

Eleanor R. Kelly

Eleanor Rose Kelly, 92 of Rochester, died Thursday (February 25, 2010) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.  A memorial  Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday March 1, 2010 at Saint John The Evangelist Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating.

Eleanor was born September 23, 1917, in Los Angeles, California to Lewis O. and Edith Wheeler. She attended Los Angeles High School and Immaculate Heart College both in Los Angeles.   On September 6, 1941, she married Clinton J. Kelly at Cathedral Chapel Catholic Church in Los Angeles.  They were married for 59 years until the death of Mr. Kelly on August 26, 2000.

Mrs. Kelly lived her entire life in Southern California until she moved to Charter House  in 2004. She was a devoted wife and mother and was active in numerous civic and church organizations in the Los Angeles area.  She and her husband enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending lots of time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons James C. (Susan) of Rochester and Tom Kelly of El Dorado Hills, CA., and one daughter Suzanne (Jerry) Bacot of Plano, Texas. She leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

A memorial service will be held in Laguna Hills, Ca at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Mark Catholic School Education Trust Fund in Plano, Texas or to the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester.

J. Michael Alcorn

J. Michael (Mike) Alcorn, 61, of Rochester passed away on Tuesday, February 23 after a long battle with cancer, at home with his family around him.

Mike was born on June 11, 1948, in Minneapolis to Dr. William and Lois (Bonnie) Alcorn.  When he was one year of age the family moved to Wabasso, MN.  He attended Wabasso High School where he participated in music, baseball and football graduating in 1966.  He also participated in the local 4-H program.   Mike did his x-ray training at HCMC.

Mike met his bride of 35 years, Jeaneen, working at North Memorial Hospital as a X-ray technician and they married on February 8, 1975 in Roseville, MN.  They made their home in Rochester their entire married life.  Mike worked at Mayo Clinic in several different positions in the radiology department for more than 35 years, his last position was in the MRI section.   Mike also served on the admissions board at the Mayo Clinic Radiography School.  Mike and Jeaneen enjoyed volunteering with Special Olympics and Dorothy Day House.  Mike enjoyed music, fishing, woodworking, and especially the activities of his children.  He was a member of the Rochester Male Chorus as well as the church choir and Civic Music.  He thoroughly enjoyed his fishing trips with his good friends and family, being at his lake cabin, and spending time with his best friend Jeaneen .

Mike is survived by his wife, Jeaneen of Rochester; two daughters, Annika (Shawn) Curren of Charlotte, NC and Krista Alcorn of Rochester; one son, James “Bud” (Meghan) Alcorn of Shakopee; one granddaughter, Emma Curren; two sisters, Judy (Steve) Kerkhoff, Susan (Ken) Hubbard; two brothers, Dr. Patrick (Brenda) Alcorn and Bob (Glenda) Alcorn; ten nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 26 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 559 20th Street SW, Rochester, MN 55902, with the Rev. Karen Pahl officiating.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 25 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th Street SE, Rochester, MN 55904.

Louis James “Lou” Hoppa

Louis James “Lou” Hoppa, age 81 passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at his home in Rochester. A Mass of Resurrection will be held for Mr. Hoppa at 10:00AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Thursday February 25th 2010, with Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Macken Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 92. Louis was born on the feast of St. Louis, August 25, 1928 to Louis and Cecilia (Pezalla) Hoppa in Breckenridge, MN. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and Breckenridge High School. He played on his high school’s first undefeated team and was the editor of the school newspaper. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged in 1948. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1952. During summers in the late 40′s and 50′s, he enjoyed playing amateur baseball: his favorite sport.

On February 11, 1953, he married Rosalyce “Kitty” Molacek at the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Callaway, MN. The couple met when Kitty was completing nursing school in Breckenridge.  Together, they had six children.

Mr. Hoppa worked in sales for five years before starting a 30-year career with IBM Rochester. He held several management and staff positions until his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, was a Master Gardener, and was a member of the American Legion Post 92. He grew wonderful garden vegetables, with tomatoes being his specialty. Over 30 years, he won many ribbons at the Olmsted County Fair. He shared his garden produce with several families. He was a volunteer at the Intercultural Mutual Assistance Program, helping to settle Cambodian refugees. He held leadership positions with the St. Pius Boy Scouts. He was awarded the St. George Medal, and the Bishop’s Medal. He was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. In 1990, he started the Heritage Garden and Orchard at the Olmsted County History Center, of which he was a lifetime member.

For many years, Lou and his family vacationed in Otter Tail County, eventually purchasing a cabin in 1977, where the family enjoyed many summers on West Leaf Lake.

Louis is survived by his wife, Rosalyce (of 57 years), his children, Catherine (Jon) Fraley of Evansville, IN. Mary Ellen (Michael) Coleman of Rochester, Jean (Craig) Sunderman of Cambridge, MN, Joseph (Deb) Hoppa of Wausau, WI. James (Linda) of Forest Lake, MN, Anthony (Lori Lynn) of Delano, MN. Ten grandchildren, Thomas Fraley, Brenna and Timothy Coleman, Sarah, Angela and Noah Hoppa, Emily and Anna Jean Sunderman, Aaron Hoppa, Ella Hoppa. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters. Memorials are preferred to Channel One Rochester, or Paws and Claws Humane Society.

Patricia Lorraine Hicks

Patricia Lorraine Hicks, 82, of Rochester MN, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20 at Augustana Health Center in Minneapolis.

She was born Patricia Slorby on Nov. 20, 1927 in Bismarck ND.   She graduated from Central High School in Rochester and attended Rochester Community College.  After marrying James George Hicks in Shawano WI Aug. 28, 1948, they raised 10 children, first near Green Bay WI, later moving to Rochester.   Pat’s greatest joys in life were her loving family and her church community.

She was preceded in death by her husband James; her mother and father, Calmer and Viva Allensworth Slorby; and by her youngest son Paul.

Pat leaves behind her daughters, Theresa Becker-Ersland of Austin MN,  and Paula Keller and Rose Kent of Minneapolis; sons Charles, Patrick and Phillip Hicks of Rochester; daughter and son-in-law Mary and John Alderman of Minneapolis; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Todd Helland of River Falls WI; son and daughter-in-law John and Kerry Hicks of Rochester; sisters Joanne Hicks of Rochester and Elvera Fressel of Fargo ND; and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.     She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church, the Third Order of St Francis and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 4:30-7 PM at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12 St. SE (507 282 1075) in Rochester.  A rosary will follow at 7 PM.   The funeral will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, Feb. 25 at St. Pius Catholic Church, 1315 12th Avenue Northwest, in Rochester, preceded by a viewing at 9:30.   She will be buried at a later date, next to her husband, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

J. Isabel Feliciano Hidalgo

J. Isabel Feliciano Hidalgo passed away on February 17, 2010 at St. Marys Hospital.  He was born on November 19, 1981 to Carlos Feliciano Reyes and Elia Hidalgo De Feliciano in Metzquititlan, HGO, Mexico.  He worked at Schoenfelder Farms. He is survived by his wife Yesenia Torentino Sevilla.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, February 22 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester at 11:00am.  Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will take place at a later date in Mexico.

Bernard William Erdman

The funeral mass for Bernard W. (Barney) Erdman will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 20th at Macken Funeral Home, Rochester, Minnesota with the Rev. Donald Schmitz of Holy Spirit Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery Tuesday, February 23 with military honors.

Barney died peacefully Wednesday, February 17 at his Rochester home surrounded by his loving wife of 64 years, Madlyn, his six children, their spouses, a number of his 18 grandchildren and caregiver, Ok Ki.

Born March 12, 1917 to Paul Erdman and Olive Stillwell in Wesley, Iowa, Barney received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa and obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. Barney married Madlyn O’Connor on the Fort Jackson army military base in Columbia, South Carolina on November 20, 1945. He served in the European theater in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sargent.

Barney’s first career was as a teacher, coach and principal.  However, being a natural salesman, he chose to change careers and go to work for Pratt Audio Visual Incorporated and Eby’s Sporting Goods, both in Cedar Rapids, where he sold audio visual and athletic equipment to schools, colleges and universities.  Barney was employed by Pratt’s for over fifty years. During most of that time he was their top salesman.  Many of his customers became close friends. He retired at age 86.

Barney was a member of St. Mathew’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids for over fifty years.  In addition to being an avid Hawkeye fan, he was a long time member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association.  He loved to fish with his friends and sons and to dance with his wife and daughters.

Barney’s life revolved around his family and their well-being.  He was a beloved husband and a cherished father and grandfather.  He was known and loved by all for his quick humor, generosity of spirit, loyal friendship and unwavering optimism. He will be dearly missed.

Barney is survived by his wife Madlyn, Rochester; sons, Michael (Sheila) Erdman, of Cedar Rapids, IA; Kevin (Nancy) Erdman, of Minnetrista, MN; daughters, Molly Martin of Naperville, IL; Prudence O’Connor of Eden Prairie, MN; Ellen (John) Huston, Rochester, MN; Elizabeth Friedenfeld (Doug Hoskins) of Plymouth, MN; 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brothers, Lowell and Darrell and sisters, Madeline and Carrell.   He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marguerite and Donnelle.

Robert F. Clark

Robert F. Clark age 83, of Rochester, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital.  Robert was born on September 10, 1926 in Rochester. He attended Rochester High School and afterward enlisted in the US Army. He married Donna M. Lehnherr on January 20, 1951 in Rochester. He worked as a local truck driver in the Rochester area. Survivors include his children: Colleen Clark, and her husband John of Indianapolis, Steven Clark of Billings, Montana, and Matt Clark and his wife Sandy of Rochester, a sister: Elaine (Mike) Spading of Rochester. He is preceded in death by his wife Donna, four brothers, and a sister. Robert was an active member of the Rochester Eagles Club and the American Legion Post 92. He enjoyed traveling, working with stained glass, gardening, Twins Baseball, and especially the many hours he spent with his grandchildren: Katie and Anna Clark.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Nelson Officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Macken Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 92. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Cancer Society.

Robert William Oelslager

Robert William “Doc” Oelslager passed away Sunday at his home surrounded by family.  He was born July 1st. 1924, in Fergus Falls Mn.  After Graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1942, he went to work for the FBI in Washington D.C.

On March 21, 1944 He was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and received training at Camp Hood, Texas, Camp McCall, North Carolina, and Fort Benning, Georgia.  His Overseas duty was spent in the Philippine Islands, and Hokkaido and Tokyo, Japan.

After his discharge from Service, he entered the Northwestern Chiropractic College in Minneapolis, MN.  and graduated in 1950.  He practiced in St. Cloud, Minnesota for 3 years before moving to Rochester, Minnesota where he spent 51 years as a Chiropractor, retiring January 1, 2002.

He was an avid Scouter for 55 years.

He leaves behind a loving family and many admiring friends.

A memorial service will be at 7:00pm Thursday February 18, 2010 at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester.  Friends may call from 4:00pm until the time of the service on Thursday.  Burial will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
